Leaking Transaxle

Hey all.

I picked up an IRS transaxle that will be going into my Baja shortly. I pulled it out today and had a good look at it.
It appears that it has been leaking from the LHS sidecover.

How hard is it to fix this? Is the cover a gasket seal or an O-ring?

If I remove it am I going to bugger up the ring and pinion settings?

Lastly, how do I remove the CV flange? Is there a nut or circlip on the inside somewhere?

I would be saving this box for when you finnaly see the light and fit a manual to your other car , AND AS FOR THE BAJA , PUT A BLOODY KOMBI BOX IN IT OR ELSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eleanor is never going to be manual!!! How dare you even suggest such a foolhardy idea!

And this box is not a superbug IRS, it's from a Type 3. So it has low enough ratios to do me for the time being. Especially once I get my new engine.

I can't fit a Kombi box until I do a body lift!

It will still be quite tall in first gear as a type 3 box is similar or same ratios as a 1500 swinger , what diff ratio has it got ???

if it's a type 3 box it will have a code like dd or something
the cv flange has a plastic cover over the centre and under that the will be a clip

Hi

pop out the centre plastic seal and undo the circlip and take off the flange...
You will see the oil seal there... best to do both sides...
You will need two new plastic cap seals too...

I believe it will be the axle seal... leaking

cheers

Gearbox is a DC code

Diff - 4.125
1st - 3.78
2nd - 2.06
3rd - 1.26
4th - 0.89

With my tyres it should give me 2500 RPM at 100km/h.

I won't be changing to this gearbox until I get my new engine, I know this will kill the current 1600.

Now back to the topic of this thread.
So I will need two axle seals (lip seal I'm assuming?), two of the caps for the CV flanges. But not the side cover? Do they not normally leak from here? Only from the axle seal?

Yes,
the gearboxes don't normally leak...

only the seals -- if they have worn down
when fitting oil seals [yes. lip type] always place a few drops of oil in between the two lips to lubricate the seal,,
this should be done on all twin lipped seals , otherwise the seal will wear down until oil can get to it, resulting in very little of the lip to wear...

the 4.125 ratio differential gearboxes are OK in beetles..
Many earlier beetles have the 4.375 ratio differentials
and they go OK... good acceleration...

a bit higher revs at speed... better than having 14 inch wheels... lol

cheers

x2

It may have been the engine with bad cooler seals or cracked case. Or CVs with normal grease ....

Too tall gearing for my liking, your engine will be out of its power and have a slower fan speed....but you know that:crazy:

Yeah I know that. And I completely agree with you.
This is just a temporary measure until I can find the time to fit a Kombi box. The swingaxle that in it is completely stuffed. Syncros on 1st and 2nd are almost completely gone and it has started to frequently jump out of 4th.

With regards to the fan speed, I'm going to keep a very close eye on this and hopefully it won't be too much hotter. If not I'll just have to fast track the lift kit and Kombi box.

With a 10* kit a kombi box fits without a lift kit.

Yeah I know. But I want to put a lift in the car anyway so I don't much see the point of making up one mounted system for the gearbox then changing it in 6 months time. Plus a 10° kit won't fit a Vanagon box :D
