FS NSW, 1979 Golf Diesel
beetleboyjeff - March 25th, 2013 at 09:57 PM

For Sale: 1979 Mk 1 Golf Diesel $1800.00

Owners - Col & Maureen Mavin - 02 65 811296 - shakeymavin@hotmail.com , Port Macquarie, NSW 2444.
I think they have owned this Golf since new - Col is a VW man. Unfortunately, he was badly injured in a head on in his T3 a few years ago, but was hoping to be able to recover & drive his Golf. It has been kept registered & looked after (under cover) ready for that, but it looks like that won't happen.

At the moment, Maureen isn't on here, so you will have to ring or email, but I will send her the link and she may join to make this easier.

Engine re-built about 25,000km ago (I was told the total odo. but I can't remember exactly - it was 400,000 and something).
Gearbox has been replaced by a 5 speed manual.
I am not a Golf expert, but the only rust I could find was a bubble under the trim on the rear quarter.
Some of the door handles & window winders don't work - not sure if they need lubrication, adjusting, or replacing.
The dash is cracked, but has a dash mat on it. The rest of the interior is reasonable.
There is a 2nd spare wheel & tire.

Jeff,

I will definately be giving Maureen a ring. Will try and have a look over Easter if it doesn't inconvenience her.

Regards,

Matt.

good work matt, If I had the cahs & the room I would have stashed that away myself.

beetleboyjeff - March 27th, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Matt, Maureen rang me after you bought it - she parked it on Clifton Dr. today, and between AVD and the exposure there, she had 4 people interested in it - she couldn't believe it.

She was very thankful that it was going to a VW person though. :-)

Matt is pretty damn happy with it - and you would have had to have been quick to get it - you only had a bit over a day, and would have had to fight 3 other people besides Matt.

It is a pretty good car though. :-)

yeh I can imagine , they becoming very rare to find ...its funny thiugh there are an abundance of mk1s in South Africa, they stopped manufacturing the mk1 shape only in 2009... so you can just imagine how mint some of them are!

Matt Ryan - June 10th, 2013 at 11:48 PM

Yes, the latest South African VW Citi would be great to own, 1973 Mk 1 body with 2009 engine, trans and interior.

I doubt if they would comply with our ADR's though.

Keep hunting, I've seen another one here on AVD and a couple on Gumtree and Ebay.

Regards,

Matt.

should be very economical with a five speed
any idea Jeff?

beetleboyjeff - June 12th, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Matt was saying it was very good on fuel at the swap meet the other day. He may come back on here and elaborate.

Bernie,

I hit the trip meter last week when I filled up. I'll go tomorrow and fill up again. Unfortunately most of my running around is short trips with a cold or barely warm engine (so, not much 5th gear).

It gives the Beetle a break from a fate worse than death. I save all the decent trips for it now, the water cooled can put up with the crap easier.

Regards,

Matt.

Sorry for not getting back with fuel consumption. While I was filling up last week a guy driving a comercial garbage truck decided to drive through the forecourt with his lifting forks raised. Scared the crap out of the customers. We all thought the roof was going to come down on us. Lucky it was steel on aluminium, so no sparks.

Anyway in the middle of it all I forgot to record my trip meter and fuel amounts. I did remember this week:

241Km
15 litres

That's 6.22 Litres /100Km according to an online calculator. The factory spec for around town use with a 4 speed is 6.5 litres/100Km.

Regards,

Matt.

Sadly Matt passed away couple of months ago & as a result his son Garry is now selling this Golf.

You can contact Garry if you are on facebook by going here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/714103505287478/

Which is VW Buy/Swap or Sell - Australia in case the link doesn't work.

If your not on facebook I can probably get Garry's contact details for you.

Car is located in Port Macquarie.

Cheers
Brendan

I wondered what would happen to the Golf. It is a good car.

Special Air Service - September 3rd, 2014 at 10:31 PM

If I had the money, time & space I would buy it, but have neither at the moment.

Sad news re Matt
we sometimes get so busy and don't realise a good AVD member has left us ...
Condolences to the family and hope the GLDie goes to an appreciative buyer.

I need to sell my L-bug first or a Merc lol....
peace to all
