Colgate Toothpaste imported from South Africa sold at Woolworths

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/100202/colgate-toothpaste-imported-from-south-africa-sold-at-woolworths

rose ·

On the shelf with all the other tooth paste with no sign of it being imported from South Africa

The other day I brought some colgate tooth paste the one I have been buying for years now. An elderly couple at my local Wooworths said what I was thinking that they change packaging all the time. I didn't think anything of it until I used the toothpaste and it tasted crap so I read the packaging and it comes from Nairobi WTF was I puting in my mouth it also says in very small print on a little sticker This product has been Directly imported, the formulation & taste may differ from products generally sold in Australia.
I'm taking both lots of it back to Woolworths tomorrow and getting my money back and buy some that comes from Australia SO BE CAREFUL. What a shock they should have on the tags at the shop that it's imported from africa. If I want to buy that shit I would have went to the $2 shop.

vlad01 ·

?? dude! its just tooth paste.

cb john ·

That explains a lot..

donn ·

Dude it's just a con, good on ya Rose, stick it up em, I'm off to check mine now and I'll be that little bit more vigilant from now on 👍

helbus ·

Multinational corporation conglomerates. Hmmmm.

I read all labels and prefer to look for
Australian made
Australian owned
Organic
Non processed
It is very interesting to read the labels.

bajachris88 ·

I used to work in an import fruit and vege processing centre. Amazing how much came from overseas of all sorts...

including the classic garlic from china,
oranges from US,
even kiwi fruit from asia, and stone fruit.

Grandad back on the banana plantation (back in the day as a kid) used to always complain about the overseas produce getting the preference over aussie stuff. Often it wasn't advertised in an obvious manner that it was from overseas, but moreso the overseas fruit/vege always looked more presentable compared to australian produce in general due to the Australian produce having to grow in far more harsh climate, attributing to typical scratches or marks on the outter skin from rain, storms, hail, wind etc . Which naturally doesn't affect the produce contents quality, but the presentation.

I guess a hot chick in a fat man suit isn't as nice as a hot chick in a bakini... kinda follows the same principle.

crazyfiggi ·

Try Cedel toothpaste. It only comes in one flavour and doesn't have useless gimmicks like colgate but its Australian made and owned and works just fine. I buy mine at Coles but I'm sure woolworths would also stock it. You might have to search the shelves for it tho, I know at Coles they put it way down low on the bottom where it's barely visible.
Alex.

HappyDaze ·

If you are serious about buying Australian, you have to be wide awake. The lengths some importers go to to deceive is amazing, and not just in the food line.

Years ago, when I was making my Mac-Rac bike carriers, there was an almost identical copy [made in Taiwan] around. It even had the 'Australian Made' sticker like mine!

Be vigilant, like Rose.👍

whathaveidone ·

Just another reason i dont shop at coles or woolies.
We allways go to inderpendent fruit, butchers and fish shops. May take a little longer and be a bit of a pain but we feel better helping the little guy. For other stuff we go o aldi. Not aussie but way better option than the big 2.

Yogie ·

I found the same thing. Tasted like crap and I took it back for a refund. The only reason they would do that is to cut out the profit of the Australian manufacturer yet the price on the shelf is the same as the Australian made toothpaste. End result, more profit for Woolworths and less for Colgate Australia and if it continues like that, Colgate will decide it is not profitable to make anything here and start importing everything.

I am with Bob Katter and his stand to break up the Coles/Woolworths dominance of our shopping.

Most politicians only TALK about this problem. Dick Smith is actually DOING SOMETHING about it.........or is he?

Tried to buy Aussie-made work boots, and after a search [I still buy most stuff at the 'shops'] I found some......"Mongrel" - and they are good.👍

Camo ·

Doesn't surprise me, I saw a show about a similar thing but the product was "COKE" (the drink) and there were different ingrediants for the OS mob. But they could buy it cheaper so they started bringing that shit into the country.

As I think we all know, our country has gone down the gurgler and I feel it is only going to get worse.

So much stuff is outsourced these days, nothing seems to come from it's original country of origin anymore.

I'm looking around at new VWs at the moment and it's surprising how many come from Mexico and South Africa.

