Hundreds of jap import engine specs!

Below is a list of Japanese engines that you might be able to pick up cheap and use for an engine conversion. They are alphabetically ordered by manufacturer.
The engines are then ordered by size within each manufactuer.

A few notes;
* Japanese engines run on Japanese fuel which hovers around the 100octane mark. Therefore they are usually higher compression and higher performance than their Aust/US counterparts. If you use a jap motor, expect to have to run it on BP 98 octane fuel, or at least PULP.
* The japanese car manufacturers and government have a strange self enforced voluntary power limit on their engines. They all limit the max power of their production engines to 206kW/276HP/280PS. So when you see an engine listed with about 206kW, chances are it either has more than that, or is limited by the ECU to produce only that figure. Some people say that some of the new jap cars such as the STi 22B actually has more than it's claimed 276HP, closer to about 350HP. It is certainly possible to get a stock GTR motor to hit the 350HP mark with a simple ECU chip upgrade which get's around the stock limit by running the engine harder the whole way through the rev range. You can tell which engines are really ECU limited, by looking at the peak torque figures. If it's strangely low in the rev range, then it is being restricted somehow. A good example is the Mitsubishi 6G72 twin turbo, reaching a huge 426Nm at only 2500rpm. There is a rumour that the 206kW limit will soon be relaxed, it will be good to watch the power war if it is.
* Jap cars are also limited to 180kph max speed, these can also usually be gotten around one way or another.

Post any engines that aren't here, and I will add them to the list.

Conversions;
kW x 1.341022 = HP
Nm x 0.737561 = ft.lbs

JAP IMPORT SHOPS

Most are easily available, and quite cheap. Be wary of where you buy from, some places are good and some are bad. Use your judgement when talking to them to see how friendly they seem to be to deal with.

Me and Brad have both bought KLZE front cuts from Asian Auto Spares at slacks creek (07) 3208 0133 and have had no problems. They seem to be quite good to deal with.

Here are some import places in Australia with websites, I am not endorsing any of these companies but searching their sites will give you an idea of prices;

http://www.adelaidejap.com.au

http://www.japparts.com.au/

http://www.justjap.com/

http://www.sssautomotive.com.au/

http://www.japimports.com.au/ - website needs some updating

http://www.japanesemotorsport.com.au/ - no prices which sux

http://www.asianautospares.com.au/ - they don't get KLZE's anymore apparently...

you don't know of anyone that imports euro stuff for reasonable money do you? Be nice to get away from all the jap stuff, but when you can get a 160KW supercharged miller cycle mazda V6 complete front cut for $2800, a $2700 120kW VR6 bare motor kinda doesnt cut it :(

You can't readily get Euro stuff cheap. Jap stuff is cheap because of the weird japanese car tax/laws. Old jap car are worth nothing and can be bought in Japan for almost nothing. In fact if you have an old Japanese car you actually have to pay to get rid of it. So Japanese stuff finds it's way to Australia relatively cheaply.

Hi Wes

I have every issue of Zoom, I have subsribed since about issue #10 and I was so impressed when I bought around issue #10 I ordered all the back copies, so if you need any past articles let me know. It leaves all the other car mags behind because they dont get into the cars with the same depth as Zoom does.

Waren Mawson the previous editor grew up near me and always wanted to feature my car.

ok Wes the 2nd,

I don't have dimensional info on the subaru motors, but if you go to the link/archive post you will find this link

http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/files/SAE_boxer.pdf

It is an SAE paper written on the suby motors. You could use some of the drawings in it and scale them to get the motor sizes. This is what I did with my V6. I used a known measurement like the bore and stroke to scale the rest of the dimensions. If you get bored you can overlay them on the VW motor like I did with the V6. In fact 555bug has already done it. You may be able to find his old post, or ask him to email you the pics.

I'm teaching my Year 11 Geography students to plot data visually collected in primary research. I think I might plot this data you have here in a graph sorting by model and then kw. Although this is technically a secondarysource it will get the message across how large amount of data can be visually displayed. It will take a little while but I think for my students and for us it would be a worthy reference.

I would like to include original VW data (for comparison) so can somebody post the known outputs for the aircooleds and perhaps newer and/or modified VW mills.

Here in South Africa we get the Toyota 3CT diesel, I don't see it on your list?
It's a 2.2L Diesel 4cylinder (has a vacuum pump mounted on the top of the cylinder head cover)

Is this the place to ask about some of the Honda motors rotating in the other direction ( or is someone toying with me) Anyway if some of the Honda motors turn in the opposite direction could we mount it to a Subaru unmodified gearbox and stick in the back of our Vw ? It would open a lot more scope for mods. I know the gear box can work ok but not so sure about the diff rotating at 100kph in a direction it was not designed for.
Anyway just putting it out there
Cheers Bob.

I think Willy, the problem with that Idea is that you would be then running on "coast" side of the r&p. It used to be common place with vw/corvair conversions, problem is it is trying to force the 2 gears apart all the time by turning that way.
. No idea how long it would last in this condition though.

There isn't really an issue with running on the 'coast' side of the gears, even though theoretically that makes them weaker. The reversed ring and pinion for the Subaru transaxle actually runs on the coast side and we have had 360hp and 500nM through it in a 2000kg Vanagon without breaking it.

The issue is in spinning the helical gears (1st to 5th) inside in the opposite direction to what they were designed to do. Helical gears create a thrust load to one end of the shaft (depending on which way they spin). Spin them the other way and the thrust is reversed. So you may end up winding the shafts out the front of the gearbox instead of against the solid plates at the back of the gearbox.

Again, only theory and may last forever in the real world without obscene amounts of power and torque through it.
