after market seats


Whats involved in putting some aftermarket seats in a bay kombi? Any particular seats which will fit? whats the go with rego etc?

any help would be great... nothing too specific in the searches i have done.

make sure the seats are adr approved velo seats are but have fixed back or look at jap import seats.

they will require an engineers if they dont mount on the stock mounts.

so if i get a set of kombi seat, chop the rails off and some how fix them to another seat i wont need engineers cert? Is this what most people do? Which model seat is easiest?

as far as i know yes u will still need an engineers cert as u are modifying the mount by putting it on the new seat.

yeah what Anthiron said is true in nsw and as for seats i recommend going to a jap wreckers and actually sitting in and measuring the seats so you can find the ones you like best for your body

I am pickng up some bucket seats from Just Jap at Kirawee, very cheap compared to some other places. there phone num 02 95450532. My plans are to pull my stock rails off my seats and weld them onto the new ones..as for engineers certs we'll see what happens. Also if you just give them a ring and have a chat they can pretty much tell you all the rules and regs

I am getting a pair of new sparco seats i think they were because they provide good support both waist and sholders so i dont get thrown around in my seat which take a 4point harness. It is costing me $400 for the pair (much better then the >$400each seat which i was being quoted when i was shopping around). You can get any seat you want as long as it fits which shouldnt be a problem with your kombi, and just take off your old rails and remount/weld them onto your new seats so that way your still on the original vw tracking. I did the same with my beetle, i put nissan 180sx seats in there. although its not as easy as it sounds, some seats need more mods then other, make sure you find yourself a good welder and get some scrap metal to make up some brackets if need be.

i am picking up my seats today so i can post a pic tomorrow of them.

As for how legal all this is... i couldnt help you there

nice! I was going to try and find some seats with an arm rest on the inside... would be very cool seeming as in a bus you got nowhere to rest your left arm (or right for passenger)...

PS: The issue with you rails it usually that if you have to modify the rails (ie welding or cutting) an engineer needs to be involved. If the seat bolts to the original rails and is a straight bolt in entity then usually you will not require an engineer. Advise would be, talk to an engineer in your state, they will have the correct answer for the questions you have. the other thing is that most states have a vehicle modification standard on their website. check them out..

yea, is it expensive to get engineer cert? Would be aswome to have arm rest on the inside for the highway runs... I remember going in a van which had arm rests... anyone know a model of car that has seats with armrests???

try a tarago or something like that. an engineers is not too expensive but it depends on how many item you get engineered. my last one cost me 400 bucks but that was my engine upgrade and seatbelts

Sorry my bad, forgot to mention except when your changing gears and thats about it. When i did my P's test in manual, as soon as i would change gears i had to return my hands straight to the steering wheel or they would of failed me (also advised by driving instructor). I'm simply assuming that if you have to do it in your p's test that it would be the law...not that i do it, just trying to prove a point

yea, it would be pretty hard to get sprung by the coppers for that tho. you might still be able hold the wheel with your elbow resting on an armrest... Armrest would also help hold you in your set around corners etc. Might head to a wreckers or something and go sit in some seats and find something i like.

While not on topic, I will enlighten you. The law does not state that your hand must be on the wheel. it states that you must be in full control at all times. (this I find hard to believe as most tests for your P etc are not test you on your driving ability but seeing whether you are good enough not to kill yourself or someone else. the testing and licensing in australia sucks but I am not the orical for the solution. So therefore, when using a mobike phone or eating etc you are deamed to not be in full control of your vehicle. It is the same for all those how shave or eat breakfast or apply makeup.

On topic.

Most engineers will go through the complete car. when I have had my cars done it has only cost $600 to go through evenything. My advice would be to do everything you intend to modify on the vehicle so that all can be given the big tick of approval. Just a side note. Make sure you trailer or flatbed the car to teh engineer. This way if teh engineer does not pass the car you can get it back home. It is illegal to drive a car that has just failed an engineer report, and is usually the job of the engineer to report the vehicle if you do drive it home.
