So i got a little bit of shed time today, i started fabbing up a new weld in midmount for the gearbox but got stuck with that so i went on to mounting my new fuel system... I have a couple of questions, i'm running a bypass style reg for a return system, i only have 1 boss on the top of the tank which i was using as a breather,do i need a breather?? can i just use that boss for the return?? And also, i notice most people put the reg in the engine bay but is there any reason i cant just put it up the front with the rest of the fuel system?? It'd just save running a return line the whole lenth of the car thats all...

cheers
mick

You need to have a breather for the tank and with the reg at the rear I think it will give a more accurate pressure reading being closer to the carbs

Ok, what if I put the reg near the tank and the gauge near the carb??

Yep, for now. When I can afford to give it a decent paint job I'll look into a 1 piece front end. Until then she'll remain a heavy old pig!

You still need a breather on the tank

Everything I read in my fuel system research said FPR needs to be as close to the carb as possible.... That's what I did, and works a treat.... Just make sure your return line is as large, or larger than your feed.... I run 1/2" lines all round.

Really? I read that the return should be slightly smaller than the feed so it was easier to keep pressure...

Yes. That's why I moved it to the front. Return pressure was messing with pump pressure. I was using the old fuel tube as the return. Much better now

In my case, I have a fuel pump that is a little on the 'overkill' side.... I have a Carter Black which I think runs at around 15psi.... Really too high for my hp..... And this might be part of the reason for the issuses I experienced....

But anyway.... The reg controls the pressure and flow back to the tank.... Not the line.

A small return line will restrict the flow back to the tank, which puts strain on the pump and the fpr, which causes fluctuations and cavatations in the line.... The result is erratic pressure and flow control.... A larger return line allows for faster return to the tank, less stress on the pump and consistent pressure control.

At least thats what I found after going through 5 different fuel system setups.

If your running pump fuel I can't see any benefit in mounting the reg up the back with the need to then run a line all the way back to the front. As long as you measure the pressure at the carb and can sustain pressure and flow all is good. Just a short return line into the tank. Methanol might be a different story.

You could be right Andrew.... I don't know.... I did mine this way, as that was conventional thinking, but I don't think it's the only way.... Your option allows for shorter lines, and less fuel being carried in the car, which is good thing.... I placed the fpr at the rear of the car, and close to the carb as that is what the paperwork said to do.... Yours obviously works, as does mine... Many way to skin that cat.
