Hahahahahaa.... Funny guy.
Doug Sweetman ·
So 2442cc then, nice 🙂
Have you seen the four inch bore motors ?
westi ·
Nah . I haven't seen them but I have been told.
I thought about doing this years ago with Siamese barrels .but it was one off those things you never have time to finish off. I got all the drawing done for the maching side of things . But there is always something to do around here.
Do you know the link, or have any pics.
I'd like to see how they got around the oil galleries.
humpty ·
Hot VW's did a feature on it recently.
Doug Sweetman ·
Volks World November 2012 did an article on it too.
They weld a piece of aly barstock down the oil gallery under the cooler, which is the exposed and partially removed when fly cutting for the 101.6mm barrels. New head stud locations too, obviously.
The biggest problem with the 4" bore is the lack of matterial between each bore. It gets quite thin. I have checked it out and the process becomes very involved with machining and ali welding, special heads and the cost becomes the sames as doing a big cc Type 4 engine which is more managable for most people.
fish26 ·
Wow guys awesome work as always. I agree with the above post if you want 3000cc may as well use type 4, you can build it pretty much off the shelf, it will be slightly more expensive though.

Yep this monkey was out on the TRACK testing a car under it's own power, keep at it you'll get there LOL 😵
dangerous ·
Any progress reports guys?
westi ·
not realy dave, the big push starts tommorrow.
had customer cars to do last week.
i had lost a week due to no rod bearings available.needed +.001's.finally got some but now,but i need to turn them down to fit.lucky me.
so it's been slow.finally got my trigger wheel for the crank as well,so need to machine that to fit and make a bracket for that as well.
then its just battery mount ,wire and install, fingers crossed.
fitted all the unabtainium bolts today.wow what a difference in weight.
haven't got everthing as lightweight as i wanted, but close enough for now.
we have a big week ahead, but it should be ok.
dangerous ·
For narrowing rod bearings,
I turn up a slug to about 2.004" diameter
with a shoulder.
Length about 2mm less than the width you need.
You leave it set in the lathe and hose clamp the shells tight
to turn them carefully.
Being a little less in width
gives you room to chamfer the edge to clear the radii of the crank.
I do mine at about 30 degrees.
westi ·
i used a 2.000 and wrapped it with tape, but yeh same idea.
cheers dave.
i used a +.001 shell and a standard shell to get the clearance i needed.
it will do nicely
whathaveidone ·

Don't forget to bring ya pink shirt mate.
And guys thanks for the nice comments.
I am catching up on some sleep at the moment.
So I'll get the dynoing done this week and keep u posted.
Man I never thought my pillow would feel so good.

Engine looks great. The TF1 case has a lot to answer for. I built an engine with one years ago in the USA. didnt like the measurements i was getting on the mains. And its heavy as shit.
Stanley ·
How good do they look without the fan housing....awesome stuff Westi and crew.
westi ·
I wouldn't recommend one to anyone.
Stick to the bubble top cb . Cheap easy and no hassles.
But when you need a big cam to spin without hitting the crank I quess there isn't to many choices.
So it will do.
It's not as heavy as the bubble top.
Well see how she goes .
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Nice work kids!! Get some rest and freshen up for some dyno sessions!! Cant wait to hear this thing in anger!! (the car not you Brad LOL)
humpty ·
Great to catch up on the weekend Brad... The car sounded awesome!.... I'm sure once you have a little time with the beast, hunting down the minor gremlins, this thing will be an animal.
Also good to catch up with Henry and Troy at the shop.... Always great to chat to those guys.
PS:.... Cheers for the very tasty beers!😀
westi ·
everyone is welcome at my shop humpty even the westerners.hopefully everyone knows that.
and yes it was good to catch up and talk shit.i love a good yarn.
we should keep that in mind when events come up,do a shop hop like they do in the states.
anyone is welcome to drop in and have a look,
haven't touch the shitter this week, had to buy a few oil line adapters and stuff to get the oil pressure down.oil pressure was alittle to high.
all sorted now though, well nearly anyway.
hopefully get it on the dyno this weekend if all goes well.
we are going to do some test's at different rpm to see how much oil is needed at different rpm.and also see how long it takes for the oil to get back down to the sump pick up.
sounds technical,but not realy.
a bucket of oil with the litres marked on the side and a hose that runs from the pick up into the engine.
should be interesting.if the fatman shows up,i'll get him to take some picks.
westi ·
Well no Fatman , so no pic's.
Maybe this week
mike64 ·
How's it going mate? Did you get it on the dino?
westi ·
nah.
fucked a tig.and am hard at catching up with only 1.

maybe this week end.

first pull was 179hp 4400rpm.wow.but we have run out off fuel,so we will have to wait until tommorrow,we used up to much fuel trying to work out the dyno.

