kombi 1800 top end rebuild pics
G'day,
Here are some pics of the rebuild I just did on my type 4 kombi engine.
New 34mm exhaust valves and valve guides were fitted and the piston rings were replaced and the cylinders honed. Some rust was repaired in the battery
trays since it was such a good chance to get in there.
About 6 months ago I had a terrible engine fire which damaged a lot of the wiring as well as the paint. I was able to do everything except the
alternator wiring which had serious insulation damage and basically I couldn't trust it. I was able to rewire and service the alternator with the
engine out more easily so in the end I thought...what the hell I'll just pull it out! This lead to removing the heads "just to see" their
condition. I was glad I did! One of the exhaust valves had sunk back into it's insert (valve seat) quite badly and was leaking. Hey you could see
daylight through where the valve face and insert met! After that I thought it would be wise to change the rings as well as the clutch plate, front
seal and flywheel o-ring, all gaskets, push rod tube seals etc etc etc while the engine was out. Also had the flywheel machined and replaced the
clutch throw out bearing. Since the bearings, cam and lifters appeared in excellent condition I decided not to split the case.
An interesting thing I discovered was that this is an 1800 cc engine. It was sold to me as a 2 litre. Oh well I'm not complaining!
As I type this the new engine has done 300km and runs better and smoother than I had hoped for! Will change oil & filter at 500km and adjust valves
again.
The heads were serviced by KC's in Castle Hill and the tinware was blasted, repaired and powdercoated by Envirostrip at Enfield. The rest I did
myself. I had a mate to help refit the engine of course!
Anyhow I took some pics. Hope you enjoy them!

Cheers Bond!
I host the pics off my free ISP web space and just link them all. Saves AVD bandwidth too!
