Engine started, but now big problem
Well yesterday i started the engine in my 1961 bug,
Hasnt been started in a year or so, it took me all day with the help of a jerry can of fuel a tractor battery and a 240v powered battey jump
starter.
It took all day, the fuel pump aint working so i had 2 pour fuel down the carby. It started once and ran for about 3-4 seconds. It bought a big smile
to my face!
But after however my battery jump starter is toast it was really hot and a burning smell coming from it. now it wont turn on, its stuffed. the battery
terminals were so hot i burnt my hand on them getting them off.
Whats happinging here fellas any help please.
The engine will be going as soon as i find a good cheap 1600tp
but i want to have sumfin running on that car.

was the polarity of the wires right? sounds dumb but anyone can make the mistake.
how many volts are coming through the cables?
First check your earth, then the voltage coming out of the motor. Should be no higher than say 13v.
voltage regulator stuffed?
did you put a 12v battery in a 6 volt car?

your starter motor and or the solenoid could be burn out, stuck in the on state demanding power
this will cause the battery to continue to pour power into the starter motor causing the battery to overheat and overheat anything supplying the
battery with power
happened to a 2L starter of mine ruined starter motor ruined battery

Sounds like you overloaded the jump starter.
They probably have a pretty low duty cycle, and it sounds like you pushed it a bit much.
Sorry but that's what it sounds like to me.

Yes those jump starters are made to be used on a car with a flat battery, not one that isn't going...
To see if the car will go....
You will need to undo the 5 or so screws on the top of the carburetor, and fill up the fuel bowl...
and put it back together...
then it should start & run for a few minutes....
until the bowl runs out of fuel ...
If You have a bottle of fuel and place a hose into the bottle. and the other end of the hose to the fuel pump..
You will see if the fuel pump is working or not...
If You are trying to start the engine with old fuel in the tank... stale fuel could be the cause....
engines don't like stale fuel.... empty the tank and put some new fuel in it... that is, after You have tried the method with the bottle
mentioned above...
Is the fuel tap lever sitting upright or at 3 o'clock...
If its in between, the fuel is turned off...

if u wanna laugh heres what i did
i put a spare 1600 i had in the back of my 70 bug
it hadnt been running for over 4 years
none of the 300 spare fuel pumps i had would work plus the fuel hoses are a mess and everywhere for the old efi rotary so i just sat an old whipper
snipper fuel tank on top of the roof and connected it straight to the carb
it ran for 20 mins or so at 1500rpm till it ran outta fuel
