WPVW Dean's preparation for Sydney VW Drags

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/100743/wpvw-deans-preparation-for-sydney-vw-drags

vw_dude ·

A few days ago I removed my right inlet manifold to fix an air leak between the manifold and the head. Once I had the weber linkage undone I decided that I may aswell put a turbo on it now. 😂

vw_dude ·

My girlfriend Celeste begins by removing the air cleaners, weber linkages, fuel lines, throttle return springs, and gets her hands dirty for the first time.

The Webers have now been removed, along with the breather box, coil, and engine lid hinges, so there is more room to manufacture the turbo system

vw_dude ·

The cause of the air leak has been found with a split inlet manifold gasket.
2 new gaskets were manufactured and the inlet manifold refitted.
I will be using a Garrett roller bearing T4 turbo for this conversion.

vw_dude ·

I will be using a Turbosmart Hypergate 45mm wastegate for boost control.
The intake plumbing from the plenums is being manufactured.

vw_dude ·

The pluming from the turbo to the intake manifolds is now complete and the turbo clamped in place

vw_dude ·

The holley manifold is dummy fitted to the turbo. I will be using a Holley 750 double pumper with this turbo

1916baja ·

Awesome! Where did you get those plenums/ manifold?? Does Wayne stock them or did you make them?

ian.mezz ·

rose got one of those toooo
did you get yours off eBay as well 😊
.

vw_dude ·

The plenums were manufactured by WPVW. Yea got the carby from ebay Ian. Its a methanol holley.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

How much boost and what fuel are you planning on running Dean? What comp are you running ATM? I'm guessing some mods to the bootlid are in order lol

vw_dude ·

Yes I think some bootlid modifications are definitely in order 😂 it currently has 10.1:1 compression and I have been using unleaded fuel as this car is my daily driver. I still want to keep it street legal so I will be switching to e85. Not too sure on the boost yet. The turbosmart wastegate comes with a 7psi spring so I'll see how that goes.

vw_dude ·

And the thing that determines the boost is how scared I am when I hit the throttle 😂

Doug Sweetman ·

Umm yeah I'd start at 7 psi.... That t4 of yours hold be capable of plenty more though.

Wish we could get e85 over her in wa

Smiley ·

Wow. Looks like this is going to be an even wilder car!!

I'm guessing it's no longer going to be your daily if you're going to E85??

Smiley 🙂

vw_dude ·

Not every day but still quite regularly. The closest e85 servo is about 1 hour from me

dragvw2180 ·

This is only a suggestion but I would rethink the 10:1 compression , I would start around 8.2 . Car is beautiful. When my wife Sue and I were first together she used to help me work on my bug, she actually pulled the engine herself, might better marry yours before she gets away, hahahahha Mike McCarthy

vw_dude ·

Haha thanks mike. Yea I certainly would rethink the compression if I was going to run unleaded fuel. This is part of the reason why I chose to use e85, so I could still keep the high compression with the turbo

13bwagon ·

you maybe a young dude but you still inspire a lot of us old dudes ... keep up the great work !!!

hypo-vw ·

after mounting the turbo to the intake plenum , we manufacture the exhaust outlet from the turbo in 3" mandrel tubing .
The exhaust is fitted with a control valve before the small muffler which will assist in keeping the exhaust note much quieter . When Dean drives his bug on the street on light throttle the valve will be fully closed and the exhaust gasses can only pass around the outside edge of the butterfly , but when he stands on the accelerator pedal the butterfly opens fully allowing maximum exhaust gas flow and the throttle effectively becomes ' The LOUD Pedal '

hypo-vw ·

the outlet of the header is cut-off and turned 180 degrees so that the exhaust feed pipe to the turbo can be fabricated

hypo-vw ·

the exhaust feed pipe to the turbo is fabricated , a nipple is tig-welded to the oil filler tube for the turbo drain pipe and the wastegate plumbing is being fabricated

hypo-vw ·

the turbo oil drain is connected and all the plumbing is finished . All we need to do now is fabricate intake manifold support brackets , fabricate an accelerator cable and then dyno tune when Deans Holley arrives .
Tonight we fitted a spare 850 methanol Holley to Deans bug to do an engine start-up prior to his new carburettor arriving and all sounds great !!
The exhaust note is even quieter than had first suspected it would be ....... Dean is getting very excited now !!

Doug Sweetman ·

Turbos.... The best form of muffler 🙂

humpty ·

Nice work Dean... You got the old man burning the midnight oil.... Well done!
Look forward to seeing the beast roll in a couple of weeks....

hypo-vw ·

today Dean fabricated some brackets to support the intake manifold under the Holley . The upright brace is fabricated from 30x30x3mm aluminum angle and the 2 smaller rear braces are fabricated from 25x3mm aluminum flat-bar .
Dean also fabricated some small steel angle brackets which I welded to the exhaust and the intake plenum for the braces to bolt to . His finished product looks great and works really well to stabilise the Holley

hypo-vw ·

a box of goodies arrive for Dean so that he can install the new fuel system required to keep up with the fuel supply required on the E85 fuel

The entire turbo system is removed , all components are fully welded & the welds are ground back .... then all of the pipes are prepared & painted in 2000deg exhaust paint

hypo-vw ·

Dean starts to reassemble the turbo system on saturday & sunday when I am away in Wagga Wagga

Dean installs new Aeroflow fittings into the fuel pressure regulator & the new 750dp Holley is installed

hypo-vw ·

Dean also installs a Turbosmart dual-stage boost controller so that he can cruise the streets on 7psi boost & then at the flick of a switch the turbo boost will rise to 14psi for a little added power . 😂😂😂

Dean also installs the Holley black fuel pump with Aeroflow fittings

whathaveidone ·

When is the dyno Dean?????

humpty ·

Really looking forward to seeing and hearing about the drivability of that intake system Dean... I'm about to redo the setup on the POS when my stroker goes together, and that kind of setup is what was thinking... Very interested in seeing the results.

hypo-vw ·

tonight we fabricated new braided fuel lines from the regulator to the Holley carb , mounted the Holley carb , removed the fuel tank and welded in a new large dash-10 nipple for the fuel supply , and Dean assembled the rear apron assembly back onto his beetle.....

Tomorrow night we will finish the fuel system , fabricate an accelerator cable , and off to the dyno on Wednesday afternoon.....

hypo-vw ·

Deans bug looks really wild with the detailed turbo system ..... cant wait to see it on the dyno and then on the track 🤪🤪🤪

Doug Sweetman ·

That's one big carb..... Should be fun on the dyno !!!

Super1302 ·

nice work there, should be fun on the weekend.👍

hellbugged ·

WPVW pre event thrash madness at it's best!........love it!

Sheez it was laying down good enough times NA........good stuff!

humpty ·

Engine cover? 😀

whathaveidone ·

No chance!!!!!!!😂😂

humpty ·

whathaveidone wrote:No chance!!!!!!!😂😂
Cut a hole in it!

whathaveidone ·

What!!!! and just leave the outer edge???????🤪

hypo-vw ·

last night Dean and I fabricated & installed the fuel hoses .
We welded in a much larger nipple to his fuel tank to ensure ample fuel supply & also a much larger breather fitting to enable air to get back into the tank when the fuel is pulled

hypo-vw ·

Fuel pressure set .... float levels set
Engine fired and all sounds great !!
On the dyno this afternoon , just need to make an accelerator cable this morning
If all goes well on the dyno , we should get an early night in tonight 😂😂

hypo-vw ·

had a lot of trouble trying to get Deans bug to run smoothly on the E85 fuel as the low-speed galleries in the Holley carburettor a far too large as we have discovered .

So the quick & easy solution for this event was to drain the entire fuel system and set his bug up on methanol .

We had great results his bug on the dyno , producing 256hp @ the wheels on just 8psi boost ....... Dean is ecstatic with the results !!

vw_dude ·

I have decided to take my beetle out to the WSID street meet tomorrow night for a test and tune. The car sounds great and cant wait to see how it goes down the strip.

whathaveidone ·

Good luck!!!!! Are you entering the jamboree????

humpty ·

Take the camera Dean!

awesome work fellas, KISS

hypo-vw ·

humpty wrote:Engine cover? 😀
yes Simon , we did fabricate an engine cover to fit on Deans bug with the big turbo & Holley carb ......

hypo-vw ·

whathaveidone wrote:No chance!!!!!!!😂😂
and Ben, you should know better than to tell WPVW that it cant be done . lol . that just makes it all the more easier to accomplish .....😂😂

dangerous ·

Well done gentlemen!
What speed did it run?
Methanol right?
😎

1303Steve ·

Well done, are you going to leave the turbo on for the suoersprint? Now that would be fun

hypo-vw ·

dangerous wrote:Well done gentlemen!

😎
thanks Dave ( and all other well wishes ) , we did run Deans bug on methanol .
The original plan was to run E85 and we set Deans bug up to do this , however the 750dp methanol Holley I purchased was supplying way too much fuel at low speed so we drained the fuel system and changed to methanol to get it ready for the VWMA VW drags .

