Michelin invented the steel belted radial tyre many years ago..

Long before any other company thought of them..

they are an excellent tyre...
long wearing also....

145 or 155 x 15 tyres are now vintage tyres and not as cheap as they used to be... due to the low manufactured numbers..

Well, they're not really a normal tyre for daily drivers anymore, as they went out of production. They're now only produced in small batches for show cars who want the 100% period correct look, and priced accordingly. Obviously you can get much better tyres to drive on for that money, but if you want the vintage look then you need the XZX. I mean, seriously, you can get a good set of used wide wheels AND a set of new tyres for that much! I'm not actually sure whether they were the factory-fitted tyre for Beetles or not, but they were definitely factory fitment on Citroen DSs and similar classic French cars.

From memory i think they fitted Dunlop B7 crossplies origionally in Aussie the Radials didnt come out till later

The Michos are extramly nice and quite to drive on

I have them 165 x 15s fitted on my other two Stock cars
even though the tyres on those cars are old they run quite and have a bit of hang on grip as well

Aussie cars probably had Dunlop B-5 cross plies. If you were really unlucky, you'd get Hardies (nasty things). Some imports had B-7s.

I managed to get a set of s/hand Michelin X for my Beetle-in 1961, and they were my road and race tyres. They were OK, once you got used to them 'letting go' suddenly!

Cheers, Greg

Not as good as Michelin, or B7s, but better than Hardies.
