The fuel gauge in my square doesn't work, after some checking by the local auto-elec the gauge works but the sender does not.
it is part # 311919051, and has 21/89 above that. Date stamped 4/72 so the original item.
Are these repairable? If so who? I assume that it is different to the beetle as it has the 311 number, probably a different depth tank I guess.
It is the solid tube type, rather than a float on an arm.

if you look at the bottom there is a nut with a locking tab over it, move the tab away from the nut undo the nut and remove the insides, then clean
the slide and the Float. See how that goes I have got a few to work doing that.
If that does not work I think I may have one here you can have.

Thanks for that, will try tomorrow when I've got a bit of time. This car wasn't driven for 5 or so years, and I actually ended up removing the
whole tank and cleaning out the inside as it had so much c**p in it, so it makes sense the sender might be jammed up a bit as well.
See how I go, otherwise I 'll get back to you about your sender.

Angus, I had the same problem a while back.. Did the same as midlife described and is solved the problem.
Are you still after the aircleaner/carb elbow? as I just converted my Notch from Swing/single carb 1500 to IRS/dual carb 1600 and have a NOS elbow
that has only been on the car for 4 months.
to check if the gauge is working take the wire that goes to the sender unit and ground it with the ignition on the gauge should go to the full
position which means the gauge works
to test he sender unit remove from teh tank and hook up a multi meter in the resistance position one wire to the terminal and the otehr earth to
the body of the sender unit inver the gsender and the resistance should go up on the multi meter
I've pulled the sender and it had a bit of junk in it but the float moved freely. The problem was a fine wire broken connecting the float to the
sender base. I don't know if that is something instrument guys like Lionel Otto could fix? I've just put it back in at the moment as something has
to fill up the hole in the tank!
Dave- the auto-elec guy had me check the gauge while he tested it and it went to full position so presumably he did exactly as you detailed.
Brent - the bit I was chasing was not the elbow (that is downstream of the air cleaner), it was the control box upstream of the air filter - it and a
rubber bellows is the connection between the air cleaner and the body. i didn't have any luck here so just yesterday I have ordered one from ISP
West in the US along with the pop-out window rubbers to fit your windows.
Marc, have you got a spare sender? I'll probably ring Otto's on Monday to see if they can fix it but I'll need to plug the hole while its away and
they may not be able to fix it at all.

the numbers are 21/89---- 311919051 10/72.
This has been sitting for about 4 years so I would pull it apart and clean everything.
