yup first thing to check when ur engine gets the shudders happening
i cant remeber which but one of my bugs the fan had a nom nom on the numberplate light wiring
found shredded peices of it everywhere in the cylinder and heads fins when i took all the tinware off
there was a bug that came into the garage years back with a huge chunk of the firewall tarboard in the fan
nearly went a similar way

Yeah I had that happen to my Baja bug when I took it to Moreton Island once..... only thing I noticed was the engine got real hot in the soft sand. I
didnt realise what it was at the time, so parked it up most of the time we were over there, and I only found out the problem when I got back to the
mainland.....could have been driving all over the island if I had found it.....

24 years ago on my honeymoon, on our way back from Noosa we stopped at Byron in the Youth Hostel. We had the only room with an ensuit. Anyway, our 72
superbug started to make a fluffing sound and started to overheat. I think the local vdub guy was at Lismore. We nursed the car over there and the guy
had a listen and told me to shut her down. He lifted the engine lid, removed a heap of dried flowers from the engine bay and then reached in behind to
the fan and pulled out a strip of toilet paper! My mates had written stooge on the inside of the lid as well. Had a nice run home after that. Averaged
about 43mpg as well.
71 super in progress.

rag was probably been laying loose in the engine bay and would have just been sucked into the fan
bay kombis have some nice big spaces on the sides of the engine bay that rags get left in

Hi Greedy 53,
Did the oil pressure light not come on, if your mototr got that hot that it was going to cook itself the light should have come one.
Make sure your oil pressure light is working for the new motor.
Cheers,
David

the only tell tale was the slowing of the ute no lights i stoped once to see if the rear brake was on it just sat there and ideled away happily so on
i went next thing it just would not pull so i stoped again no worries but a lot of smoke so ordered a tow drove it onto the tilt and home drove it off
but now had a really bad knock and end of story
as for how it got there it wasn't me i only aquired the ute 2 months ago and it must have been there all along the previous owner only drove it
around his farm so no long trips to get it hjot until i came along
