Same as Jak, after market ECU and no problems. I had tried to run the subi ecu from the start but always had gremlins

Hi Joel,
I too had my pod filter sitting under the air vents under the back window. Thats when I cracked a piston skirt due to too hot air intake temps, BUT, I
put mine on the track & it's turboed. But still , I would have the pod filter totally enclosed from the engine bay, at least it will be legal
then as well.
As for the decklid, I would definantly go back the original with the slots in it, they actually let hot air out, not in, so would help with the
heatsoak that our Subie engines are renown for.
If u want to check your intake temps, just get a probe with digital display form jaycar, cost me $45. Not totally needed though since u are normally
aspirated.

ahh you two are a crack up
now i have both lids painted up all ill do is swap the vented one in summer and warmer periods and the non vented one for monsoonal periods like we
seem to be having atm.
no joke it hasnt stopped raining in over 36hours
but atleast all my tanks are full
takes me 30 secs to swap them over,

i am so over rain at the moment its not funny
was getting chronic fucking cabin fever being stuck in the house so i decided to do the little kid thing and chuck on some gumboots and go vent my
frustration in some puddles
nah not really but i did stick my head in the shed and thank god my bug is still intown at mum and dads cos my poor laser is submerged
its only 1" deep and barely wetting the tyres  but
thats beside the point
i cant get in it without getting my feet wet

nope the stock ECU sensor.
the fan switch sensor is in the top radiator hose as it comes out the engine at the back of the car. I used to have it at the front but the engine
used to heat up too much before the sensor caught the drift. I tried lowering the deg setting but then the fans ran for too long.
also, just reiterating what Jak said re lower air temps making a huge difference. Drove mine all day yesterday in 25deg outside and the temp never got
much above 87-88 deg. For the last few months it's been 90deg on the freeway. Funny how much difference it makes. If I drive it in winter on a rainy
day, it struggles to get above 85deg.
p.s. I'm loving my heater, I know people think I'm a nana for having one in a buggy, but that hot water powered heater is awesome.

im undecided at this stage yet if i'll put a heater in, dont really need one much around here
i did have working vw heaters for ages but removed them as i just never used the car when it was cold
im thinking my water temps stay so consistant cos i have a nice short heater return loop with no heater core inline.
works well in a subaru but in a vw which usually have the heatercore along way from the engine can cause overheating
most of the vanagon guys have real dramas cos the heater cores in those are so big and there usually 2 of them too, they have to run an extra bypass

Aside from the few people that have been for a ride in it noone has seen what accelaration is like so here ya's go

that was vid 1 of 2.
first one i took down a street in the industrial estate which was probably a stupid move and secondly i made the rookie mistake of hitting rev limiter
in 2nd gear
dunno how many of you have heard a subi with a big exhaust hitting the rev limiter but it sounds like a dog barking
as you can see i got a dumbshit speedo, i need to try another in it
its bit slow to register properly and according to GPS it reads 5km/h fast which is probably because of my front tyre size.
but that taken into account works out to roughly 0-100 in 6.5sec which is over 1 sec quicker than my blown 1776
seeemed strange at first, they're both putting down about same power but then i twigged..... its the rev range
my 1776 only has a balanced non c/w crank so i dont take it over 5k
the EJ hits revlimiter at 6.5k so im still in 2nd by the time i hit 100km/h
the 1776 was in 3rd and ready for 4th at about 115km/h
not a bad effort for a 15 year old $550 engine
same time as the current SS commodore

Nothing like that subi rumble bouncing of concrete dividers, not that my camera picks it up over the wind noise
but anyway a good example of how these engines will happily lug about in town traffic
Find me a 150hp VW engine that will effortlessly pull out of a round-about from 40km/h in 4th like that with an Lbug gearbox and still get less than
8.7L/100km and I'll gladly swap back
Seeing as I've just ticked over 5000kms since the new engine went in I suppose I should update, except there's not really much to update about
I've had 5000kms of trouble free motoring, my average tank gets 8.7L/100km with mainly round town running about and the drive out to my house is
20kms of winding hilly rural road so it's not exactly ideal economy conditions
but still not bad for a 2.2L 100kw engine, my 1.8L 92kw laser under the same conditions only gets 8.2L/100km
gets alot better on the motorway naturally, best ive got so far is 7.2L/100
The coolant level has not been touched since the engine went in and when cold is still at the same level as when it went in back in late November
I have swapped to a new stepper movement style temp gauge for better accuracy though
I checked the calibration of it and the old gauge when i swapped them and as I suspected all along my old gauge was reading high.
7c to high to be exact, but the new one is spot on to the degree
So it turns out that it's happy temp that it always likes to sit on is really 82c
It's become fairly obvious that I've over engineered my cooling system, in that 5000kms the cooling fan has only ever come on twice and that was
sitting in the bumper to bumper traffic trying to get into Byron at easter time
It doesnt run cool though, infact no matter what ambient temp from cold it only ever takes 6-8 mins to hit 82c and it just sits there never drops
below and has to sit stationary for a good 10 mins before the fan comes on at 95c
All that with a stock genuine subi thermostat and water pump, I'll be interested to see how hooking up my heater effects it though.
After Valla i gotta drop it out to do a few jobs like hooking up the heater and fixing the epic oil leakage I have happening at the moment, it's just
like having a real VW engine in there
In a rush to get the new engine in i didnt do the best job in sealing the sump when i swapped it and my rocker cover gaskets are leaking too
the bodywork is in the way to get them off with it in situ
Also while its out #2 cylinder is burning a touch of oil after highway runs so i gotta pull it down and find out why
Its still has perfect compression and doesnt do it with low speed town driving for some reason
the Subi Guru here says its common on these jap import motors that spend ages just idling in traffic that the rings gum up we shall see anyway, may
just be a a crook valve stem seal
but I'm gonna run some of that subi upper engine cleaner that everyone raves about through it and see if that makes any difference
