OK what engine Oil do You use and recommend??
Hi
As many of You know I have been using Castrol GTX 2 in My beetle since 2005 when it went on the road.
I change My Oil very frequently...
Less than the VW recommended 3000 MILES.. [5000klms]
sometimes 1000 klms sometimes 700klms or 1500klms the MAXIMUM...
but as I had forgotten to tighten hose clamps on an external oil cooler - hose came off last monday.. losing ALL the oil on the side of the highway..
refilled with New Oil... engine goes..
but something IS damaged... so the engine will be pulled down shortly... and I will change My Oil...
YES MY Brand of Oil..
Castrol has deleted GTX2 from their oils ...
Just read the PENRITE fact sheet on their classic car oils..
[as posted in My No Oil post.many thanks for that toplessbug]
These Penrite classic oils are Excellent Oils...
they also recommend 3000 miles... MAXIMUM.. use between changes
I haven't priced this oil yet... but have seen it for sale .. locally
so it may be the One...
BUT What Do You Use???

Penrite HPR30 suits me as it is compatible with the Beetle and my old Holden. I just buy 20L drum, and change the vehicles at 3000 miles.
I could buy ACE 30, or Penrite Classic light for the Beetle, or any brand for either vehicle, but for simplicity and value the 20L drum works well for
me.
Really at the end of the day, unless you have a specialist application, a quality brand standard oil will do the job.

Until I put the Subaru engine in the Microbus, I used Penrite HPR30 exclusively. The Subaru needs a very light semi synthetic, so it is separate now.

way my self as they have 20/50 and 15/40

I use ACE product oils, made by QPL in Australia.
It is an axcellent product formulayed specifically for VWs.
I recently went back to a thinner ACE 20 for the engine, and their synthetic for the gearbox.
yeha
Ace 30 would be what I would begin with for stock applications though.

Lee, firstly let me congratulate you on being 'man enough' to admit that it was your fault. Not very common these days.
HPR 30 is good oil.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

BradPen, forget which one?
or better yet Joe Gibbs DT50.
Penrite is good in water pumpers but I don't know how it works in a AC engine?

The best Castrol oil to use now is GTX 20W-50 in the WHITE bottle.
Confusingly, they also make another product with the exact same name in a grey bottle. It won't hurt your engine, it just won't give quite as good
protection against heat damage. So use the one in the white bottle.
This is the one you want:
