I'll throw it out to the forum - What is the fastest street registered vw in Australia ?
I understand that there shoudl be two different sections - fastest out right, and fastest aircooled, but throw them all in and we will see where we get.

It could have been Keith Hausler and his killer Turbo 2L motor in that beautiful Oval of his??
I saw him light it up with 4 guys in the car out the front of Hellbug when Hellbug had their opening BBQ.......1st, 2nd, 3rd......those P6000? tyres were not gripping the bituman at all. Never saw it drag the 1/4M however from what I hear a very quick car!
kombiluva ·
Or it could be Jeff Unwin in his T3-Hellslooow! Man is that a car!!!!
1303Steve ·
Hi
Do mean 1/4 mile times?
1302Steve
1303Steve ·
Hi
Club Veedub has had drags at the Nationals for the last 10 years or so and had a the Gene Berg trophy for the fastest street registered VW. What is a street car? This caused no end arguments and sadly cheating buy a well known VW engine builder (put number plates onto drag car), just to get a trophy.
Keiths car was very quick and was definatley a street car. Leighs turbo bug is about as fast as Keiths, Keith is building new one so look out.
1302Steve
vw54 ·
Yeah do you mean our Gene Berg VW Nationals, street rules .... or some pretend ones ???
1/8 or 1/4 mile ???
i think there are only a few legitimate cars around that would pass the scrutineering.
Herbie Down Under ·
I think Dave Birchalls judson super charged 36 horse powered 56 oval is the fastest street car. Talk about feeling the G forces when he plants the foot.:P
56astro ·
Steve C
From what I gather from the cheating episodes, there was cheating, and then there was "cheating" solely to prove a point.
Is this about the crux of it??
1303Steve ·
Hi 56astro
I guess i struck a nerve, the car that had the quickest time was legally registered, it had Lexan windows and no rear seat, it was ready to race in the Targa Tasmania and most importantly it was driven to the track, i dont consider that this car was cheating, the car that was awarded the prize after a hissy fit by the well known VW engine builder which involving him kicking and hitting the Targa car didnt even have a cooling system and I sure that the number plates attached would not have stood up to police scruttiny, all for a trophy, he proved a point all right.
The Gene Berg rules have now been tighened up, I dont have a copy with me at the moment, perhaps Dave can post them. Leigh has won it fare & square for the last 3 years and I think he has beaten the times posted buy all other cars.
1302Steve
70AutoStik ·
It was leagally registered with Lexan windows? I didn't think that was possible (or do you include "special" registrations, such as the hotrod and race car allowances in many states?) As for a car with no cooling system - what idiot would believe that to be a street car (it would also not be legally registered - for a start it would need a working heater for the demister.)
Doug Sweetman ·
Okay, what I meant was 1/4 mile times for a legally street registered vw. So, the blokes race car with number plates bolted on - would not qualify.
However, for the outright fastest, in my mind at least, any registered vw with an engine conversion (ie rotary, ej20t etc etc) would count.
Buggy Boyz ·
I reckon my Manx with big 1500 SP would be good for about a 25 secong 1/4 😎 so that is the fastest posted time so far ..... The Turd would pull say a 28 or so 😀😀
Bugged Again ·
It really depends on how steep the hill or cliff is or if it has to be on the flat.
kombi_kid ·
:jesus so many silly questions for such a straight forward questions.
1/4 mile times by a street registered VW
has there been any kombi's doin the 1/4 under 13 secs?
cheers