We then drained the fuel sustem , changed back to E85 and I purchased a 750sq bore vacuum sec Holley petrol carb and proceeded to set that up on E85 . We found that the low speed running was terrible and excessive amounts of fuel were pooling in the turbo at low speed .

We then drained the fuel system again and changed to 98ulp , installed Deans 2 original 48IDF webers on a conversion manifold ( dual weber IDF to Holley pattern ) that I had on the shelf , to find it idles perfectly at 800rpm and was extremely smooth and very responsive with no fuel pooling in the turbo . This now tells me that we just have to get the low speed set-up jetted correctly on E85 . We will try the webers on E85 next week before going back to the holley carb .

We then drained the fuel system again , changed back to methanol and installed the 750dp methanol Holley to run at WSID street-meet Wednesday night 27-03-2013 .

Deans speed at WSID was 123mph ...... he had 3 runs and the slowest was 120mph .....

Craig Torrens ·

Wow.....gotta be happy with that !

hypo-vw ·

1303Steve wrote:Well done, are you going to leave the turbo on for the suoersprint? Now that would be fun
yes Steve, Dean will be running at the supersprint and yes the turbo is staying on his bug . We did not go to all of this work to remove it and have it stored in a box and put onto a shelf .

Dean is off to London on 1st July for 6 weeks training in the A320 airbus simulator . When he returns on 19th August , I may not be able to see him before he hits the skies as a First Officer (co-pilot) for Jetstar ...... so I wanted him to have as much fun as he could before he gets tied up with the massive pressure that he will be under when he resumes his training & career ......

hypo-vw ·

video of Deans turbo bug ...... engine mods , dyno-tune and racing at WSID street-meet 27-03-2013 ...... This video runs for approx. 9mins but good viewing with various camera angles

typethreeking ·

Nice job guys!!

1303Steve ·

Driving a high powered bug is the perfect relaxation for a future First Officer, they should put it in the course lol

Super1302 ·

Well done guys, looks the goods too👍

ian.mezz ·

looked like that you enjoyed yourself, I like the fist punch in the air after one of your racers. was it a close race ??

hypo-vw ·

ian.mezz wrote:looked like that you enjoyed yourself, I like the fist punch in the air after one of your racers. was it a close race ??
Dean enjoyed himself immensly Ian , the fist punch was just a show of shear excitement after many late nights of work on his bug and acheiving outstanding results once again .

The first run Dean left the line on fairly light throttle ( primary barrels only which is quite evident by the air/fuels around 6.2 )and made a pass of 11.77@120mph . In the video you can see the ANDRA official lady walking away from Deans bug as he drives off into the pit area , she grabbed him at the end of the return road and informed him that he went too fast for the event without a super-street licence ( cut-off is 12.0 secs ) . So off to the scrutineering shed and $153 later Dean has a super-street licence and can continue to race .

The second run Dean gave it heaps more leaving the line with the secondary barrels open ( air/fuels now around 5.2 ) and he tells me that it felt like his eyeballs crashed against the back of his skull , shifting through all the gears smoothly he felt that he had made the perfect pass for his bug on the night 11.12@123mph , and the excitement was evident . 👍👍 however , Dean almost made the super-street licence become invalid as the cut-off for it is 11.0secs , any quicker and Dean would have needed an Unlimited licence and also upgrade his bug to Super-sedan specs ........

The third run Dean hammered it from the line , to have his bug break into wheelspin ( even feathering the throttle it would not gain traction ) and he ran a 12.3@120mph

Doug Sweetman ·

Easy tens in that combo, just needs track time. Amazing 🙂

vw_dude ·

I took my girlfriend for a ride in the beetle yesterday and filmed her reactions with the GoPro. She said she thought it was pretty good until i "flicked the switch" (6psi to 8.5psi) and then she was shocked at the power.

Super1302 ·

Good stuff👍

Cool, I like Lukes comment, "I thought fast was fast, but that's faster"....😂

1916baja ·

That's gold! What an awesome car!

1916baja ·

What fuel did you end up getting it to run on??

Aussie ·

I love those vids 😂 Keep them coming.

66deluxe ·

You have inspired me to turbo my type 4 2270. I am sending my Dellorto 45 DRLA's off to be machined into turbo dells and will run a blow through set up.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Woo goo Damo!! Lucky you decided cause wouldn't be good if you got beat by my block of flats!! Lol

Troy might have some bits off the type 3 that might be of use. Call you tonight.

Love the videos dean!! Nothing better than scaring your mates hahahaha

matberry ·

Damo needs a hair drier as he couldn't keep up with a mild type 1 with IDA's