Similarly A mate took delivery of his new Nissan Navara a few weeks ago and I was surprised to see it's manufactured in Spain, luckily mine came from it's correct motherland in Japan 😂

Dick Smith makes me laugh!buy Australian he says..... How did he make his millions???that's right selling cheap made overseas electronics then sell out to a big conglomerate!

vwo60 ·

The world economy at work, Dick Smith produces a book that lists all the australian made product available at the super market.

donn ·

Yep "dude" it's not just toothpaste

I thought Blundstones moved to Thailand?

matberry ·

My last set of Blundstones were shit, fell apart quicksmart.

vw54 ·

Blundstones mooved to CHINA about 3 years ago

pod ·

yep blunnies are imports now ,and yes i have mongrels ,nice and comfy😵

HappyDaze ·

My Mongrels have zips on the sides, making them easy to get on and off.....ideal for an old codger.😁

h ·

blunnies made in chinka land huh
wtf then??
just had a look at their site n only the gumboots are still made here
god dammit 👎
well I have 4 more new pairs awaiting wearing, so in about 10 years I'll get some Aussie ones..

However a lot of 'authentic' german made VW parts and 'Italian made' webbers sold in this country by 'apparent' reputable resellers (no names) are made in china..
that's a fact 😬

ian.mezz ·

bath room products.
just checked my Colgate Palmolive Gold soap.
don't know if it used to be made in Oz, but now it comes from Thailand. 😂

h ·

Most Colgate goodies you put in your mouth come from Thailand
just hope it is not from the pat pong road market.. 👎

h ·

matberry wrote:My last set of Blundstones were shit, fell apart quicksmart.
yeah well I'm not surprised as they were your back brakes aka flintstones style 😂

AA003 ·

Blundstone blamed labour costs for moving to Asia.

They need to have a good look in the mirror at their management. Nothing but a pack of halfwits. Good product but very hard to buy if it is not in store. It's a bigger lucky dip than ordering from Tooley's!

I tried many times to buy Blundstones and then gave up. It's a shame as they were quality boots when made in Tasmania.

Hold on I thought that this was about Australian made!

donn ·

Well it started off to be about toothpaste

I have a pair of MSA boots from 07, still in good condition and I wear them every day since I got them, I don't have any other pairs of shoes as they all fell apart, not these boots though.

In the depths of Melbourne winter I don my Austrian hiking boots which I was given in 1965 (still in pristine condition), so you have 42 years to go before you can claim boot-longevity. In England, you can buy toothpaste from Boots, so this thread is still on track, like a good pair of boots.

Normally all this cheap toothpaste, dish washing detergent, cleaning products, chocolates, shampoo and soaps etc were only sold in the cheap shops like Go Lo [now crazy clarks] etc and the Reject Shop ..

Its normally easy to tell as the instructions are in different languages...

and many of these shops have signs explaining about these parallel imports...
which are the same looking as You see on the shelves in Coles and Woolies..
but these now have many languages printed on them..
so, they are easy to see...
plus they are under half the price of woolies and coles etc.
Colgate is about $2 a tube.. lol

and where they used to be like that toothpaste that Rose bought, they now have many languages in LARGE print, so its easy to see..

I haven't tried toothpaste from overseas, but the dish washing liquid doesn't even foam up... lol

I have tried many of the items made in European countries
but tend to stay away from asian made stuff.. regardless of the brand name... lol
Sensodyne toothpaste is made in Australia , years ago it was imported from the UK..

I did buy some well known cleaning spray recently that was actually made in England.. and at half the price of woolies coles ... items that are made in Australia.. ??

I do look at every item I buy to see where it is made...

Home brand band aids used to be made in the USA... lol
now made in thailand etc..

also check that the bottled water you buy is from Australia..
have seen bottled in thailand or indonesia etc.. on some.. lol

Rose may have to buy up a supply of colgate toothpaste from chemist shops... made in Australia... before it runs out..

I have noticed that virtually ALL fruit and vegetables at the local woolworths has Grown in Australia Signs..
it still has signs where nuts etc are grown..
plus anything else grown overseas..

Woolworths milk has finally had printed on it where it came from... NSW.. etc.. it was rumoured to come from Victoria.

LEE

HappyDaze ·

Oh no, Lee, not imported milk!🙄

Saw Colgate toothpaste at ALDI yesterday...

New Double pack.. [under $5] but NOT made in Australia..
it doesn't actually say on the tube where it is made.
ONLY on the packet THAILAND

I'm sure ALDI didn't know this before...
they like to have the best tasting products , if they can't make it they sell the original brands..

OK.. I'm on the look out now for Aussie Colgate.. lol

Parallel Imports --
Although looking like the original sold in Australia product these are NOT backed by the Australian Company who sell the Australian made product...

the imported product is NOT a parallel product once its NO longer made in Australia..

LEE

Governor ·

So an advert on TV the other night saying Australian Paradontax toothpaste so after reading this thread I went and looked at it whilst doing the shopping , yes its made in Thailand !

