DUAL CAB RECOVERY (CUSTOM)


I have the job of fixing up this dual cab, unfortunately most of the back is rusted out and all internal floors and sills are gone or stuffed, so I'm going to change a few things, ideas and assistance along the way would be greatly appreciated. I know this would generally be in tech section but some of you with the best ideas may not go there. As it sits-

Today I got stuck into it, removed and cleaned up all rear sections, rebuilt back wall and lowered beams for a tray to sit as close to engine and wheel tops as possible.

Brendan.. From memory, this is a 71 or 72 with a new front grafted.. I spent some time today looking at the setup for my project DC.. This includes relocating the fuel tank further back to accomodate more stowage on the lower floor.. Possible add on will be a side treasure chest (like the SC).. I am not convinced (as yet) that the EJ2.2 is the "only" way to go.. I had a look at a Holden v6 3.8 today and it is very well done.. Also just about convinced to adapt an inspection hatch on the rear of the tray.. The possibilities are all out there mate..

Look forward to swapping notes and seeing how you go..

wow, not much of the rear left. looking forward seeing what you do. I reckon you should go the V6 too. Go heaps better with one than with a subie I think.

yeh gotta admit i reckon in a kombi I would go a ecotek or the new model v6. Or injected V8 if it is legal. There is no substitute for cubes and torque in a heavy car.

Don't get me wrong.. from what I have learned and read about re-engined type 2's.. The EJ2.2 appears to be the front runner.. Smooth power delivery, good useable power range, etc etc.. Also the setup by Custom Offroad is definately the best I have looked at (only in pictures so far) for a type 2 dual cab.. The dual cab gives more options as there is more room under the upper floor so, with that in mind I am still studying other power plants..

As this is my 1st re-engine project and reliability, parts availability over long miles in remote locations is as important as power performance.. For this reason, GMH is worth considering..

Sorry Brendan, didn't mean to hijack your thread.. Sort of related though..

Hey all.
I have seen the custo offroad conversion in the flesh,and how it performs.
Brad called in on his little trip to Vic and i have to say, the hole job was realy well done.
you couldn't pick that there was a subi engine in there.
And although it wasn't a speed demon, it got up to speed pritty quicklywith a fast approching traffic when he left.

I have to hand it to them, this is a realy great conversion.
well worth a look at.

Would look a lot better if the floor sheets rib where the join is are the same. Some big fella over the shoulder reckons they should run the oter way, Easier to sweep all the s**t out.

come on Terry. Don't be silly. yes I did do my own conversion but what's that got to do with it? It's 2.2l versus 3.8l or 5l. No contest. Even if the big ones don't rev, they win on torque and besides, the V6 comes with a factory blower...mmm...blower (drooling on keyboard)...mmm....:cool:

It's a '69 by the way.
so are you goung for the cab chassis look?
one thing I thought about doing to it was kinda like a stepside.
the other thing I wanted to do was crew doors on both sides.
and a big rag top sunroof.

yeah, i really like the idea of the corners your doing, should be intreesting to see how the low tray looks, i actually recon teh std tray looks a bit awqward and low without the sidegates on, but looks like going lower may look cool also