1303Steve ·
Hi
Below is a copy of the rules that were devised to try and clear this grey area up and are used at the VW Nationals to help decide the winner. You will never stop a trophy hunter, but with the resourses we have this the best we could come up with. These rules were worked out with the help of Dave Birchall, Geoff "Onion" Unwin & Gene Berg. BTW, Lexan windows are legal in all but the windscreen, but to try and level out the playing field we insist that all window be galss.
1302Steve
Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules
The Gene Berg Trophy is a perpetual award, presented to the driver of the FASTEST ROAD REGISTERED VW. As there may be some confusion over exactly what is a "road registered" car, the following rules have been implemented.
1. The vehicle must be registered. That is the chassis and engine numbers must match up with the registration papers, sticker and plates. This can be checked by the scrutineers.
2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.
3. The best time only in "racing" will be counted.
4. The vehicle must run on pump petrol, for example leaded super, or standard or hi octane unleaded. No exotic chemistry allowed.
5. Street tyres must be run .No drag slicks are allowed. Road tyres must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread.
6. Fitting of the rear seat and rear seat belts is optional but both front seats and belts must be fitted.
7. Fibreglass mudguards, bonnets, whale tails and spoilers are allowed, but the body and doors must be factory steel.
8. No perspex windows are allowed, all windows must be glass.
9. The spare wheel must be fitted for safety reasons.
10. Exhaust design is unlimited except that it must meet the track noise requirements.
11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street in the normal manner. If scrutineers are in any doubt, you may be required to complete a 15 km drive.
last celtic warrior ·
Obviously by those rules, a buggy is not a road registered VW... Not happy Jan...
70AutoStik ·
I seem to recall hearing of such a Kombi back in the early eighties, Rhys - I think it had a supercharged small-block (or maybe someone had too much beer and an overly active imagination!)
On a more serious note: we all know people with "legally registered" cars that have modifications the law doen't know about - maybe we can co-ordinate with the cop drag scene that is running in various states and produce a truly street-legal class?
1303Steve ·
Hi Ben
Every conversation I had with Gene about turbo charging VWs he said that in Australia we are by far ahead of anyone in the US, they are still using suck through webers over there now. He took his hat off to people like Dave Becker, Shimmo & Iain Hall. I didnt get the impression that he was against turbos.
1302Steve
The_Bronze. ·
Hmmmm,
So who was it that had the fastest car?
I must have missed that bit.
Bronze.
56astro ·
I'll stand corrected by anyone who knows exactly what happened ...
Jeff Unwin with a 2.3 L (?)unregisterable "registered" beetle;
Then Stan Pobjoy/Peter Richards in a drag car with plates (to prove a point I think);
Then came the turbo cars of Mike Kristen and others I'm not sure of.
Please, somebody fill in the blanks.
Doug Sweetman ·
Sorry guys, but without times and speeds, how does the rest of Australia, who couldnt attend this event, know who sits where ?
I thought it was a simple question.....:bounce
vw54 ·
All of the above cars are NOT legally registered there full Drag cars.
Doug you will have to expand on exactly what specks you want
Secoh ·
it's pretty simple. what speed were they getting down the quarter mile, and how long did it take to do it?
so....who was the fastest? what times were they doing? I can only assume that by the lack of answers is that no-one was there, or if they were, they took no notice of the actual racing...
56astro ·
I thought the Gene Berg trophy was a perpetual trophy run by ClubVW Sydney, and run at the Nationals.
If so, shouldn't be too hard to find the trophy holder for the past years.
In a "VW Power / Volkswagen Aust" magazine it mentioned that Mike Kristen won the "fastest street registered VW award as well as the coverted Gene Berg award."
Are they 2 different awards?
Keith Haeusler ·
Hi everyone,
Afew years ago i saw a photo of a beetle that was runnuing 11.20`s at 120 and it was wearing the no plates BEETLE. I think it was Victorian. Not sure about rego etc. My old 56 turbo ran 12.1 at 116 last time at Eastern creek on everyday 205 street tyres using full muffler and unleaded fuel. I think the 1/8th mile time was 7.8 to 8.0 at 90mph. This was my only car so it was driven 7 days to week to work etc. It was engineered and insured with shannons. Made many a trip to Nambucca, was hillclimbed at Grafton, Tamworth, even been to Manilla street drags. There is a few nat asp cars running mid to high 12`s in SA and Queensland i hear but not sure who they are. Leigh harris`s turbo bug is also quick but not sure on his times. Humpty in WA has also pulled some good numbers as well but again not sure what. Feel free to correct me if im wrong, just thought i`d get the ball rolling alittle. Have fun, Keith.
vw54 ·
I will try n get the bread board ( berg trophy ) of Leigh n list the times that have been run in the past few years.
Doug Sweetman ·
Humpty hasnt got his 1916 turbo together yet, but AFAIK his best with the 1776 was a 14.8 - Everyone feel free to correct me, I've only met the man 2 or 3 times.
Bizarre ·
A couple of mothe ago "someone" in Adelaide was running low 12's for the 1/4 in a NA 69 Type 1
My basis of this is they were listed on the "Top 20" at cal-look.com
He got nocked out in the next listing - and i never really noticed who it was. Anyone know who i am talking about?
Just looked again and he is back in.
Some one called David O'Conner
He is placed 18th at the moment with a 12.7 @102.56. Hmmm.....not bad.
Anyone know him or is he a poster here?

my VW powered kombi ran 14.6. Was a real street car, semi camper with bed seat n curtains. Pulled 6250 rpm in top gear (if not 200kmh then very close, somebody work it out. 2litre kombi box 205/60 15 tyres) just north of Alice Springs. At that time the quickest HSV was 14.8. Thought that was pretty cool. Hot Vw's did a story on fast street cars at that time too. The fastest VW powered kombi was high 15's!
Also did a few hillclimbs, supersprints and came home with trophies. Used to have a good old battle at huntley with an XY Falcon and an LJ torana. These days the LJ gives us both a whooping though.
Not really scarey at all. Scariest bit was looking at the temp gauge, think it was 230F, and took a long time to come down.
Downloaded the calculator. It says only 180. It was a lot closer when I worked it out with the tyre diameter. even if I am mistaken and they were 65 series tyres its still low.
Pretty sure I worked out 195 at the time. Very disapointed at 180. 🙁

I heard a rumour there is/was a beetle in Brisbane (owned by a fella by the name of Craig), daily driven, that holds the mantle.

Craig's beetle was absolutley immaculate, but I think the fast it ever went was around a 12.6. It was on the cover of an old VW scene magazine.

bit hard to compare with 1/4 mile stuff but hey wait till mid next year when the new track is up n running.

So do you know what the 1/8th mile time was for Leigh?!?

Well you all ask for it, so heres a list of all the winners straight off the Berg Trophy over the past few years, in event order.
Most events were held at Oran Park in Sydney, which in the early days was a distance of 850 feet, which means nothing to anyone.
In or around 1993 I convinced the NSWHRA to reduce the track length to a standard 1/8 mile 660 feet, so as the times would be representative to other tracks around the world.
I have to check my OTHER records as some of these may be adjusted or added to.
I hope you all can calculate your cars performance
In the early years of this trophy the STREET REGISTERED rules were vague to say the least. Jeff Unwin and Mr Berg discussed and determined the rules as such. These have and will be published each year prior to each event.
NO CORRESPONDANCE will be entered into.

