Ovals progress
For you Dan.Did some rubbing last night so demasked it for a pic this morning.Looks like the others are all gone.And 1 B4 I stripped it ready for
paint.

The inside and in the sunroof opening has been done and have had the sound deadener sprayed on each wheel well.The outside and small items this

Nice work Gary - lookin good. Are those Aurora Super Mag Plus spark leads you are using? If so, happy with them (if you have had the engine running
that is)? I have just fitted the same to my type IV.
You have so much space in the engine bay - I am jealous that you can actually access your cylinder 1 and 3 plugs without removing the carbs like
me!

No Alan-just big reds from Repco.Have had motor running quite a few times to sort out the carbs.One was flooding,so fixed that and set them up using a
gas analyser.Had the carbies overhauled about 4 years ago when this all began,and was a couple of years B4 I needed them.The Porsche fan makes the
engine look so small in the bay,which will allow plenty of room for mounting the breather and accessories.Barls-it's a 2.7lt(82 by 103) and I have
made 2 exhausts for it.First one was a Kombi extractor I modified, and was going to mount a hideaway muffler behind the right rear wheel.I didn't
have enough room for a decent sized muffler,so made another like an original type.It's still a little loud,so will make some small resonators inside
the tailpipes like the originals.I made the muffler from stainless and have had the whole lot ceramic coated in matt black to try and hide it a
bit.The muffler hangs a little low under the rear panel and looked like a set of dogs nuts hanging out the back end in shiny stainless.

Barls-I thought you had finished your exhaust.Did you get heaters sorted yet? My heaters will be one of the last jobs B4 rego.Will make a shroud
around the engine pipes and hook into the body tubes-but haven't figured yet where to get the fresh air from.Could probably hook into the body behind
the rear seat and suck cabin air thru the shrouds.Must order another of the bilge pumps.Keep us up to date with progress.I like to see what is
happening with all the Type4 conversions.

ive got one set up but am changing it to suit what im doing with the rest of the car. ill be redoing the heater box shrouds to match the changes. ive
got the bilge blowers installed but not much more.

CCC-I don't know much about the stuff-the painter tells me it's very expensive and they can mix it with the final colour so that it stays on a lot
better.Main reason I wanted it used was under the fibreglass guards to stop the stars appearing on the outside from stones flicking up
underneath.Painter thought it a good idea to do the body sections as well.

At last it's home again.Just over 4 weeks ago I started helping to get the colour on my Oval and today it was finished.Like so many others on here at
the moment-let the assembly begin.Had the trimmer come tonight to plan what he is going to do about the head lining and how we are going to fit it.I
want to change it a bit from original with how it fits around the rear window and will change how the hood bows attach to the body.

Dino-I think you are correct-The Mitsi Van I still have- the yellow Oval I restored in the late 60's, early 70's,and still had it when I bought a
nearly new Superbug in the same colour,and the GT I had for about 5 years from 1975.The purple Bug with my Oval was my brothers and in the back of the
pic was my Dads 56 Oval in Manly Tan.I had a couple of other yellow ones as well,but only shit and not worthy of a mention.

Yeah, go the XB would love to do one of those with a strong Lexus v8 in
it one day..... just to piss off the purists. But you would have to do a replica GT - the ridgy didge ones are worth MONEY now.
I was also wondering if you could clear up a couple of things...... the body shell is obviously an oval, but from the rear it has a superbug shape
engine bay and elephants feet lights on super bug guards...... are you doing two cars at once, or is this a hybrid bug ?
Either way, I reckon the yellow looks great.

There were a couple of reasons for the change-firstly needed an engine cover with vents to let some more air in to feed the fan,and also some more
room around the exhaust area.I have an Oval cover with vents grafted in,but it rubbed on the Porsche fan,so thought I would use one I had from a late
Bug with the four vents.To use that,the rear panel needed to be changed,so got one with the bulge from a late Bug--both issues solved.Bought Aero
guards which only take the big tail lights and thought about having them altered to get rid of the big lights-but thought may as well have the whole
back end look uniform and late model.Will be using original Oval bumpers though with over riders.If I was to do a replica GT,I would use a motor like
in my ute,but a 290 version.I put XA GT 4V heads on my XB,with a 780 double pumper and a got a new genuine cam and new extractors and centre mufflers
from a Phase 3 for it.I fitted an FMX auto to it later on,but the cam was that wild,the lack of manifold vaccuum used to make it act up,so had to get
a vacuum tank made like the Phase 3 had,which helped the brakes as well.It was a beast to drive and would pull hard to well over 140MPH.

Yeah the muscle cars in those days were more like sledghammers than the 'refined' examples we see today....
So is this the body which is going on the Auto pan then ? It will be one of the most unique beetles in Aus....

Very interested in your headlining ideas as I'll be putting in a steel sliding sunroof at some stage. I'm looking at something similar to Kim's
(Golde60) with only the centre section covered, but not sure how well it will work with the sunroof.
Guage cluster looks awesome too btw |

You can't do it with a steel slider-the side brackets are welded between the sunroof frame and the side frame on the body-head lining has to come
from the sunroof opening down those claw like things above the door opening and at the front corners it has to cover the drain tubes.Do you have the
sunroof yet? I would like to find some body who has one in original condition.When I cut this one from the donor-I can't remember how the headlining
was attached under the rear sunroof frame.I am going to make up some hood bows and lower the whole headlining about 25mm across the whole roof from
the opening- back.

Finished fitting the drain tubes for the sunroof-running them all out under the mudguards so will have no chance of water getting into the body
cavities to start rusting.Colour is a bit daggy at night with flash.
