Registrations are now open for Round 1 of the VWMA 2013 drag racing series at Sydney on February 23rd. Entries must be received by VWMA no later than Friday February 15th.
Sydney Dragway have offered the Volksies their own day again this year based on the impressive numbers for the first event. As long as the VW drag racing community in Australia continues to support the series, then events like Sydney and Warwick will stay on the calendar.
Vintage VeeDub Supplies is proud to support the Dash For Cash again in 2013 (see below). Nobody came close last year - maybe this time around someone can top-up their account? Ian and Rose Automotive have also thrown some coin into the pot with $300 for the best RT (see below).
As per last year, gate passes can be collected from me at the track on Friday after 3pm or they will be waiting for you at the gate on Saturday morning. Your gate pass is needed at scrutineering to confirm that you are a paid competitor and will be swapped for an arm band to go racing. It's important then that you visit the VWMA trade stand before scrutineering. The VWMA trade stand will this year be set up behind the scurtineering bays (saves my legs) and all your driver requirements will be located there.
I hope your car preparations are coming along. Due to the commitments of running the event, I'm stepping away from driver duties this year, but the VWMA team will still be fielding a car with Grahame Rumballe driving. Not the dragster yet, but another project car currently under construction in the workshop.
Driver entries and crew must be paid for by Friday 15th February (only two weeks away!!). Information and online entries can be found at www.vwma.net.au
Thats all the entries ive been told about. PM me if you have entered people and ill add you!!
VWMA Editor ·
Hi All,
Less than one week to register for racing and just under two weeks to the day. Registrations close this Friday 15th February so please get them in early if you intend to compete. Please pass the word around to those who may not be on the email list or forums. The entry list already looks impressive with a number of new cars competing. All the same, I'd like to see the numbers increase by Friday to guarantee the future of the event so don't be shy and/or pull your spanner out and finish the beast!! We've been offered a unique opportunity with Sydney so let's not drop the ball.
Good news for those staying at the track on Friday night - the gates will remain open until 10pm. This will also allow those wishing to cruise to Dino's Pizzas the opportunity to do so. Please do not stretch the friendship beyond this time. Only drivers and registered crew may camp at the track (unless other arrangements have been made directly with me). No vehicles are to be driven at night within the Sydney complex unless entering or exiting the facility. RC drag cars are an exemption. Ensure you have plenty of portable shelter as there is none provided at the track, and power is available at designated poles.
Please also check the website for an update on helmet specs - Snell SA2000 and Snell M2000 are no longer allowed for cars 10.99 seconds or quicker, but I have removed these helmets altogether to avoid any confusion on the day. If you follow these guidelines there should be no need to visit the local store for a new helmet.
I'll have another update at the end of the week and one beginning next week before the event. Best of luck with your preparations (I'm still waiting on my ECU to arrive….).
Yep, thanks Craig, I registered last night, cheers

Come on, now I know for a fact that Matt is still building his engine and he's entered 👍
94 entries last year, 26 this year, and the cut of was tonight the 15th !!!
There are about 10 times as many people read VWMA than are members on AVD,
so I would not worry about entries.
Here are some more names that I am sure are entered:
Henry Spicak
Mark Calus?
Peter Keegan?
Ross Freestone?
Wally Penboss
David O'Connor
Mike Kristen
Rod Penrose
Wayne Penrose's Crew
Peter Page
Darren and Shane Hobson
and plenty more I am sure.
newghia ·
Razor is entered............ But still being put back together & sorted ! 🙄

My list is only an Unofficial list. Only people that PM me are on it. Im sure there will be alot more.
^^AS Craig said, he is to busy to do it, thats why I do mine. You have commented twice about the list not being upto date but i still have no pm from you about your entry???????
that's heaps better Ben....we have a window from 10am til 4pm once the track is dry 🙂

If it rains we should all go over to Custom Bugs and Buses for a dyno Day.
OZ Towdster ·
Gotta say , i won't be making the drive if it dosn't look more promising , will review as the weekend gets closer , and the Rat is ready to go so fingers crossed everybody

Hi All,
Entries have now closed for the Sydney Showdown 2013 and I'm pleased to say there is a healthy field of 83. Last year we had some late entries, so I'm confident we will reach the magic 90 number to keep the show on the calendar. Of course, if you have a valid excuse (eg; my ECU went through the wash and is still drying) then drop me a line and I'll see what I can organise.
What about the weather I hear some web footed entrants ask? If you are a Portland Victorian veteran, you wouldn't be asking, as the weather changed by the minute, but Ray Treasure and myself will do our best to make the show happen or give as early notice as possible if we are certain no racing will occur. That's the best I can offer at the moment.
For the newbies, your tickets, etc will be waiting at the track for you. For those arriving on Friday, please come and see me. For those arriving Saturday, your passes will be at the main gate. Your gate pass is your key to racing, so don't lose it. Also, every driver receives a Volkswagen Genuine Parts goodies bag, and these must be collected from me at the VWMA tent.
Other than that, have a safe journey and I'll see you on the track (maybe - Grahame Rumballe and I did finish the MK1 track car and I may get a chance to drive as long as everyone behaves and has all the right gear...).