There is a guy in Melbourne that has a street car with a US style turbo bug in full street trim that has done a 10.5 I believe!....I think there was a story on the guy in a fast fours mag a couple of years back...I'll see if I can track it down!...
Yeah the REAL turbo engine is still not together. The hatch job did a 13.5 the blew up!....
Dave the Doc on adelaide is quick but I think Dave Prior's bug in adelaide is quicker....And Arron Britcher's Black Squareback Panel is on the road now.....Now that has to be a real contender! He hasn't run it at the drags yet...Maybe next year!
vw54 ·
Yeah ive seen Arrons S/Back i dont think he will wanna drag it, very nice.
10.5 for full street trim I would like to believe that, but perhaps he was dreaming of a time.:alien
jakriz ·
It's actually true Dave, I've got the madazine & i've also seen the video, I think that it was 10.1 @ 140mph!!!
Gotta see it to beleive it!

Thanks for digging up that info on Previous times.
Doug Sweetman ·
10's are believable in an early bodied beetle. BUT - would have to have 500hp or therabouts, indestructible tranny, nice set of slicks, excellent hook up and a large pair of you - know - whats.....
Sad to hear about the engine Humpty... look forward to seeing the new one together.
Any ideas on when the next NoH20 Drag Nite is going to be ?
vw54 ·
Yeah Doug I agree with the early body and horse power etcetc
But from the description you have just written, It does not sound like its a FULL daily driver average street car.
Thats why the Berg Rules were written.
Jak who got the tape on this 10s car ?? i would like to see a copy.
humpty ·
Sofar Leigh has the trophy I guess...Unless someone can track down that guy in Melbourne...Much ezr for you guys on the east coast!
Doug....If you have about 300hp & the right ratios & you know how to drive...you can get into the 10's...I've seen loads of cars do it in the US back in the early 90's when I was living over there!
I reckon another drag night or 2 will happen early in the new year....I won't be racing though...Those heads I bought off Hamo (you remember them Keith?) all those years ago need a tidy up!...The engines coming out in the new year...As soon as the SVX/Transporter is finished!

Are you guys still going on about this. I was here months ago when this started.

I thought it was one of the Muller brothers in their lethal baby blue beetle with a 2110 with IDa's that year, I think they ran a 9.1 or similar?

And 2000 660' 8.6 @ 80.35mph
2001 660' 8.56 @ 74.65mph
0.04 seconds quicker but 5.7mph slower.

Found the letter i wrote on 3rd June 1993 to the NSWHRA re the track length at Sydneys Oran Park.
I wrote a letter to ask them to reduce the track distance for racing from 850 feet to the standard 1/8 mile length of 660 feet.
Of course they did this and we raced a standard distance after this date...

I remember reading a UK vw mag a year or two ago that featured a light blue 1968+ body shaped vw that had a Twin Turbo'd type 4 engine fitted.
The car was radically engineered, and featured porsche 944 brakes all around(the owner was a german machinest).
The car was assembled very light weight, but did have a full roll cage fitted. Estimated weight of about 820-850kg.
I think I remember the article said the car had a maximum power output of approx. 440-480 hp, and that it was impossible to drive when the road was wet.
If there were ever street registered car that could easily break 10 seconds on the 1/4, this was the car.
Of course its not and aussie beetle...

IF Im not mistaken the car was that of Volkomen Art's! I have seen that car and it is bloody awesome! Couldnt tell you times, but its an early with 1500 guards on it! It used to be Black, and now it is black with blue doors! I believe he also has a Scat case for it!!!!!

what time do you think your car will do Jak, I know it is a superbug so a bit slower I guess, but have a stab. My 1916 seemed to hold its own against strokers !!
Considering some were running turbo's

OK , I'll bite, it did 9.8 last year before all the headwork & the ratio rockers, & thats also with an L-bug gearbox. I'm also a girl at leaving the lights, Lets see, I know that u sit at the lights revving the shit out of it & dump it, ( u have to rev the 1916cc to make it work apparently, motorcycle theory & all) u have one of the most trick gearboxes around (so I am told ) u even said yourself that u can't do supersprints with your car since the 4th gear is lower than a stock 3rd gear! & correct me if I'm wrong, isn't your car the Mullers old rally car & it's one of those 76 models with the thinner metal ???
Do u have a stereo , carpet, soundprrofing etc in your car? Lets compare apples with apples Craig. Take a reality pill dude!

I have video which I took in sacremento of a vw boxer powered rail doing a quarter mile pass in 6.91 seconds, I was more than impressed and there were beetles chasing his times with in 2 seconds or so. and some very quick and beefy registerd beetles however californian rego is in no way comparable to Australian standards, if its older than 30 years you just pay your $54 + insurance and youre off.

The Drag Day will be back for the 2004 VW Nationals, at the new proper Eastern Creek Quarter Mile strip. Everyone who is a contender for the 'fastest street-registered VW' title should plan on being there. Then we can settle the issue.

