New alternator has no keyway for pulley? bad? (Got reply from seller, meant to be that way :S)
I feel alarmed and a bit pissed off...
fair enough, u buy cheap, u get cheap, but bought a new ebay alternator.
An old one i had, had a keyway for the drive pulley. This new alternator does not have a keyway machined into the front of the shaft for the
pulley.
Was this the way the later vw's (eg. mexican) just operated?
If it was a stupid chinese sweat shop F*^k up is there a way i can make it work? the rest of the internals are good and solid, and its in working
order (as it came with a test/output slip that appears genuine).
Thanks guys,
Chris.

Hi Chris
I wouldn't be surprised if they made hundreds of those just the same....
they don't really know what they are making... lol
they just think copy copy copy... so long as it looks the same...
An alternator without a keyway.. is like having disc brakes without the pads... lol
the other problem i've seen lots of... is the pulleys that bolt onto the alternator go on too far and bolt up against the alternator housing....
lol
so, I see they sell shims to fix this problem in the USA...
the belt is also offset when this happens , so if the pulley goes on too far but doesn't bind, then the edges of the belt get worn off...
If they are going to copy making things they need to get a German made set of calipers... lol
the chinese ones aren't accurate enough... lol

I got german master cyinder and brake cylinders yay! lol.
and decent shocks (kyb/cofab), cofab tie rod ends, ball joints, kotto bearings and brazilian steering damper. Some german hi flow pump and filter
too.
Hopefully teh car doesn't break all at once from cheapness with the other bits and bobs
I rekon the urethane torsion bar bushes and engine cradle mounts will be the first things to go on the front and rear end when this gal's back on the
road. Shame its gotta be that way. I will just have to keep an eye on it.

Hi Chris,
The engine mounts may be OK for a while...
but the nolathane bushes in the rear torsion bars
are a problem unless You used rubber grease on them..
as the rubber bushes actually twist as the nolathane ones cannot
twist but turn on the shaft...
so some lubrication would be good.. IMHO
cheers

DO NOT FOLLOW THIS ADVICE....
and if you think it's ok to run without a key in the pulley.....would you be interested in purchasing some NOS chrome muffler bearings? These are of
course suitable for single or dual mufflers.

I'll have a set of those muffler bearings, Matt. Oh, are they STD or 1st under-size? Do you have any tappet clearances left - metric ones
preferred.

Sorry to butt in on your thread, Chris, but while I'm waiting for Matt, it may be a good time to ask if anyone has any spare REAR negative camber
they don't need? It must be swing-axle neg., not that double-joint crap! I need about 2.5 degrees of it, and will gladly pay postage.

Chris, get a key way cut into your shaft, be the cheapest option from here. They aren't difficult to disassemble.
Greg, sorry dude, all out of negative camber, it's in high demand up here, as you know, things turn to crap when your rear end goes positive.

Can you take a picture of the shaft and alternator?
The ND Japan alternator that I use on my drag car uses no key at all,
as did the superchargers I used to run.
The adjacent bearing/spacer was used to clamp the face of the pulley's shoulder,
and only friction was required to drive.
All this means nothing if the shaft's bearing shoulder is only small, in which case a key way will be needed.
Lets hope it is not too hard a material to machine!

excellent job...
but large thumb prints on the chrome...??
what sort of people work at these places??
XD falcons had the plastic reflectors panted silver... lol
chrome is much better than silver paint....
and chrome I believe is much tougher then silver or rhodium
You couldn' t touch them with Your fingers...
and if You did You couldn;t wipe the reflectors as they would tarnish very easily...
