door thingy on fridge burner

There's a door thingy that covers the hole on the burner on my Electrolux gas fridge. Should it be open or closed for normal fridge operation?

It's open in this pic:

Well it makes no difference to the operation of your fridge.

But if it's open (as it is in the photo), you can easily see if your pilot light is lit. This is the way mine is.
