generator to alternator query

how do you modify the wiring on a 68 12v bug to change from generator to go to alternator. i know you need to bypass regulator as alternator is self regulated. but not sure exactly how to go about it. cheers

You connect the wire from your ignition light to the D+ terminal and a large wire from the B terminal on the alternator to the positive post on the starter motor. this cable will have to handle the output of the alternator.

the alternator has a d+ and a b+. the d+ is a bolt style connection and the b+ a push plug connection. do you disconnect the wires from the generator regulator under the back seat, ie bypass it or leave it connected. cheers

D+ the idiot light, b+ is the thick cable that goes to both sides of the regulator under the back seat, you need to join the one that goes into the regulator with the one that goes from regulator to the battery ,effectively taking out the genny regulator, heres a couple of diagrams

I too am interested in this conversion, however different folks are saying different ways of connecting the alternator, with respect to the D+ and B+ terminals. Looking at the above options and even doing a Google, I am still confused. Can anyone explain please

D+ (dynamo positive) becomes B+ (battery positive) by joining the the big cables together either at the alt B+ post or in the wiring (usually undfer the seat). The exact wiring mods vary depending on year of car
