Hi all.
I've just taken ownership of a '65 1500s notch and I can't wait to start work on it.

This will be a big learning curve for me as I've never had a project car before (have had motorbike projects in the past though). So far the beast looks pretty good. The panels and floor pan are free from rust and bog so far which i'm really happy about. Theres bit of an issue with the rear wheel arch or two though, hopefully no real horrible surprises pop up.

It's been adopted from VIC, so first step is to get it registered in NSW. For now, I just want to get it running, steering and stopping properly. Hope to get it on the road as soon as possible. Will worry about aesthetics after.

I'll post some pics and update with progress as it happens. I think I'm going to be asking a hell of a lot of questions so brace yourself! (yes i'll search first).

Good eye Yes it's mine. She's sold though and being collected on Wednesday night. I'm happy the two notches got to meet though for a couple of days. I'll be really sad to see mine go.

Ok, first mistake. Be delicate with old VW keys.
I turned one in the ignition barrel just a tad too hard and bent the bloody thing. I'm now too scared to try and use it again, who knows how many times it's been bent back and forth. It's about as soft as butter.
I've been trying to search around for a guide on buying new keys but I'm a little lost.

I have two separate keys, shown below.
(one says "A411" on it, and the other says "SG 45"




They're both different shapes. I figured one could be for the door and the other for ignition? But now I've almost snapped one in half I'm not game enough to try any more.
I took the ignition barrel out to have a look for a code. Is this what I should be looking for?


Am I right in saying that I need an SG blank? I got thrown off because I saw a picture of an SG blank online and it looked different to my key (that displays SG code on it).

Is this all bit of a muchness? I've been able to start a VW with a 5 cent piece before, maybe I should just carry one of those on my keyring instead.

Any help would be appreciated!

Some key cutters still carry blanks for VWs. I've gotten ignition barrel keys cut in the past - just pull the barrel and take it to a locksmith. I took it in, they guy picked it as a bug straight away, half hour later I had my key and it all worked fine.

If you want an original key, ebay has a few blanks the same as yours online most of the time.

no biggy man... just put two people in touch with each other - thats all..

just keep us in the loop and get this thing back on the road...

I'm sure your car is Aussie built. someone has addad the mustache from a german 1500S to the bonnet and the S badge on the number plate light I'm not sure if that was an Aussie option.

The car looks good and you will get to see the differance between how a 65 and a 73 drives.

It's a good feeling that's finally done.

This morning with the help of Pollywaffle shadowing me, I took the beast on it's maiden voyage, a one hour trip across Sydney from the mechanics (RAW) to my house with no numberplates and luckily no "extra" attention besides the occasional wave and thumbs up.

We've now converted the car to 12v which went very smooth besides a false start with a cracked fan shroud. Everything else on the car is as it came when I purchased it, besides the new relocated fuel filter and two new front tyres. It now sits about 3 splines down at the back and 2 at the front. Will let it settle and see how it goes before adjusting the height again (will look at the front again soon). Currently it's still within the legal lowered limit, doesn't rub when turning or scrape on my driveway (the acid test) and looks pretty bloody decent I think.

I'll be putting the plates on during the week. Went to the RTA to sort out the rego, but their antiquated system means they need to send and receive back a fax from VicRoads confirming the car is in their system before they hand everything over to me. I don't know why they cant just pick up the phone and check in 2 minutes...

Anyway, I'm very happy with the car at the moment. It's my first project car and the whole blue slipping etc were all new to me, so I'm happy things have all gone very smoothly with the help from Adam at RAW.
It drove really well on the way home, I can't wait to take it out for a mini road trip next weekend.

My current exhaust is rat shit so I've been looking out for one that "tucks up" to give optimal ground clearance. After some searching I settled on this one I got from Boris at Vintage. It was cheaper than the one at Classic, and U.S made so I couldn't pass it up.
Hopefully this one works well. Will find out soon enough.



Also picked up a second hand venetian off the forums I'll be putting on soon.

maybe behind the spare...
and a Berger or BALM paints sticker...

I don't know if you have sorted out the key thing yet, but there is a really good guy on the samba called 'gabvwkey' who can key locks alike ect... he has a stack of OG NOS key blanks the right kind! My dad just got his 21 window done and I just sent him my oval locks and ignition, he is also going to send us some blanks for our notchy. So if needed look for him, I'll try find you a link.

I went to my local locksmith and got a key cut which was pretty convenient. It's not as good looking as the original, but it'll do for now.
Yeah I always check out the samba. Got some ngreat stuff that pops up from time to time.

I'm having a slight issue with my numberplate. It sits too low and is partially hidden by the bumper bars (front and back).
I kind of want to avoid drilling into the number plates, so have to look at doing something with the brackets I guess. They just seem to sit about 3 inches too low.
Has anyone seem some mounting bracket attachements that hold the plate up higher?