68AutoBug ·

all the colgate toothpaste I've been able to find was made in THAILAND..

also COKE made in POLAND.. at the reject shop

and at crazy clarks .. looks like its from thailand too...
the fine print was just too fine... lol

Many cheap items at ALDI are actually made in Germany..
now that can't be bad..

looks like many items We take for granted [made in Australia] are now being sourced overseas...

Coke made in Poland? hooray!

ArtyP ·

And has anyone noticed how many food items are labeled made in New Zealand I used to buy them untill I found out NZ can import this stuff from China and re label it made in NZ and as far as I know Canada does too so I dont buy anything from Canada ,NZ or China Arty

PAZZAN ·

oh no, we all better buy holdens & fords

I don't brush my teeth anymore. It's just not worth risking my health!😁

A good portion of their parts are made in European countries such as Poland, Holland, Spain, Hungry etc... Some from the US too, Canada etc.

This is mainly true for holden, Not entirely sure about Ford though

Still, both have Aussie made bits inducing the bodies for their flagship models.

Luckily I haven't seen any Chinese parts...............................Yet.

Dick Smith is taking master foods to court as they have their tomato sauce labelled in Large Letters
Tomatoes grown in Australia
and the Australian flag on the label
on the back fine print says that ingredients are locally sourced or imported .. plus masterfoods is a US company...

Lee

PS: I would rather drink Polish made Coke than that from Vietnam Thailand etc..
but as parallel imports - they have no ties at all to Aussie made Coke... and can taste different..??

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Dick Smith make all his money from selling cheap electrical goods/parts made overseas and didn't that cause all the small electrical businesses to close down because they couldn't compete with his prices, exactly the same thing Harvey Norman is doing now??

68AutoBug ·

Yes Dick did buy all His electronic bits from overseas
and the little shops all went bust...

but His prices were LOW and He employed Australians...

which is a good thing... He didn't pack things over seas...

Now its all gone and the only place to buy Resistors and capacitors etc locally now [about 80 klms away] is Jaycar ..

Dick Smiths is now just another Harvey Norman....
and still owned by woolworths as far as I know...

LEE

68AutoBug ·

also a BIG difference.. is..

Grown in ... Packed in... Packed by... Imported by...

so, packed by grocery wholesalers at Ultimo NSW warehouse
means they could have come from anywhere...

Biggest problem is - once the factory is closed and the machinery is sold... its only a building...
and takes a lot of money to get it running again....
knowing that the items can be bought cheaper from china or India etc.

Doing a clean up and had to throw my old work boots out, at least 10 years old and been through building sites, backpacking through Kakadu and the Kimberly and a sheet load more abuse, so I did a Google, surprise surprise.....................

Redback Boots are 100% Australian made and owned. The Cloros family who operate the business are 4th Generation boot makers. Family members work hands on in the factory every day, to ensure the highest standard of production quality.

from their web site this morning.👍

Woolworths sold Dick Smith Electronics to a private equity firm last year and are in the process of handover at present.

carbonmonoxide ·

At risk of being beaten over the head in here, I work for one of the big two.

I have worked there for 24 years. I work at a reasonably senior level and get to see a bit about the emerging market and how we are going to respond.

The big two only started all this cheap overseas sourcing when Aldi announced they were entering the Australian Market. Aldi are bigger than both Coles and Woolworths. Aldi's competition model of having no service, restricted range , manufactured anywhere and sold at very low prices was a shock to the Aussie retailers.

They decided it was sink or swim. They decided to match Aldi so they didn't lose the bottom demographic in the grocery industry. Remember Bi-lo? It was closed down when Aldi came over here as it was no longer viable for Coles to operate.

Costco has put further pressure on prices here. It also doesn't help when ACA or Today tonight have Coles and Woolies bashing segments every second night but never Aldi. Aldi has an official policy of NOT speaking to the media.

The simple fact is that 80% of shoppers will buy a cheaper item if it is of similar quality no matter where it is made! The only way the Australian food manufacturing industry can be saved is if people are willing to spend the extra 20c per can of Tomatoes to buy Australian grown, made, owned. I always read the labels for where my food is from and always try and buy Australian made and preferably owned.

Coles and Woolworths are primarily Australian owned companies with major shareholdings by most of our Superannuation portfolios. You probably own part of them from your super!

There is something seriously wrong with the world when Aldi can make food in Germany and ship it to sell cheaper than an Aussie alternative. The most amazing thing I have seen is Ice cream made in SPAIN!! See if you can work out which one that is next time you shop. It's out there.