maybe it's been set in orange county shetlins, not real ponies,we are still learning the new dyno.
we are getting more fuel now and should if all goes well be back on the dyno tonight.
if the fatman shows up, we can take a vid or pic and post it up.
i can only take a pic off the dyno screen , i havent worked out how to print yet.hehehe.
thank god for help screens.

dave your car on the slide calculator say's you have more hp than your dyno sheet say's.
1800 pounds 280hp10.83 @125.8.
dangerous ·
Dyna pac's do read more than dyno dynamics that i have seen.
Dyna pac better for selling parts.
The slide calculator is actually closer to FW power on a SF engine Dyno.
Mine was 1785.7lbs when it ran 126.1mph in Sydney.
With 125mph t Willowbank had 235 wheel.
(Now fatter at say 1815 lbs).
It has now, 259 wheel, so looking forward to a skid this Saturday if weather is fine!

its actually 182 at 48to 5100rpm ,after that no good.miss fire.
played all night and my head is sore.peice of shit .i can get power and torque to get better and better down low.so 3500 rpm to 5000.
after that we have a miss.5100 and over.it seems to get worse the hotter it gets.
what gaps you running on the plugs dave.

Sides ·
Bugger - sensors can be such a PITA at times.
Losing signal completely, not keeping up, or getting erratic ???
Erratic most likely noise... losing completely or lagging more like gap or sensor just not able to go high enough freq.
A GT101 should be more than up to it, but I wouldn't trust a VR style as a paperweight...
Doug Sweetman ·
Gotta love the way you racers share info and help each other out with troubleshooting, warms the cockles to see 🙂
Looking forward to seeing a vid !!!
westi ·
yeh its a 101. with 60thou gap.
i had a friend have the same problem with a 101 ,so i have got another sensor just in case.it's a billet sensor that a few people i have spoken to swear buy them,so i have a back up.
but i found that the globe fell out of the alternator warning light,so no charging when that happens.proberly just a voltage drop, fingers crossed
Sides ·
Yeah, 60 basically spot on for a GT101.
I just run the little plastic ones, and while I keep a spare all pre-wired have found they're pretty much unkillable... save for if they contact the target or something dopey like that.
Pisses me off a little since Honeywell are a competitor... and while ours is better it ain't 5 times the price better for most uses... but them's just the breaks I guess !!!
But yeah - voltage drop could easily explain it !!!
westi ·
Well no news is always good and bad.
I pulled the engine out cause I didn't like the look of the oil.
And nothing to report really it looked great part from the cam bearing . Which told me I was alittle lazy with the shitty cam gear file as it did mesh real good. So I polished it and it is now awsome.
I could have left it but I am glad I didn't .
I had it out and stripped and cleaned ready to assemble in 2 1/2 hours .
So back together Monday / Tuesday . And then back on the dyno for some more punishment.
I'll keep u posted.

my car used to weight 1410 with everything.
i don't know what it is now, could be heavier for all i know, but it is unlikely.
ti bolts ,exhaust and i cut out abit when i put the tinware in.but the new engine is heavy and i added new bars to the front and wheelie bars.so time will tell.
i was hoping for 1300lb but it might be a pipe dream.
i am about to load up ,so see you guys soon.

Pretty sure Pauter has some of their new style rockers in stock now.
Also if you get stuck, I am sure the Pro Series Autocraft steel rockers will fit on your shaft,
just not sure about the stem location on your style heads.
You can put a smaller rocker on the exhaust.

dave i think i will mod the heads to suit jesel or something else of the shelf that is abit stiffer.
but for now i am searching ebay and shit for spares so i can keep running for now.

This is pretty close: (just a guess at 1350 to 1400lbs)
Actually no it is not, I was looking at the FW number.
Matches mine pretty close though from Jambo.
westi ·
god knows power and weight wise, time will tell.
i am only reving it to 7000,trying to save rockers.so there will be more to come.
and i couldn't warm the car up properly, the line locker wasn't working, usually i can hold it in the burnout until the temps get to where i am happy.then give it the beans, lol.
on one of my races i didn't warm the car up properly,so i raced with less than usual.you can feel the difference.
i know this from the dyno runs, at the right head temp there is a sweet spot for the power.
over you don't lose more than 10 but under and you can drop 15-25 ponies.
so power is hard to guess what i am running with at the moment.temps where good on the back to back run's with waldron, the temps were perfect.
thats when i got the 103.8.
next wednesday we will know.
yippe i cant wait.

well a great evening was had by all, drive and spectators.
maybe should have scaled the car and got a wheel alignment ,cause it was alittle hairy tonight.
but fun all the same.
straight of the trailer 10.56 @113.36
it was sitting on the limiter before 1000ft mark.i knew i forgot to do something,oh,and to top that off i hit the limiter in all four gears just to make sure it worked.lol.it does.