The rules were designed for gentlemen but when someone really wants a trophy and is pissed off about being beaten by a 1880 cc Targa car they will make complaints and bolt number plates to their chubby chums drag car (isn't that fraud), sure it was a stripped down bug. Liable laws restrict me from naming names
Fact, it passed noise restriction, otherwise it would not be racing.
Fact, it was using street legal Yokohamas from memory.
Fact, I didnt know lexan window made that much diffrence, I have done jobbies that weigh more than a window, so i dont see what the big deal is about them being that much of an advantage, Im pretty sure that they are legal in side and rear windows in NSW.
Below are the rules that we were asked to adopt by Gene Berg to make sure there were no more disputes.
5. Street tyres must be run. No drag slicks are allowed.
Cant wait until we have a 1/4 mile track for next years Nationals, would like to see Adam from SA and Leigh go head to head.

Steve, I hear what you're saying, but that drag car (the Flying Flea, am I right?) was as street-legal and as worthy a winner of the "Berg Trophy-with-no-rules" as some other vehicle(s) that ran times that day and would have been given the trophy.
What most people fail to realise or comprehend is that the Berg Trophy should carry a fair degree of prestige. No doubt that the builder of the engine that wins the Berg Trophy gets considerable kudos, and consequently business from their efforts.
However, when the running of such an event by gentlemen is derailed by the unscrupulous and non-gentlemen in an effort to bolster their business at the detriment of others, THAT IS FRAUD!
On the occasion that the lack-of-rules was brought to a head and the drag car won the trophy, was that the same year that the trophy was eventually awarded to a turbo vehicle. Is this what Gene would have really wanted, knowing what Gene Berg Ent. really stood for (fastest normally aspirated street car)?
Like others, I can't wait for next years match ups.

I dont think berg would have any problems with turbo cars winning. The trophy says fastest street registered volkswagen if I'm not mistaken. No mention of normally aspirated.
Whatever year it was on his last visit to nambucca a whole group of hellbug related people were sitting around talking turbos, and he didnt seem to have any objections then. Yeah it wasnt his way, but he wasnt thumbing his nose and walking off. A few times over that weekend I got the impression that he admired what we do here in OZ given our geographic and financial exile. He certainly wasnt saying 'yeah thats fast but its turbo'. If the trophy had to go to a berg priciple car, there would be none around to win. No VDO guages ('we dont use VDO cos they're crap' - cant sue dead people) no oil coolers (shouldnt get hot in the first place), no compression......
What has happened in the past with the GB trophy is history. Its fixed now. Anyone looking for me at next years nationals will find me under Leighs gearbox giving him a special clutch 'adjustment'.

a couple of Q's
does street registered vw mean vw powered or any type of motor?
plus any idea what sort of time would be needed to be in the running with a fair chance? (not that my car will even be close to finished by then + it will never be that fast anyway)
thanks.

Clutch adjustment! Man I don't need a clutch adjustment I need a 4th gear. Chris do you know anyone with a 1.04 sitting around idle? A 4th gear, a trip to see Shimo and I'm back on the road again! My motors been finished for weeks sitting on the stand ready to go.
I guess not everyone here digs turbo's huh!

All right,
I've been abstaining from commenting on this thread for a while (almost since I started it actually), because everyone seems to have gotten wound up in this Gene Berg trophy business.
I meant all of australia - not just those who can get to the easternstates shows.
I meant quarter mile times (sorry to be picky, but it is the standard most people go by).
I meant any engine, not only VW.
By my rules, any VW bodied car (which rules out Manxs, buggies and kit cars) with legal licence plates on it would qualify.
But anyways - I was only curious 🙂 I had no idea about the gene berg trophy. I still dont know what show the races are / were held at !!
If you want to win the "Gene Berg" trophy, play by the rules Steve has posted.
If you think otherwise, donate a new trophy and make a new award.!
You need to have a written criteria for your new "category"and name it what you want. e.g "normally aspirated trophy"," turbo trophy", "Non Vw powered trophy"
Water under the bridge and we all need to move on :thumb ,be part of the solution not part of the problem.

You didnt hear what I said, in my opinion the car that did win was legally registered and was in the spirit of a street car, in fact it was setup in much the same way as Ben Duries cars are, no back seat etc. The car in question was not turboed. Funny the guy doing all the jumping up and down and fitting plates to a drag car owned a VW business. Even funnier, the last few winners dont even have a VW business, Leigh is a hydrogapher, the VW business people must not have any interest in this trophy???
The 2 turbo cars that have won the trophy in the past, Keith & Leighs cars most certainly comply to the rules, Keiths car was his only car so it was very street, Leighs car is not driven as much, he has 2 other cars, but Leigh would have no problems driving his bug on any made road. It is also 100% street legal.
We cant ask Gene what he thinks, but I know that he acknowldged that the turbo guys in oz were and still are streets ahead of what they are doing in the states.
As has already been said its water under the bridge, but I didnt bring it up.

