cool as Q: how much fun could be had in that buggy? A: bloody heaps i reckon:tu:

DannyW - April 24th, 2008 at 08:03 PM

haha yea would like a good VW engine, nice and simple but 40kw doesnt cut it.

any ideas on how to get more power out of the damn things ? I'm a V8 man not a 4 cylinder bloke so require some teaching ;)

Its great fun till you get to the boggy sand that it slows to walking pace pretty much.

Na Geraldton WA is where I'm at, plenty of dunes here and a BIG buggy run

simplest/cheapest way to get more power would be a turbo setup. SU drawthrough setup.

Otherwise go the CA motor, but be prepared to convert to IRS and put a Kombi box in it if you want to do that.

it already is IRS with a kombi box.

What tyrre pressures are you running as these are a light weight car and not a heavy FWD so you should only be running 4 - 6 PSI in the rears only.
That exhaust looks the goods but thats about it as it will not give you any back pressure for the small motor which will result in poor low down performance especially with the stinger on.

Ok you win fellas, I've decided to stay aircooled and build a 2300cc motor :D just ordered a new block off VWparts in the states and will order the stroker kit next :D

anyone have much todo with the 86mm stroker cranks and the chevy rods ? as I may even go bigger

TheMiniMan - May 22nd, 2008 at 08:23 AM

I have quite a few 4.4litre Leyland p76 Alloy V8 engines here if you`re keen,,, 12 of them actually :-)

haha why so many ?

if the buggy wasn't so small I would be as its hard to steer as it is, maybe for another project down the track

Danny we used to be the biggest Leyland spare parts distributor & the largest mini spares & repairs specialist in the country for many many years & when the Leyland P76 came out, well,,, we grabbed a heap of brand new 4.4 litre alloy engines & of course the marque died a horrible death quite quickly so we ended up buying up a whole heap of 2nd hand complete cars as well,

i decided to run one up the bum of my 62 model splitty single cab kombi ute (it was good for carrying the minis around in the back off & also sooper dooper good as a beach buggy too)

i set up another V8 with a T4 turbo & shoved it into the front of one of my minis, sitting east-west & still front wheel drive

I also did quite a few deals with New Zealand selling them for their Shot-over Jet boats etc

so i still have quite a few left

You could shove one in "Mid-Mounted", that will help the buggy steer & turn a whole heap better & also there won`t be many people beating you up hills or in boggy sand ever again :-)

I have a lexus quad cam 32v injected alloy V8 in my duel cab kombi now so i really don`t need so many p76 engines anymore

DannyW - May 22nd, 2008 at 02:12 PM

yea the lexus quads are nice bits of gear.

I will keep an eye out for another chassis to build a v8 one, my friend has an old sprintcar frame still so ya never know.... could be a front engine IRS IFS buggy ;)