3rd 1.525 6.572 105.76 10.61 105.19 back off before 1000ft very loose,very very very.
4th 1.441 9.0 just rolled through got really out of shape after the 60ft.

Not that I don't like wings.
I love them.
But it's like an asshole , everyone has one.and they all look the same.
It feels more like monkey see monkey do.
I would love to go more down the aero road, but we have always had to many other things to chase.
I guess now I have some free time.
Now I just need a smoke machine and a wind tunnel. Hehehehehe.
I have always liked the golf and m3 shark fins .cntre of the roof.
It's an arial and aero.
Or even the Evo has a few off them.
So maybe something like that to start.
We will see

maybe one of those germanlook type rear wings out of plexy? Remelle?

Maybe don't worry about a wing, fold up a slide out tray for under your seat ( like in the bottom of a bird cage ) to catch the shit next time you have a look around up the top end, n it would give Stocko something else to clean out 😂

dangerous wrote:Hmm, no wing hey.
Perhaps an inconspicuous one from clear lexan,
or have a look at Greg Mackie's one on the 'other' black car.
Cool pics.
Yeh Dave something small .
it's not a big wing or a box .so yeh something different .
humpty ·
The Kafer Cup guys swear by that sort of aero.
westi ·
If it works . Why not.
I'll give it a go .

Ive been thinking along these lines too Brad.... Not a fan of the conventional big arse wings that the drag guys run.... I want to run an engine cover too... Same as your car actually.... I have one of those engine covers for my car too.

Do a search on eBay for vw beetle roof spoiler, its for the new beetle but comes flat and is flexible,so we can put them on our roof above the window...that's what I'm going to run on my race bug...

i cant remember where i read it but it was on another forum of a dude making the perspex wing that fits to the roof just above the rear window he even gave the measurements.
cnfabo ·
I just shot them a email to actually see if it comes flat and flexible...I'll let you know...

The Remmele motorsport ones are the type I was referring too.... Still no data to support its effectiveness.
westi ·
i liked the rubber one till i saw the perspex one.
i think we have a winner, just gota give it some westside loven.
thanks guys keep the pics coming,i havent made it yet.lol
Stanley ·
Anything that breaks up the air flow over the back should work...it will just depend on its effectiveness.
Having it up on the roof will do the job but will also create drag. Wings on the deck lid tend to create less drag as the airflow (boundary layer) has or is in the process of seperating from the body.

Beetle aerodynamics....

Love it.
Keep them coming.
It's all good homework for me.

Tyres are on and ready to go.
Just need to pull my finger out and get a wheel alignment .
And if it's not to much of a rush ,maybe a new wing.
And fingers crossed a some more pb's soon there after.
I'll post up some pics if I make a wing.
Anyone else going out soon.
westi ·
Has anyone seen a mph difference in doing flaps on the guards.
Or a handling improvement .
I was thinking some speed holes in the front guards and some flaps at the rear.
But I think they look ugly , so I am not real keen on the idea.,
But if it works , I'll give it a go.
dangerous ·
Front flaps are the best ones.
But they will only slow you down.
1916baja ·
🙅
humpty ·
Hahahaha.... Funny fooka!
Like you, I'm not a fan those 'speed holes' in the rear part of the front and rear guards....Have been looking at some form of air flow management on the guards myself Brad... Have you noticed that many of the glass frontends have 'dam' like structures behind the front wheels?... Obviously this is to limited the amount of air that is caught in the rear sectio of the guard... As my car runs steel guards I have been thinking of making a plastic (ABS) panels to fit in that location.... Another idea was to make a funnel like structure from the rear part of the front guard, into in the inner quarter panel section and out through a suitable duct.
For the rear I was thinking about fitting a modified set of stock tail lights.... Gut them and the section of gaurd they bolt too, then bore some large holes in the lens.... Whould this allow enough air to pass through?... Dunno... Prolly not as much as fake 'flapper' tail lights, but I reckon they would look way better.
SuperOwen ·
Instead of flaps and holes to let the air out maybe stop it going under in the first place? Never been a fan of those Wik style front ends but apparently they work, the chin spoilers the german look guys use likewise. Maybe fab up an air dam that mounts just behind the nose so its a bit inconspicuous.
turboboy ·
Have a look at images in Google under, Car underbody aerodynamics. there are some interesting things there.
Many be some sheeting to redue air movment around wheel arch. like a belly pan
westi ·
I would love to put some under body sheet in , but that's only Gona make it heavier.
Maybe when the car goes on it's next diet I will do it then.
I would love to put dents like a golf ball has in some sheet and go the hole length of the car underneath .
But being a pan car , it doesn't seam like it will be worth it.
Maybe when I get serious and build a tube car, but while it's a pan car . I guess it can just stay as is for now .
Maybe just a weird wing will do for now.
Dak-A-Tak ·
What speed does all this aero stuff start to work , opps the run is over . I think the drag wing is about keeping our cars straight , not so much down force on top of wing , thats why most have large side plates . Any way Brad ! a wing will be a good work bench or a place to put your smoke's .🙄
westi ·
Or beers.
A wing is just another thing for stoko to scratch or clean.
Which ever comes first .lol
This was the 10.65@ 113 .
Sorry it took so long .
I didn't know how to do the go pro editing thing.
I do now.

