hey noice bus..
yeah testing in da bus may give the stereotypical media driven impression of a jobless bum surfie type who needs another lesson in failure..
so the ricer may be a good idea
but then again the testing officer may dig your wheels and wanna test out the mobile love machine.. ;)
decisions decisions..

or if you go for test in the kombi
the instructor might take into account
that they are a bit more to drive than
a small car & if your confident in her it
would go in your favour.
plus the fact that you have a kombi & not a ricer which could give the instructor the idea of no not another hot head. (just an observation)
good luck with the test

yea, i will see how it all turns out... Maybe if i get a lesson i will ask the instructor if its a good idea. In 4 months time i would be pretty comfortable driving the bus round tho. Cant wait to go on a surfing trip up the coast with some mates :thumb

more pics of the rebuild and that at http://www.bytevision.com.au/dee/kombi/

Your "weird tubing" is the fuel tank breather system. The ends inside the engine bay sould connect to a charcoal canister. If you don't have it, into the air cleaner will do. They can occasionally get fuel coming out, so don't just leave it upen!

yes 76camper do as andy says very important that
the breather hose is connected & in 1 pic the steel
hose is joined by a rubber hose normal but the rubber
hose looks old & no clamps holding it on,good idea to replace them fuel hoses any parts place repco, supercheap have them.
1 of the reasons kombi's catch on fire is that breather system ppl dont know & ignore it.
i used to do safaris many a year ago, nothing better
than waking early to the crisp sound of sets breaking on an out of the way beach, hit it for a session then start up the stove for a cuppa & beans or bacon & eggs just sitting there watching the swell rolling in
mind you 30odd years ago there was a lot more secluded breaks around than now but still would
be good. enjoy

sounds PERFECT winerot!!! Did you used to paddle out on your single fin? I got a couple of oldies lying round here... lots of fun surfing the older boards!

Yea, i was told to block those tubes up. I cant see any way of connecting them to the air cleaner... I will block em up for now just so they dont leak fuel. Can you show me a pic of what its sposed to look like? How can i connect them to the air cleaner box?

okay 76 i borrowed your pic but no carbon box in sight
see the fan mounted at top of bay in front of that should
be a box ends are oval shape mounted to the fire wall thats where it should be, anyway not there but dead centre up top those two steel hoses are the fume hoses
supposedly connected by a tee section & then to the box,
BLOCK them off.
tell you why one night travelling north stopped at armidale freezing, petrol attendant filled kombi i paid & jumped in to start strong fuel smell checked motor bay & fuel was pouring from those two tubes, i asked how much did you put in he said as much as i could.
i blasted the shit out of him & had to drain some fuel.
petrol out of ground tanks is cold going into a warmer tank in the kombi, petrol does expand a lot due to conditions its in therefore i never go past first click when filling

WOW, lucky you smelt it before you hit the road. Would have been all over. Does it effect the engine if the tubes arent connected properly but just blocked off? Anyone got a pic of them set up as they were wen they came out of the factory?

DON'T plug them, it will create a vacuum in the tank, which may cause you to run out of fuel.

Scroll to pics at the very bottom:
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/VacuumHosesCarb.html

Trouble is this setup varied year to year, and country to country. The above pics are of an early US bus.
The idea never changed though, the charcoal canister has three connections, one large hose on one end connects to the fan housing, the opposite end has one large and one small connection, the small one Tee's to both tank breather lines, the large one to the air cleaner.

My '77 has the canister mounted to the fuel tank cover plate and the air tapping from the fan housing near the coil (LHS of motor). The later square plastic air box's have a port on top of the air box which is meant to connect to the charcoal canister.

Some early Aust. delivered bus's have the fuel tank breather tubes Tee'd together and connected directly to the top of the air box.

ive got the charcoal canister on the fuel tank coverplate also. I was wondering what that extra hole was for! Im not sure i have all of the peice to the fuel evapouration system, should i just use fuel tubing to connect each of the metal tubes to the charcoal canister?

I had a look at those pic's... Maybe i will move the charcoal canister to where it is in those pics and then connect the tubes as those pic's show. Good idea?

good move andy that ratwell site would have to be
a must for anyone working on kombi's expert or novice.
76 have a browse at the site there would have to be good examples on it about the breather hoses & connections.
its amazing how many ppl dont know about it & how important it is or dangerous it is none more than the tee section which is above & slightly right of the coil in most kombi's(the coil is a match waiting for fuel to spill on)

Fuel hose is fine for the connection. You can use vacuum hose for the air connections on the canister also (don't think you will find ~12mm fuel line).
I don't see the point in moving the cannister, but no issue if you want too. Connecting as per that pic will be fine.

I got heaps of fuel tube left over... dunno where it all comes from but we got heaps. Im going to try and clean up that whole system using this diagram http://homepage.mac.com/ratwell/.Pictures/FuelHose/09-FuelBreatherHoses.jpg  and then try and connect the tubes to the charcoal canister. Will let you know how i get on. Thanx for the help so far, i really appreciate it!