My comment was said simply due to my experience with the eastern creek off street drags, with so many alleged street cars being full house drag cars with plates from another vehicle bolted on. Some of the rotary guys are notorious for this.
At the off streets, "scrutineering" wasnt much more than a check on seatbelts and helmets, not once was I asked for my rego papers, engineers report or a comparison between these and the VIN number on the car.
street cars my arse.
HOWEVER this is not a stab at the Berg trophy, as I have never attended, either as a competitor or spectator. Which is why I asked.
It seems to me that a fair proportion of the VW community is so insulated they cant see past their own layer of bubble-wrap. Get over it you lot, it's seriously not that importaint!!
humpty ·
Still the fastest...Officially.
Leigh has only run the 1/8th as far as I know. But he has achieved 8.8 or something. That's gotta be a high 11 or low 12 second 1/4 at least.
Keith has run the 1/4 at Easter Creek years ago and I think he did something like a 12.1 on radials & spinning the wheels the whole way. I know Keiths car was a driver (remember that day we went for a blast around Coogee Keith?).
There are those guys in Melbourne (VOLLKOMMEN ART or something!) that have done 10's or 11's but these cars aren't very streetable. VERY old school (KAWELL drag style) turbo set-ups. Though they are registered...supposedly. Some one in Vic get off their lazy arse & find out huh! As for here in Perth...Will I think I'm it (And thats not much!) I have a best of 14.8 (1/4) air cooled & my brother has a 13 flat ( RS Liberty powered Notch). We do have 10 second drag bug that is not to far off road worthy...Just kidding! There must be some others over here, I just haven't seen or heard of'em!

the fastes that I know of out here in the atates is Buddy Hales oval rag. It ran 11.90's in the quarter. He competed in the Renn Kafer Cup. It was registered, insured, and was a full show car. Interior, body, chassis, was all show car. It was on flat 4 brm's. The only thing was that it was on T bars instead of bumpers. It was one bad ass car.
Wobbley ·
I found the site while surfing. There seems to be a nerve hit with this forum.
The fastest street reg VW?
If there is a problem with how legal a car was or wasn't it can only come back to the scrutineer and not any entrant. as the organisers are the only ones you can blame for this situation.
As I can see it most of the cars are NOT STREET LEGAL. With the inconsistant State regs. etc. There can never be a level playing field for such a vague title.
Maybe FASTEST STREETABLE VW. Have fun with this.

Thanks Wobbly
I think it was some of the organisers who got their nickers into the biggest knot on this one.

Pretty simple read the rules.
Wobbley ·
Reading the rules is Okay. From what I've seen on these pages it appears
1/ Nobody has been checking the vehicles,
2/ Nobody has been running to a common set of rules,
3/ From my memory the rules Steve put up were close to the original intent of G.B.
4/ At some stage some of the people who seem to be finger pointing need to realise their own cars are most likely not "Street Legal" even if they are registered.
So maybe we should consider who really is at fault..... The entrant or the people who let this happen....... How long ago now??????????????:

I think I have posted these on the forum somewhere in the past, but here goes. just remeber this....She's real mild!
1776cc, CW69 crank (Demello), 9lbs FW, BERG style pulley (by STOKER), Engle 120, Shimo 044 (7.5-1CR) heads (ex Keith Hausler!!!), BERG sump, CroMo P/Rods, Stock C/Rods, Home grown bolt together valve gear with BERG adjusters and an 09 with my old ALLISON (CRANE) ignition. As for the transaxle....Built by TRANSFORM and is basically the FREEWAY flyer. 4.12 R&P (I think!), stock 40hp ratios, Superdiff and some of the usual trick to tighten it up. HD side plate, modded shift forks, etc.....Home grown engine & trans mounts (BERG style). The rear tyre size I was using when I ran that time was a 205/60-15 on 7" FUCH. I think! And I did that time (@ Ravenswood) a few months after my last trip across Oz to Sydney (done the Nullabor 3 times in this car!) for the Nationals back in 94. Since then I have only been able to do a best of 15.2 @ Kwinana MP. Tracks not as nice as Ravo. Track is more suited to slicks I reckon! Oh and I've done over 200,000 k's on this engine with only the rings replaced once & the crank case replace when I cracked the second hand one I used on the first build up! Steve Said,
I'll stand corrected by anyone who knows exactly what happened ...
Jeff Unwin with a 2.3 L (?)unregisterable "registered" beetle;
Then Stan Pobjoy/Peter Richards in a drag car with plates (to prove a point I think);
Then came the turbo cars of Mike Kristen and others I'm not sure of.
Please, somebody fill in the blanks.
------------------------------------------------------
Dave Said,
All of the above cars are NOT legally registered there full Drag cars.
Doug you will have to expand on exactly what specks you want
Dave I think you should make sure of the facts before you write a post, I think you will find that the car of Mike Kristen refered to in this post is actually his old 2165 turboed black oval, BAD056 . This car was definatly street registed and legal, it was infact his daily driver. You should remember it as it beat you in the final for the vw bracket the same year he won the fastest street registed vw and also the trophy for the fastest reaction time recorded by a vw......Now I'll have a Crownie too

Hey Fraser,
Your ripping me off 80 cents, that was a dollar I gave you not 20 cents, and you promised you wouldn't tell!!!!!!!!!
I can't see what all the fuss is about. If anyone has any hassles with the legalities of my car being 100% street legal and registered let it be known, I can personally vouch for the last three years. It's 100% engineered, not once but twice after I made a few changes. I drive it down to Ulludulla regularly and it's made Nambucca twice, Goulburn, Wakefield Park club outings and events for 4 years as is! The motor has done 60 000 with the turbo and hasn't been touched. You can pip me for illegal headlight height but good luck with the rest. Remember some of us are enthusiasts, not mechanics or race car drivers. I'd be an imposter if I tried to pass myself off as anthing but a Hydrographer. Keep it fun people, you'd think their was money to be made!
How many sleeps till nambucca Chris!

