How many cars is "too many"

Just for giggles I thought I'd ask a question that has amused me for many years.

See I have a darn good neightbour, one of the best mates one could have. He's been here for 4 years now and we share a brew daily. When he and his wife arrived he had 8 cars. Two were daily drivers, two were registered and vintage Plymouths and two were loooong American LHD convertibles....and he had 2 Desotos in need of restoration.

In the last 12 months he has added 6 more cars to the 'fleet'. The only one being restored is one of the Desotos. He is doing a top job of that. Today he arrived for his daily cuppa and (God bless his cotton socks) said "I've found another car". We live in a town and we are on one acre each. His yard is slowly building into what appears to be- a wrecking yard. He is 65yo. I doubt he'll be able to physically restore more than 3 of the cars he has. He plans to sell many of them but never does?? He promised his wife he would sell many last summer. But I know he wants more than what it cost him to import and people wont pay it.

Ok, so I should mind my own business. Well it isnt like that. I like my mate and as long as he is happy I'm ok with it. However I think his passion (obsession) is common. I knew 2 guys with the same issue. One a Chrysler fan with 40-50 in his yard (likely a good wrecking dollar there now) and one in Murchson Vic that Sims metal would like to salvage.

I think its an uncontrollable urge. I've had a taste of it myself when owning Lotus powered Ford Escorts. Collecting parts I'd never used but purchased them so others wouldnt get them in case "I needed them".

But one guy that took the cake was a mate around 1980 that rented a house in StAlbans Vic. His house had a loft and as it was an old farmhouse the loft had an exterior door and winch. He lifted door, bonnets, boot lids, everything to do with Vauxhalls from 1935 to 1965. Even parts for Vagabond Convertibles- rare and pricey.Tons of spares. He started getting eviction notices. He ignored them. Eventually the police kicked him out and the bulldozer moved in while he was working. Down the house crumbled. And everything went to the tip.

Are you a car collector? Have you got the "bug" (sic). Are you out of control?

well I do collect car stuff and cars.

I have a 20x10 shed full of storage boxes, large racking and various wooden shipping boxes on castors, all full NOS type 3 and VP commodore parts and various good aftermarket upgrades for both.

have some cars in the yard and paddock, not many though.

Currently in the shed.
type 3 notch, still! working progress, an expensive one :grind:
VP project car body(abandon now, will cut it up for repair sections)
99% restored/modified VR.

In the yard.

EB fairmont :grind: POS going straight to scrap soon.
Rare blue VP vacationer wagon parts car( to be raided and chopped up, then scrap)
Daily driver VP vacationer sedan, ultra rare blue one.

Paddock
VP berlina (the organ donor) served 3 or 4 cars and now serving a restored SLR5000 Torana out of all things

Thats all I have atm.

I tend to buy, thrash, strip, take what I need, sell and make money back or profit, scrap leftovers.

In the past had cars in the yard like
couple VNs, one still ran ok with blow apart engine block
2L Escort, could do 160Km/h in 1st gear wheel spin in the paddock, don't even know how.
Various later type 3s all years in fact 70,71,72,73 and one was EFI, was good as!
Restored a VW sprint car, insane! uncontrollable!
XA? ford wagon
VK commodore
ford XD
ford XF
ford EB
some British POS humber or something, guy left it there died long ago. car never went except to scrap :tu::rolleyes:
Early corolla
VB wagon with 253 POS!
Nissan EXA? hatchback. did not go, POS.
Lada samara sports hatchback LOL got a beating! learned 1st time how dangerous FWD is.
VW sandrail, hack job by PO so it went to the scrap, engine case went on the bon fire.

Sure there was more but I can't recall anymore atm.

How many is too many?

Not a fitting question to ask a car enthusiast.

But ask a car enthusiasts spouse..........may get a different answer.

?? I recall Brock had something to do with the imports of those things?

was there really a HDT lada?

It was funny when I had the lada as it was exactly the same as a mazda 323? and ford laser. like 95% exactly the same. I think they were all the same car just re-badged from one another.

Never a truer word said :lol::lol::lol:

All this thread is doing, is making me jealous of others and their collection. If I had more room, I would have more cars. I may also be single by then :fakesniff:

Yes there was a Brock Lada.

Limited edition, signed and numbered. I think it was kind of a joke.

A guy I know had about 3 or 4 of them.

lol never knew this.

joke just like Brock's fuel polarizer which HDT dismissed him from HDT after ridiculous claims on the polarizer "scientific" function.

I had hints of some involvement from people mentioning it and know GM supplied some of the EFI gear for the Ladas assembled here. Almost the same setup as the popular camira EFI system.

I sympathise with you guys. lots of cars is ok, too many in my view is when you cant mow the lawns anymore and they start being stacked vertically lol.

This thread has exposed the woman issue (its not sexist as in this thread its all men and their desires, no women car collectors cheesed at her man not liking the passion).

Had a partner that hated my model airplane hobby. She asked me how much money I'd spent in the previous 7 years on the hobby. $11,000 I blurped. She asked if I was proud of spending that much. "Well" , said "better than the $35,000 you've spent on cigarettes". I had to show her the maths to prove she was indeed smoking money and at least I had radio control units and engines to show for my money.

Trouble is some/most women dont like men having cars for a hobby. Unless the women get intrenched into the car club with other women as friends IMO. Women dont like men out in the shed indefinately. If a women has a hobby/sport then she is far less abrasive about the situation.

My first wife hated me restoring our Mark 3 Zephyr. Once it was restored our first outing was to Ford Campbellfield where it was parked at the office steps and photos taken. Out came dozens of staff including the editor to the employee magasine. I couldnt get a word in. Off she went explaining how much work went into it and the mechanical details. Amazing

This isnt a women hating post. it is to be truthful about the issues we, mostly men experience with their partner where it involves their passion, a passion we are entitled to have. For many of us its a balancing act family, children spouse and cars. It cant ever be just right. There is always too much time spent on the cars.

I say....there would be less time spent if they joined us under the bonnet, holding the welder and sharing the satisfaction when its rolling down the road. Then again how could we possibly help our lady create that quilt she's been sewing? Good at knitting fellas?
