Dasdubber - January 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 AM

Nice one Nick - I know what it is like restoring a car on a student's budget - (sorry to hijack your thread) but here is a pic of my old 63 which I did throughout my first uni degree. Like you say...one step at a time!

looks like a good starting point, like the choice of wheels for it....should be good once all done if your old car was anything to go by!

66deluxe - January 22nd, 2007 at 03:19 PM

Nice one bond and what will the donk be?

Dasdubber - January 22nd, 2007 at 03:25 PM

We need more pics Nick! :D

bond - January 22nd, 2007 at 06:51 PM

thanks michael - will be interesting, being a different kettle of fish starting from a little closer to scratch than the 73.

damo mate - initially thought type 4 ie: that 914 donk fs. and build it up. still sitting on that thought. then there is the 2430 stroker type 1 i may have mentioned to you once before. i think either way it will be n/a. although i was somewhat inspired by that manx with the 2332 and cb hideaway turbo kit. in no hurry. need to research, talk, learn a little more and then ill start throwing $ around and not just dreams :) - what are your thoughts mate?

alan! i will supply more pics as requested hehe. i love the '76' bug you did... brings a tear to the eye to see it now... very sad

thanks nick

Bondy, i say build a type 4 for it, although i did just get a 78.4mm CB stroker crank for another engine to build in the future, but mate it's up to you i'll be waiting on your decision. Ta Damo.

bond - January 28th, 2007 at 06:36 PM

spent the weekend removing the body from the pan. a learning experience in itself. not that it was a lot of work. still managed to keep me busy for the better half of saturday sunday with the purchase of a tradeair compressor from bunnings which turned out to be good for 15minutes before melting the motor windings. the gmc that replaced it looks like its cut for the job :)

some pics of where im at.

bond - February 17th, 2007 at 04:39 PM

sat 17/2/07 - stripping the pan prior to sending for sandblasating and powdercoating hopefully this week if funds prevail.

you can see the amount of crud that comes off after 50years and the debri left after the previous owner had the body sanblasted whilst on the pan......

Hey Nick, if you want to get your bug body off the crates etc, you could borrow my body trolley - I don't think I'll be needing it for quite some time. It has wheels so you can move it around (one person job) which is a bonus.

You'd have to borrow a ute or trailer to pick it up from the gold coast though as I don't have a vehicle that can transport it to brissy.

Let me know either way, if not no dramas - it will just stay beside my house :)
cheers
Alan

Not much progress mate - just trying to save some cash to buy all the bits!

bond - March 22nd, 2007 at 08:50 PM

hey guys!

well - pan was sandblasted and powdercoated!... then.......

decided to convert to irs as brad @ custom up here in brisbane mentioned it may have been one thing you (alan) wish you had done with the ragtop?.

so - have sent the pan down to custom offroad where they are doing the irs conversion. aswell as this will have the innside lip of the frame horns shaved and the tubes welded into the bulk of the horns - giving the option to go either beetle or kombi box.

the beam has had the 2" narrow with weld in adjusters. done also by custom.

i have sourced early type 3 rear drums in fantastic condition thanks to don damo!

and am awaiting on the new disk kit from vvds thanks to boris.

oh - and hopefully if he reads this - a big thanks to terry (subibaja) who is an absolute champion helping transport the bare pan around the country for me!

will take some progress pics asap and get them posted!

alan - you have u2u

nick

Dasdubber - March 22nd, 2007 at 09:04 PM

Progress sounds good Nick - yeah I did wish I IRSed the ragtop. Depends on what you want to do with it I guess.....with the oval I intend to stay swingaxle because it will be more a strip car than one set up for corners.

Look forward to seeing the pics.

bond - April 3rd, 2007 at 06:46 PM

well - the s/a pan has been converted to irs. have had a kombi box kit installed also as ive decided to run a 091 for longevity and given the motor that will hopefully one day sit in the back i'll more than likely be thankful ive gone this way down the track... some pics of where we're at. (apologise as i had the hicups whilst taking some of these photos hehe)

$%^& yeah. Nice one Nick.

Dasdubber - June 22nd, 2007 at 02:46 PM

Was wondering how long it would take to see a set of these on an oz car (apart from the single cab imported from the US a little while back). Good stuff!

dvs_vw - June 22nd, 2007 at 04:55 PM

there are a few sets on cars down south, and these are hardly on a car, more like a pan.....:dork:  :P ;) ;)....yes I'm jealous :starhit:

Looking good dude, get some more progress shots up as it comes along....looking forward to seeing it come together, should be one very nice bug once all done! :thumb

avd bike day. not a bad idea. ive parted with the cbr600rr. am now on a k6 gsxr1000. lovely bike.

looks like i'll end up keeping the body. in the spirit of making sure its done right, the body, gaurds etc etc will be sandblasted and etch primed within the next week or so.

this time, im thinking.. black :)

will update again over the weekend!