All i can say is, if anyone has a doubt as to who is the fastest - bring a faster car to the nats next year and try and beat Leigh.
Then when YOUR name is on the trophy, and ONLY then, can you say what you like.
All cars have to be scruitineered to enter, and there is nothing wrong with Leighs car.
There may be a few jeolous people out there is all i can say...

Update for 2004
Most events were held at Oran Park in Sydney, which in the early days was a distance of 850 feet, which means nothing to anyone.
In or around 1993 I convinced the NSWHRA to reduce the track length to a standard 1/8 mile 660 feet, so as the times would be representative to other tracks around the world.
I have to check my OTHER records as some of these may be adjusted or added to.
In the early years of this trophy the STREET REGISTERED rules were vague to say the least. Jeff Unwin and Mr Berg discussed and determined the rules as such. These have and will be published each year prior to each event.
NO CORRESPONDANCE will be entered into.

Hi E'one, this is a great web site! It's terrific to see so many people still enthusiastic about the humble V-dub. Reading this particular thread [I believe that's what it is called] prompted me to locate and peruse thru my old time cards. My last run in the car was at the VW Jamboree oh & those other fast 4s & rotary things way back in '99. My quickest run is as follows:60 ft - 1.692. 330ft- 5.064.
660ft- 7.915 @ 86.14 mph 1000ft -10.436.
Et.- 12.589 @ 104.34 mph.
Hope u find this interesting and I look foward to be back on the track and meeting many of you in person real soon,
Buy for now Craig Paton.

Rod Richardson's beetle clocked 12.293 at 106.71 mph in June this year.
It is a registered street car, 2276cc,48 ida`s, beetle all steel 61. I think Peter Page (Dak-A-Tak) was driving. Willowbank Jamboree this weekend so fingers crossed some 11second runs will be not too far away!

Use to be a 1916 fuel injected, turbo'd water-to-air intercooled street car. Was set up with an IRS setup, with LSD. Same car also lead the hillclimb class I believe.
Nitrous? Won't that discount your car as a street car?
Craig Torrens ·
What Beetle was this ^
Craig Paton ·
I have to congratulate Adam Debaisi , that is a seriously quick streetcar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I was to run nitrous, that would put me in the same class as a turbo car. It would run in the forced induction class at the drags! Not sure of the letters they use to catagorize the classes. I think the forced induction 4cyl class use to be SS/CC. Your right though as far as legalities go, nitrous is illegal on the street and therefore my car would not be deemed as a streetcar! [legal anyway]
But I'll stik to normally aspirated stroker!
Stage 1 on my Richards/Pobjoy engine should hopefully get me pretty competitive again!
Cheers Craig. 🙂:o

I used a bad description there. Adam Debaisi's green turbo beetle.
Nitrous is illegal on the street. However, nitrous kits can be legal to have on the street, depending how they are installed. There must be a physical break in the line so they can't just be "turned on" fast and furious style. Rules are different for different states.
It would be fun, there is no doubts there though to have the bottle plumbed and ready to push that button.
Are you going to have your new engine ready for the nationals? That is coming up fast as far as engine building time goes.
Craig Paton ·
Hey VWfastback,
Well if e/thing goes to plan I'd love to get to the Nats!
I'd like to meet in person a lot of guys on this site that I've conversed with.
Never been before, but if I was to go it'd be to race.
Not likin the idea of towing all that way from Toowoomba.
I reckon that would be a 18hr drive towing. YUK!
Looks like I have sponsorship from our local VW dealership to supply a tow car. I was hoping to get a Touareg but it may be a T5 Transporter!! Can't winge about that!!
When is the Nats on next year? So I can stik it in my diary.
Cheers Craig.

Nothing about beetles, water-cooled, year models, turbos.
So I guess a twin turboed passat could win the Gene Berg trophy.

2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.
water cooled cars dont have cylinder tin! I suppose it could be fitted just to comply though?
I say they can compete if they drain all the water prior to a run!
Dak-A-Tak ·
Hi!Everyone, this is draging on!!!!!! in a big way. Everyone is missing the big picture. It doesn't matter what you race( Air cooled, water cooled, turbo, nitrous) as long that you are racing . The BERG Trophy was good in its day but its behide in times with rules and safety . Trophys collect dust, they don't help you race or get to the track, or pay for maintenance of vehicle. We need people to think about the future of the vw scene . THINK ABOUT IT !!!!! eg, five years time ( ten or more drag cars, people coming here from over sea's,clubs helping each other ) lots more.

Hey Dave dont be so sure Watercooled wouldnt start running a few good times . I just think nobody has spent any real money on late vw's to make them go .
I'm still intrugued about the rules and could they be altered in some way to include all members of the vag stable . That is Audi Seat and Skoda as well , But , there must be some kind of limitation to engine size so that a w16 bugatti or something cant enter . Any ideas or am I just dreaming here?

yes I do!
should be ammended to......
FASTEST STREET REGISTERED AIRCOOLED VW
😂
the rest seems pretty simple to me. it wasn't a trophy for quickest race car, or fastest of the day........not for a V8 twin supercharged midmounted kombi........or a beetle with speed holes cut all through it and a big motor and box slapped in the week before to an already registered beetle.....
simply a high HP registered, streetable aircooled VW that made the best time of the day
obviously Rod Richardsons 48 IDA bug would whip some serious ass had it been run when the trophy was up for grabs
was it just another "class", that was awarded a trophy?............imagine it these days ? ...................Aarron could turn up in the kombi and i'm sure everyone would remember it......no one would forget the noise of cranky too or the twins........or the faultless runs of DB........or a "houndog" V "henry"............................and someone would win some "gene berg trophy" in a street car........???

