simple, albins gears, limo diff, built by DB with requests for every trick he has...........but do it properly and do a kombi box 
five speed is waste of time (and yes i have one in my car, but have also driven a ej20 with balls).................. these things have power and
tourque enough to pull whatever final ratio you choose and bigger rpm drops would suit it better than a close ratio box that would be the norm for us
aircooled guys
you could get real smart about it and dyno the car and build a nice four speed that uses the max tourque (via rpm drop) in the first couple of gears
then, drops fair on max HP when it goes to fourth............all this after you have selected a final drive that has it come on boost at the 115km/h
mark?...........unless you are aiming more for a track monster
don't gear to tall in first nor fourth................frying clutches with a tall first is no fun and you dont need the car to be capable of 300km/h,
just have enough legs to run down your favourite circuits straight.
had the notch out recently.............it's geared very tall and those gears dissapear in the blink of an eye............the streets suddenly seem
much shorter, smaller and scarier.......... MAKES IT A GOOD RACE CAR........
good to see that rear sway bar is back...........would be nice to see some 27mm torsion bars in the parts inventory too ..........
kombi CV's and 228mm clutch are goooooooood 
you would be surprised how many aussie drag cars have those kombi boxes when you start nosing around
build a kombi box!!!!!!!...........ask DB why he has one

Like, how much modifying will i need to fit the kombi box in if it's that much stronger than the beetle box? Ain't much room left!

easily installed, just a couple of special mounts and using a land or berg intermediate housing........but can we blow the budget out to $6K
pleeeeaase ............get the box built and go after a limo diff next
year.
what are we lookiong at.....(and these are guesstimated)
mounts and intermediate $1200
albins gears $1600
new parts $1100
core/second hand parts $700
labour $1100
porsche CV/axle kit (penrose) $1000
new clutch/flyweel/pressure plate $1000
less sale of used gear $$$$?
limo diff next pull down $3000
as you know, the flywheel, clutch etc you currently have will be easily sold, as there is always demand for them if you go this road and to the bigger
kombi clutch.

kombi box is the way to go, dont know about the aircooled not having as much torque as a ej20t, from the lower rpm i would think vw makes more. Any
turbo drag vw has a tall first so it makes boost, a short first wont make boost at all or bearly any than you can set up a even spread after that.

So are there any beetle box votes?? need more advice. Should check with Westi too what it would cost to stick the kombi box in - everything is tight
and close - not sure if a kombi will blow out cost over a super strong beetle box.
What can you do with the beetle box?

heehee - slightly, but its ok - i've gotten away with it by selling 10years worth of music stuff i don't use anymore - the g-box will be my xmas
pressie (plus my saved 'pocket money' )
What are you using for your box reub?
Dave, if your reading can you share input. I feel a little bad bothering Dave all the time as i hadn't given him a cent yet - so im trying to do some
research without PM'ing Dave a million questions - just so i work out a little of what i want and then tell DAve - i want this, what do i need, how
much.
From talking to Dave he says he can make a strong beetle box - but how strong depends how much money i throw at it - so i'm trying to work out whats
best for strength vs cost vs mod's to existing conversion.

I'm lucky to have a Porsche G50 in VWRX, however it needs to come out. I think one of the bearings has gone in it, and from what I understand it is
cheaper to fix now rather then when it goes bang 
It will eventually venture to Dave, where he can share the anatomy of a G50 with everyone via photos. A certain aircooled engine has taken priority
for me at the moment...
Good luck with your research. Given the quality of the build on your car I wouldn't scrimp for the best solution, which I'd guess to be a kombi box
for maximum strength.
Porsche stuff is just to bloody expensive so don't go there

I heard from a guy local to me that Renault gearboxes can go in a bug and are pretty strong. Fraid I didn't ask from what model but maybe worth a
look into.

Hi Mick,
don't be afraid to U2U me or ring or email.
I am more that happy to share advice here though, for all to share.
There is no doubt that the Bus box is a better option,
BUT without allowing for it at the beginning of the project, it will be a problem to fit it all in your car.
Plus the additional cost of a 2lt core,
and the aftermarket intermediate housing,(and labour to fit),
are probably negatives in YOUR CAR.
The splines where the CV flanges go are probably the only complication I think,
and you can order the Quaife diff from England (via New Zealand) that has the larger 002 Bus splines.
The Albins gears are no problem and will fit your late box.
The only other issue is keeping the crrownwheel and pinion in mesh,
and with the single side cove trans, this can be dealt with to an acceptable level.
Gearing wise, see how yours drives after the conversion is done,
and see if you can talk with BIFF,
who has a similar conversion on his bug with
the 3.0 first, 2.00 second, 1.26 third anf 0.82 fouth gear.
I would probably select something slightly different, but untill you try yours,
that would be a good guide.

I'm no Renault nut , but I have seen both the 5 and 4 speed Renault box's in Volksies, the 5 speed is the UN5 and I believe the 4 speed to be called
UN1. The stock gearing is useable with BIG offroad rubber 33's ok but 35's are better, otherwise Albins does do a full set of gears if you want to
do a rebuild. They have a 10 1/4" diff and are good for 400hp off road or 700hp street/track. The 5 speed is LONG though and requires pan surgery,
splitting the torsions and running short bars with long cap spring plates does the trick. Mak in Bris still has a 4 speed for sale, and this was in a
bay window kombi with offroad rubber and 930 joints, here is a

the reno box is very strong but to run in a street car you will need to change the diff as they come with 5.4 ratio. Albins do a 3.88 diff but cost is
$2500 so it added up but depends on what you want to do with the car.

The splines on the IRS bug box are a weak area.
You can order the Quaife with a larger diameter 1800 BUS spline.
With just a spacer and a seal change, the bus CV flanges will go on, thus eliminating that problem area.
The RHINO Case or Autocraft case are strong options,
but really require TWO, FULL CIRCLE side covers, and a through bolt/stud.(see westi's trans),
to be as good(perhaps a little better...autocraft case much better but $$$!) than the later SSC case.
The only advantage of an aftermarket side cover on the NON LOAD side(rhs) is
if you tie both sides with one or more through studs.

better be!! yeh, its really close - still need to tie in to the shock mounts and a few little things i want to get done while its on the shop - then
maybe some teething pains. But yes, definitely planning for Warrick - i'll tow it up, spend a week working up there, spend the long weekend at
