this is good, a screw held a jacking point in place so its been drilled out & welded it up the way it should be (drilled out screw in circle)

yea i been in the same predicament. Its a terrible feeling. Was a while back now... Again, car long distance, got photos and details, sent money, car delivered and eek!

But i bet this guy paid more for his than i did for mine, being a split. he has my sympathy.

Just for the record, the moron responsible for this excuse for workmanship is the artist known on a number of Australian VW forums as " pm for name.

As Wally mentioned already, this guy is a repeat offender.

I suspect this post will be removed in a pretty short space of time, and I might even get in a bit of shit from the mods, or get banned... but hey... if it stops somebody from being killed by a supposedly "restored" car that is about as safe as a rusty guillotine in a cell at the nuthouse, then it'll be worth the banning...

Unfortunately, with the big money that split Kombis bring nowadays, the cowboys are attracted and come out of the woodwork.

The same thing happened many years ago with the 'chop top' craze. A few well-made conversions were quickly followed by hundreds of cheap backyard jobs that ruined many Beetles. Eventually the craze died out and they moved on to something else (ricers I hope). Now it looks like they're back with VWs - watch out.

yep we bought a karmann ghia off him a few years ago, he said it was in good condition bugger all rust etc, and he lied about all the questions we asked him on the phone.
it arrived with a fiber glass pan and more bog than steel, sills full of newspaper etc, we had to do a lot of welding just to be able to sell it at a loss.

welding looks like a 1/2 blind 1st year apprentice with a mig & stick welder with drunken shakes from a big weekend on the piss, some people have no morals

He's not just buying and selling kombis - there is a beetle for sale on here too. Follow the 'signs' and you will work out which one. Haven't had a good look at it and it may be good - but if you are buying it better have a really good look based on history.
Another split ute went to a user called 'animal' who also was very unhappy with the description and the difference with the condition when it arrived. How many is that 4?

god forbid, after the checkerplate was removed a few weeks ago & all the welds or socalled welds were spotted
inspected the welds of the front sill,the doglegs & the floor from under, he then proceeded to sandblast the seams hidden with paint & bog to easily show whats there

it sold & told as a fully restored singlecab on ebay.

It just shows how screwed up this world has become. You cant even put a photo on a website with the repairers name. Surely thats not slander or libel. Its a fact. ( this is not a criticism of the moderators, just the rules that have evolved)
Some of those welding repairs would result in prosecution if the owners lodged a formal complaint.

From what I am told, you only need a traders license if you sell more than 6 vehicles per year

I've seen this sort of crap workmanship on professional repairs and restorations for years. It happens all over the globe. Unfortunately poor panel work is very easy to hide. It makes those that do a good job that much more worthy of the money they earn.

I am a little confused did steve do the blasting on the bodge one then. I can't understand that you would blast it all and then not be able to weld it properly if you have a welder in your hand and clean metal. Also the picture with the screw circled you should probably point out that that is steves good weld. am I right. I.e is even and has good penetration

Although it would be nice to name and shame, the reality of Australian defamation law is that is a very slow way to throw away $100k or more in legal fees and more in damages.

Truth is a partial defense, but ... it's going to cost YOU $$$$$$ to prove it. And if you don't prove it, it's fairly obvious from the above posts that you intended and knew that this set of posts would harm the other person. That's the entire point of writing this sort of thread.

If we had a way of rating members, that is not defamatory as eBay has gotten away with it for years, but we don't, so we can't slag off anyone, members or not.

It'll end in tears. If names or more hints come out, this thread and any like it will have to go.

Not wanting to stir the pot, but surely this sort of vehicle, even in the state it is in, would command a reasonable high price. Who spends that sort of cash without inspecting it, or at least having someone you trust inspect it. I dont think that the whole responsibility lies on the seller. If this man restores these vehicles for a living, and he hasn't fully done his homework when making a purchase, he only has himself to blame! Perhaps even requesting numerous detailed photos would have been a good idea....did he do this before purchasing??

As the title of this thread says "buyer beware".....it does seem strange that the actual owner of this vehicle hasnt said a thing about it on here....maybe the deal he got wasn't that bad afterall.....