Fantastic post Daimo
IMO the Gene Berg trophy was put into existence for the ideals of Gene Berg and what he felt was the most deserving car, based around his beliefs ( and the basis his business was started and grew from) basically a fast reliable STREET car. Actually to rephrase the obvious there, a fast reliable street air cooled beetle.
Easy really. 🙂
Bug_racer ·
So what you guys are saying only applies to aircooled cars . So there is no way you can have a fast reliable watercooled VW ?
The reason why Gene didnt go into watercooled cars was because he was old and he built his whole workshop around air cooled cars . Not long after he died I noticed here in Sydney a lot of workshop started closing or started working on watercooled cars . Before that time it was like only Mullers and a small few that worked on watercooled cars . Hellbug / SKH /Dr Lubes etc have all faded away as a once proud Aircooled workshop into history while others like Vintage Vee Dub and Volksbahn etc started taking on watercooled cars into their service centres as air cooled numbers fell . Gene Berg enteprises started doing the same thing . Its now 2010 , some 33 years since the last air cooled bug was sold .
The whole notion of having a Gene Berg trophy for quick air cooled car is flawed . Everyone has progressed except for the select few of pursist who carry on a tradition based on old values and sentiments . The rules can be changed to allow all VAG cars to compete , but its more the acceptance of these rules by the hard line right wing aircooled owners that needs to be adopted so that this can continue on in many years to come . You guys are so stubborn your going to let the Gene Berg trophy fade away as a memory of bitter fueds of rules and regulations that could not be resolved thus allowing the memory of a once proud competition dissolve . Question is , Is that what Gene Berg would have wanted ?
type3vw ·
a good street car class should combine both air cooled
and water cooled vws to compete, as long as cars are
registered and roadworthy. and if its a bug it should have
a type one engine, if its a kombi have the right type of
engine that came with that model kombi. and if its golf
passat etc. it should have the right engine that came
with that model car. i love the air cooled vws personally
but would like to see a tuff street vw class that
comprises air cooled and water cooled vws together.
but roadworthiness will be hard. engine lids must be on,
no full fibreglass front . fibreglass guards shouldnt
matter they are not that much lighter then steel.
no stingers. full cooling system should be on.
no exposed front mount coolers.
no turbos hanging out of the bonnet or bootlid.
only plumbed back wastegates.
but there is always loop holes in all rules.

I have just read through 9 pages of discussion regarding the fastest street registed VW , and I could not believe that there was no mention of my turbo oval . Has everyone forgotton it ?
I busted my arse in 2005 to build a full street car , with full glass & rubbers , headliner , door panels , carpets , both front seats , spare tyre and pump 98 ULP fuel , to compete in the VW nationals drags / Gene Berg trophy . What a waste of time it was , I built the turbo oval beetle , showed every step of the build to aussie vee-dubber readers , had it engineered , street registed and engine /chassis numbers matched the paperwork .
I ran 11.6@122mph at the VW nationals drags only to be denied the trophy and have it awarded to a watercooled audi that ran 2 secs slower .
This is what happens in racing when some moron in the management doesnt like you and/or your car , or you are beating his mates .
It doesnt matter what rule changes are made , some clown will always be there to stuff it all up .
Since then the street registed and engineered turbo oval at WPVW has run 6.73@109.75mph (1/8 mile) and 10.49sec@132mph (1/4 mile) on street tyres .
AUSTRALIAS FASTEST STREET REGISTED AIR-COOLED VW , until proven otherwise .

And Arron Britcher's Black Squareback Panel is on the road now.....Now that has to be a real contender! He hasn't run it at the drags yet...Maybe next year!

While the whole build was good and AFAIK you are the quickest VW street car it really doesnt go with what the Gene Berg trophy is all about .
How you got it registered with a 2700cc+ Turbo engine in an early beetle is beyond me . In my terms that would be like putting an R32 engine in a MK1 Golf then turbo charging it . It would absolutely fly and you could probably pass rego but its not a true street car . Did you drive it there or have it towed ? If your towing it then how is it any different to a drag car ? A bit of paperwork that says its complied and registered doesnt pass . If thats the case then this is a street car too :
rego is PACMAN .
As much as I liked watching your build and seeing your car race its not a true street car . Others make think otherwise , thats why a set of uniform rules should be made
tayloredvw ·
A street car is a car that can get driven around on the road and when pulled over by transport department doesn t fail any of there "RULES". Mr penrose would definately pass that test and is the guy i thought of when i first saw this post.

We all know that alot of these cars, if they were taken to the RTA (NSW) would have no chance of passing an inspection, ande the engineer who passed it would lose his lisence, I mean no offence to any out there, even I can go down to habiby's work shop and get a pink slip. Personly I couldn't give a shit, but don't kid yourselves, even if you have an after market steering wheel you can be defected.
This debate could go on for ever.

