Andrew Dodd owns one. He brought it down to last years German Autofest in canberra. Cool looking little truck. His is a single cab still with the original sign writing on the wood tray

I can remember seeing them while walking to school..
they looked very strange....
a truck that looked very similar was a COMMER....

the engine is in the cab with the driver...
very warm in the winter.... lol
would be a problem with OH&S these days... lol

Tempo had no association with VW....
they just used their engines....

[Never seen a dual cab model...] probably not in Australia

saw Single cab at either Nationals or Valla a few years ago....

as You can see Very Rare...

Very low numbers - a long Time ago.... early 50's....

Hi

The 2010 German Autofest will have the rare German cars again, they only come every second year, these cars alone are worth the trip to Canberra.

68AutoBug - October 13th, 2009 at 07:17 PM

HI

I read where 1362 were made from 1949 to 1952 in Hamburg Germany. VW supplied the engines until they found that the tempos were selling up against the New VW type 2 vehicles so they stopped supplying the VW engines..

I have never seen or heard of one of these Austin engined vehicles being in Australia...

They must have shipped a few boatloads of the Temp Matador to Australia in the early 50s as they were very common...

they then used an english Austin Healey 1600 engine..
and the Tempos started to look a bit like a kombi van..

they sold well in the UK and Europe...

I believe the patents to some models were sold to a company in India which made them thru the 60s++
I haven't been able to find any photos or info in English of these..

Thanks for the pics guys and the history! I rekon they are mad...

So practical.
Hauling a celica as a ute gets a little old, and what better improvement than a flat bed truck haha. :tu:

68AutoBug - October 13th, 2009 at 07:32 PM

pete wood - October 13th, 2009 at 10:07 PM

"COOL", umm don't see it sorry.

top heavy and eccentric, I can see that. The body shape makes you realise just how good Kombis were for their time.

Dirtbag - October 14th, 2009 at 12:57 PM

Come on Pete, they're so friggin ugly and dumb looking that I want one. That makes them cool. Freaky styling and suicide doors. Put me down for 2 : )

Hi
My figure comes from a German Language Tempo club in Germany..
I'm NOT quite sure what that number means as they continued to be made for well 0ver 20 years in one form or another...

There were produced in RHD & LHD but maybe that low number was with VW engines????

There were a big seller so I'm led to believe they would have been made in much larger numbers than suggested...

I saw it ,yes it was cheap and came home with me!!!! It was in Two Wells, That Volks Enthusiasts show photo was from 2001. After having owned it for a short time and selling it to AE shortly before the show(thats me with my back toward the camera), I wouldn't own another one. Still had the original 25 horse in it too, woeful to drive, slow, full crash box and 6V. I still have the battery strap and two of the idiot light bulb holders from the dash cluster of that car! They have the novelty factor about them, but that very quickly wears off when your ears are ringing from 30 minutes of engine noise in the cab under the wooden cowl behind you.