SuperOwen wrote:Is there an official policy regarding rain dates etc?
Yes, it's not allowed to rain on drag racing dates.
Too early to call and weather being weather we all know how fickle it can be. At Portland 2010, it poured right up until 9am race morning then changed to heat stroke conditions for the rest of the day.
Sydney race management will discuss options with me on Thursday should things look certain to be damp.
1303Steve ·
Wish it was on today, the weather in Sydney has been a cracker all day
Stanley ·
I hope it all works out for everyones sake especially Craig.....however, everything i'm seeing says rain for Saturday and 50kmh winds.
The rain we're experiencing here in Brissy is heading south. I'll look forward to Craigs decision Thursday.
1916baja ·
I think we'll be waiting to hear from Craig before we leave... We'd planned on leaving Thursday morning. Might wait till a little later!
11CAB ·
Flights are already booked, so we'll be doing something in Sydney this weekend....... Lets hope its VW Drag Racing.....
typethreeking ·
I've got flights booked as well so will find other things to do if all goes pair shaped...lol

I will still be coming down although my car is slow as s$&@. As for being beaten by NSW thats ok, its still a fun time to be had. Safe journey for everyone to the event.
Dasdubber ·
We have our fingers crossed - we're going to wait until Friday morning to leave. I'm guessing Craig will make a call by then. I really hope the weather we have experienced here in SE QLD in the last few days doesn't head south as predicted, this rain has been crazy.
Here's hoping!

Hi
Just heard that the Northern Rivers is going cop a lot of rain, maybe using the New England could avoid it.
Another beautiful day here today, they reckon showers clearing on Saturday.
Sounds good Rose, just need to shorten my neck and lengthen my arms to fit in

Hi....
Shud-dup steve!!!
As soon as you posted that I went and refreshed my weather page.... And watched as tenths of ml's updated to tens of ml's....
Some things should never be said out loud!

Yes???? No????

what are the odds?
vassy66T1 ·
$1.35 off $0.66 on
But then again I don't bet 🤓
Stanley ·
Well after much procrastination I'm out. Every weather report I see is moderate to heavy rain around Penrith at 90% chance. If it was chance of a shower I'd risk it. Needless to say I'm disappointed but shit happens. If it goes ahead good luck to all.
silver ·
i can stop the rain easy, but to do it I need $50 from each racer guaranteed to work..
if it does rain then you don't pay.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Any one heard from Craig H , Sorry but I'm staying home .
Cheers be safe !!
hus22l ·
Not racing (cars not finished) but super keen to come along and support.
So what time are gates open and when are things all kicking off? I couldn't see it on vwma website.

Rumour has it it's still on....

Penrith & eastern creek are far enough apart to not share the same weather.....I work in Penrith & live closer to the creek, sometimes it rains in one area whilst its fine at the other......I' ll be waiting till Saturday morning to see what happens
matberry ·
Apparently Craig has called it ON. We have the car running and are planning to leave early tomorrow
OZ Towdster ·
Best you head down the new England Matt as Northern NSW is copping a hammering and good luck bud
essex ·
Much along the lines of what Stanley has said, was desperate to get up to this event, and have been watching Bens weather link all week, bit I'm dissapointed to say I will not now be going,
Given the weather plenty of chance, with all its toing & froing its always gone back to being a wet weekend forecast.
For the sake of everyone going, the gringos from Vic & all interstate travellers hope the weekend turns out great & be safe.
cheers
Stanley ·
Eastern creek weather is the same. I've made my decision based on finances. I hope for all the other races i've made the wrong choice. Best of luck to all. On a brighter note it makes me available for Sydney Jambo. Engine change here we go.
vassy66T1 ·
No actual announcement/communication ???????
karmann141 ·
Is it On or is it Off??? I must say its a pretty piss poor effort on behalf of the organisers of this event considering the distance people have to travel to support this event.
Make a call and let everyone know - not just keep everyone guessing.
newghia ·
Read above your posts,
states that Craig has made the call that it's ON,
I believe entrants would have received an email if it was off, nothing in my inbox , so I think it's still on,
Weather at my place, 5 mins from the creek looks to be clearing right now.
karmann141 ·
What about spectators? I haven't seen or heard anything official! Apparently it's on isn't quite good enough to travel a 2000 + km round trip.
newghia ·
Send Craig an email
Still, nobody can predict the weather accurately , tomorrow might be a great day, could be ordinary too.
vw54 ·
still on

Still on with 60 ml forecast .... Must have good dryers out at WSID

You will owe me $50 if the rain stops, then, 'cause I have cancelled the rain.

Okay so I just did the 25 km trip home from work on the highway and it's torn to shreds
When the mobile billboards are flashing " STAY AWAY, highway closed numerous places" it's pretty worrying. On that short stretch there are 6 trees that fell completely across the road and dozens blocking the whole lane on either side, countless limbs big enough to stop you on the spot and a couple complete with cars buried under them.
Glad no one is traveling now or facing the haul tomorrow evening or Sunday, new England will be the only option for returning north for those that went early
Hopefully another date is set and if not, I'm happy to donate my entry fee to Craig and WSID if it means the event can be booked again and return next year.... For sure the price of traveling thru this weather could be very costly indeed.
Ps I kinda hope it does piss down at the creek tomorrow now it's been canned on that basis
Been raining constantly here ( 5 mins from the creek ) for a few hours now....... BBQ still on !
vwpizza ·
I bet rain has never sounded so good to a certain person this morning, good morning Craig.....😂
11CAB ·
Miserable and wet just south of Newcastle where we are staying too
sauron ·
Got 50 klms north of Gundagai before getting a phone call that it had been cancelled, so turned around and headed back to sunny Melbourne. 1,100 klm round trip, was absolutely stuffed when I got home. That's racing!

Wow, glad we were running late and turned around before we reached that carnage......
As stated, above, quietly very happy the forecast was right for today.
