info on dizzy/points
Hi,
Have just bought a 67 beetle, and I'd like some info on the ignition with the intention of going to electronic triggering.
My dizzy number is Bosch 0231 137 009. I am pretty sure this is not the "009" that is commonly mentioned as it has a vac advance and is apparently
stock according to http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm
The points are bosch 01 009. I was wondering if anyone has used a pertonix unit in this stock dizzy, or know if its available in oz?
Thanks
Ed

G'day Ed,
I've used Pertronix electronic ignition in my bus dizzy that was a vacuum advance, not 009. It's probably a bit different to your dizzy but
similiar, go figure? Anyways you should be able to get a unit for it. They are fantastic I reckon, no more maintenance with points and timing and they
make starting a breeze. I don't how much they are here but I got mine in from the U.S (got relatives there) and could get one in for you if you want.
Another good cheap upgrade to go with it is a high voltage coil.
Cheers,
Dustin

Yeah gidday ED,
I had a vacuum advance dizzy on my van. I also wanted to switch to electronic ignition and do away with the points. I bought a package deal from http://classicveedub.com.au/ClassicVeeDub.asp for $200 that
consisted of a 009 dizzy and empi electronic ignition. You can also buy these separately off their website. I just put a screw in the vacuum line off
the carbie to block it off as you do not require it with the electronic unit. Less to go wrong I recon.
Cheers.
Karl.

Thanks for the info guys,
Dusto- what year bus was it? app 64-67 used same ign parts as my beetle. 68> were different.
Karl - how did the van go with the 009 compared to stock dizzy? (apart from the joy of no points!)
I've checked the parts stores (online anyway) and the electronic ignition kits are available either for the 009 or stock 68 onwards dizz. May go down
the 009 path if there are no other options. Wife drives, but can't set the points.
I'd like to keep the stocker 'cause it works!
Thanks
Ed

It's a later bus ('77), but just trying to point out that I think they do make a variation of the elec modules designed for the vacuum advance.
I'd try and stick with the vacuum too, I have it with the vacuum and elec ignition and it's great. I've heard a mixed bag about the 009...
If you call a place they should be able to tell you if you can get the module for your dizzy.
Cheers,
Dustin

i have a 1600 t1 motor with std carb and have a 009 with an accufire (from classic vdub for $65).
the elect points were worth it alone for getting rid of points gapping.
although i have no probs with this setp, after looking through other threads (009 poo formance), i might look out for other dizzies and see what they
do.
also, volkspower sell std 009's as well 009's that they have "recurved" what's this all about and has anyone got one that they can give us the
skinny on.

Yeah seems to be going alright. But hard to tell because I changed to the electronic ignition at the same time I changed the dizzy. I might put the
points and vacuum advance back on to see what noticable difference there is.
Cheers.

In any comparison of new 009 and an old stock distributor you need to consider that the stock distributor has 25+ years of wear and built up dirt and
grime whereas the 009 has brand new internals. If you've got the cash, get a new vacuum advance distributor with your electronic ignition (keep the
old one as a spare). If not, pull apart your existing distributor and clean the shit out and regrease the moving bits.
While you're at it what condition are the rest of the ignition components and the fuel hoses?

Yeh,good point. I got my vacuum advance completley rebuilt along with the electronic igntion and it is tops! Although getting it rebuilt actually cost
a bit and I probably could have picked up a 009 cheaper, it's just I've heard criticism about 009 flat spots. Haven't had one so can't say, but
could be annoying...
Cheers,
Dustin

Fair call on the new vs worn comparison. When we brought it home and i got to give it a bit of a run, it felt powerless as revs reached 2500-3000
(guessing) . I am new to vw and my workshop manuals haven't arrived yet. The plugs were dry sooty. Points were clean (as was the dizzy in general and
greased nicely) but were set to about .008ish. Resetting these to dwell 45 made a great difference and a real nice rev range. So I think the ign
system is fine. All hoses are newish looking and tight. Basically it goes just fine, but its my wifes car and I don't want her stranded because of
points/condensor problems (or teach her how to do steps 1 to 20 :duh )
When the books finally land in my lap, I will do a thorough tune up, I was just wondering if anyone has used a pertonix unit in this stock dizzy (mid
60's), or know if its available in oz? The online suppliers (from what I could see) have units to suit the 009types or the 68 and up vac dizzys.
If they don't have it, it would be a great excuse to get the new vac advance dis ! and a new coil !
Karl - what are you gonna do if the old dis and points are noticably better?

Put them back in with a fresh set of points and cry about the $150 I just spent on the 009.
