Type 2 6 rib to Type 1 conversion


Does anyone know whats involved in converting a type 2 6 rib tranny to fit a type 1.

Also, I want to retain my swing axel suspension and run some sort of billet heavy duty axels so it can cope with my 300hp+ turbo engine.

Can anyone point me in the direction of someone in australia that is capable of doing a strong Type 2 tranny build up to suit my needs?

Ian, I have been using Bus transaxles in my drag car since 1993, but I kept it IRS. Albins gear sets & superdiffs are readily available. The engine will be off centre to the right about 1" if you center the drive flanges in the chassis...which will be the case if you convert it to swingaxle. The Dave Folts conversion is prob. about US$1200. Dave stoker made his own, but it would prob cost more to make here. I would suggest IRS, & Type 3 auto LEFT axles, w'bus CVs....Because the uni-joint in the swinger kit doesnt like much wheel travel. Also a Berg "BUS600" type kit to convert to type1 nose cone is worth the effort. Most guys just spend the dollars on their Type 1 , but in the long run the bus trans is twice as strong. I went from a fresh trans every meeting, to only one per year! Hope this helps.

Ian, what mods are done to your trans now? Also, if you want you can get Romac or Superboot to make 28 spline axles to take 930 or Comadore CVs. You can easily make the trans mounts yourself & an offset coupling for the shifter if you dont want to go the berg interm. housing. Have you got your big engine going?

Don't waste your time with commacore or 930 CVs. People only use the 930s for angle not torque. The rumour has it that sports sedans are using Kombi ones and they will take up to 400hp at the wheels safely. They are also a heap cheaper.

Yes pete, the kombi CVs are good...even better with an aftermarket cage....But the bigger CVs take a 28 spline axle, which you can convert your kombi CVs to if you want. (superboot does this) Oh yeah, the commadore CV does not have the travel (angle) capabilities of the 930. It has the same spline, bolt pattern, etc, but is skinnier.

I know Baja Wes has a 6 rib kombi box - although it is IRS. It may be an idea to call Brad at custom offroad on (07) 3356 4356. He may be able to offer some pointers.

i ahve also heard that a kombi box is the way to go for my conversion ideas. to handle around 300rwhp. t1 seems a waste of money.

I used a berg conversion. Never broke a kombi CV. Broke diffs and gears, even albins gears, but no CV's.