Cool, a bit fookn skatey in the deep end. 🙂

Loosy goosey 👍
westi ·
Yeh loosy goosy.
What a ride.
Paints where in need of a change.
All my passes were pretty much the same.
That was the worst one and the only footage we got.so I thought I'd share it.
It's the what not to do off drag racing.
Measure roll out.
And get a wheel alignment.
This time we are ready to rumble.
Fingers crossed.lol
Stanley ·
Sounds strong too....will certainly be a rocket when it goes straight....well done boys
westi ·
We are hoping for some PB'S on the weekend.
So we will keep you posted.
Should be fun running all the v8 boys.
Hopefully make them have to work hard for the win.
dangerous ·
Where were the wheels pointing, and were your roll outs the same?
westi ·
left.
then right.
then lefty righty.lol
the wheel roll out was 20mm.smaller on the left rear.
steering was ok rear was toe out.
why dave whats your thoughts.r u thinking ugly wing(yuk),cause i ain't.not yet.(fingers crossed)
if you watch the vid.i hit forth and the little dipper in the track all at the same time.
there is a mad dip in the right lane. i hit it every run, changing early doesnt make it heaps better.but any change is a good one i guess.
bring on sunday.
woooohooo.
dangerous ·
Rear toe out is ugly!
Probably be sweet now, especially on a good track,
and make sure your tyres are warm!
I like the idea of minimal wing if you can get away with it.
Make sure live updates Sunday are on the texts!
westi ·
I think the Fatman is capable of doing that.
Well I hope so.
Should be a good weekend.
Does anyone know who else is going.
Hopefully get that 1.3 sixty foot.
That's my coal for this weekend .

At 1370lbs, 🤪 you should piss that sixty in.

I hope u r right.
We might have a new record if all the planets are aligned.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hi , Brad how did you fix the rollout problem ? Does the front end go up and down freely , to ride through the bumps . Does it pull on steering while doing this , then you may start steering left to right as you go through the bumps . Then the rear is waving around . food for thought .
No ANDRA records at that event , a new PB would be great .
westi ·
New tyres Pete .
You can put them in the sun with heaps of pressure in them.
That stretches them.
But they were to small anyway .
So I got some taller ones.
Steering is all good.
It's just a rear end thing.
Well hopefully anyway.
As for the record it doesn't need to be official.
I don't care about certificates .
Just running a number is good enough for me.
Time slips are all I need tiger.
Fingers crossed
humpty ·
Wow that was a squirrely run Brad.... Iron undies on board, or are they too heavy?
dangerous ·
carbon fibre undies.

shit night, not really worth talking about.🥲
first pass almost hit the wall.👎
realized the tie rod arms where lose, did a wheelalignment buy eye,car went straight till half track.then walked around again.👎
tried the other lane for the next pass.hit the bars soo hard and hooked left like i was going through a macka's drive through for a happy meal.😂
added some preload into the left rear, buy eye ,didnt have a ruler or tape measure, thats just not how we roll.lol.this pass was better, but now going for the other wall.😂
in conclusion,we went left 3 times and right twice.
i think its a form of dance move ,just not real sure what its called.
the boys gave me abit of shit as per usuall.but at the end of the day i am not going to junk the junka just yet.allthough i came closer this week than i did last outting.
so i got the scales of a mate and am about check this nigger out,and re-do the wheel alighnment myself.
i have some vid's i can post up ,nothing great but we still had fun.
nice crickets dave.(allen)
🥲🥲
Stanley ·
damn...look forward to the vids though
vassy66T1 ·
You'll get it going straight 👍
20bkombi ·
Good to see you still had fun!!
When's the next outing??
dangerous ·
What's going on Digby?!
Some simple maths for you to ponder:
At 1370lbs,
and if you can make 100 flywheel-hp per litre, (244hp at the FW)
you should run 131.7mph.
That is 7900 rpm with your current gearing.
LOWBUG ·
Ooo I'd like to get the big "H" in on this
westi ·
Sounds about right!
105.7 mph to the half is the best so far.
Still haven't touched the suspension, got plenty of time though.
No rush . It will happen.
Still got a cam change and rockers for the upgrade so we can rev it.
Still some more power to come , but going straight is the first job at hand.
Just need to find some time.
westi ·
better get started on getting the car ready,i hate last minute.thats life.
hopefully see you all in the morning.
