king pins worn on the splitty


the kings pins on the 67 splitty have too much play. Bird the blue slip mechanic says to use some type of nylon instead of grease. He reckons they push all the grease out and fill it up with hot nylon product and when it cools there is registerable movement.
How hard is it to redo the king pins any suggestions. I want it to last until mid next year when I will replace with ball joints and put on discs.

Thats would only be a band aid fix

better off getting the new bearings and having them fitted

Is the king pin material surface hardened. As in can I turn the pins down to the required size and fit to oversize bushes? Do I need to by special bushes or can I buy correct material and turn them myself? What type of jig do I use to ream the bushes?

Pumping body filler into balljoints is an old dodgy car-yard fix. I recall reading that someone was doing similar with polyurethane (material used in poly suspension bushes) for a slightly more substantial 'dodgy fix' but you are much better off doing it properly. I had my Country Buggy ones doen a few years ago for about $500

Yep you can machine the king pins in a lathe.
They are case hardened but it can be done.
You can buy the bushes from Wolfsburg west (they look like brass). But mine are made from Phosphore bronze I think , standard I think the top bush is just plain bronze and the lower one looks like sintered metal of some type.
As for reaming them out. They should be done with a pilot like in the Bentley manual.
So they are aligned. I imagine they could also be machined on a mill, with a long boring bar.

I have taken the front axle assemblys out and the upper and lower king pins need to be pressed apart. Has any one out there done this as in what type of press is needed.