Im not cranky about the watercooled thing . Im just trying to see where the line is between street car and race car . For me my line is simple . If a car has to be towed anywhere unless its broken down it no longer qualifies as a street car . Im just asking for your opinion

I also heard someone got defected for not having enough washer fluid in the bottle .
You could get defected for anything . Lights not set correctly , there has even been some Golf owners with R32's that have been defected for noise . What the gene berg trophy was about was building a tough street car . Not putting plates on a race car .

Wayne your turbo beetle is an awesome vehicle and a credit to you.
Bug racer, when someone has had everything complianced during the build then it is a registered, air cooled, fast and therefor ticks the boxes.
When debate about classes lessens peoples desire to build a fast car and run it, then I think that is a real stuff up. My 2c. It is about racing and enjoying it, and appreciating what other people have achieved also. 😉

Thanks Wayne for admitting my car is quicker, and it was only a 2233cc engine!!!
You surprise me though Wayne, seeing as I am the reason you car went quick. Have you forgotten that you were struggling with the tune up and was looking at the colour of tail pipe richening it up. But because you were on C16 I told you that I would lean it off and that you were misreading the C16. Then you elected to listen to me and went your fastest pass the very next run.
Those street tyres you have are not radials, they are slicks with grooves in them, not much difference.

with that model car. i love the air cooled vws personally
but would like to see a tuff street vw class that
comprises air cooled and water cooled vws together.
but roadworthiness will be hard. engine lids must be on,
no full fibreglass front . fibreglass guards shouldnt
matter they are not that much lighter then steel.
no stingers. full cooling system should be on.
no exposed front mount coolers.
no turbos hanging out of the bonnet or bootlid.
only plumbed back wastegates.
but there is always loop holes in all rules.
That probably sums up what Id like , fibreglass guards dont bother me , same with interior . Basically whatever you can pull off the car in an hour to race it should be legit .
Wayne and Nick . Your cars are so so close to each other in terms of time that the difference between who is fastest could even be as simple as who goes to the toilet before the run and who goes after ! There is like not even a bumper difference between the cars !! Two definately unique cars ! Two very talented builders , and Id love to see you race side by side 🤖

I guess Troy's Type 3 would fit into the rules listed above.
full interior, bumpers, lights, wipers, all steel, engien lid is on and turbo is plumbed back!!
what to remove in a hour though.......
Can't wait for the next trip to the dyno though!! Should be interesting......

And Crazy Col's, a 2332 IDA running 8.3's 1/8 and 13.0 1/4's and daily on the street, drives to Warwick and Wiillowbank when competing. 👍

Thanks for thinking of me matty,I've got a 8.20 time card some where,And loco 66 and me had another 13.0 100+mph daily driver bug racer wouldn't like it tho! 1600 to4 just a dump pipe no muffler as such but a turbo is a muffling device according to mechanial engineers,45mm side draught hanginging out the boot lid!Home made nitrous kit dunlop g grids 130 octane high lead pump gas(Got it from the same pump they used to fill up the hawker sea fury ww2 fighter)Like all the cars me and luke have had they were are daily drivers, most people wouldn't say they are streeters but we never saw any faster true daily drivers. These cars were never built with the goal of australias fastest vw street car they were built to make myself and lukey smile, and i'm still smiling now thinking about making our own nitrous kit for lukes "SHIT FIGHTER"and some of our other adventures, thats what its all about mates having fun thrashing to make races days with out sleep borrowing parts doing what you have to do to race!
Craig Torrens ·
so Cole you've done a flat 13.00 ?
coletrickle ·
13.04 at 100mph in the "SHITFIGHTER",and 13.07 at 104 in "FRUIT LOOP".
Craig Torrens ·
Cool....you should add your timeslip in the 1/4 mile times, I'm surprised you haven't already done that !

my car ran a 12.1 before it's last incantation on street rego.with street tyres on the rear.but wasn't steel bodied, but it was only driven 5k's to and from work.
i class a street car differently to others though.nicks is still a street car to me.it depends on what your interpretation of street car.
this post was a massive dickpulling comp if you ask me.
as long as they are quick, and driven with rego who cares.
arron's kombi rocks it up.
bye

Just bumping this up after near 2 years since last post . Watercooled cars are now easily being made to run 12 second passes with many into the 11 second zone all daily driven .
Its going to be harder to judge with air-cooled cars as who is a true street car given not many people still daily air-cooled cars and most are towed to and from events .
The Gene Berg trophy for air-cooled cars is well and truly outdated now in the 21 Century although there should be an equivalent for water-cooled cars as more and more get built .

I have run 12.43@ 107mph in my 2442 NA street car. Road legal and registered. I used it for two months as a daily driver, still gets driven. Admitedly you need noise cancelling headphones with the ipod to live with it... but it is a real street car... 4000 rpm at 100 km/h makes it fun !!

Bug_racer wrote:For me my line is simple . If a car has to be towed anywhere unless its broken down it no longer qualifies as a street car . Im just asking for your opinion
Bug_racer wrote:Did you drive it there or have it towed ? If your towing it then how is it any different to a drag car ? A bit of paperwork that says its complied and registered doesnt pass .

I haven't been on this or any forum for ages now & thought I'd have a quick look.
I'd never seen this thread & as I started reading it, I along with many others would straight away how long this has been transpiring for.
Some of the comments aren't helpful & some contradict what a true "street car" is.
I'm not singling you out at all Seb, but some of the comments made throught this subject incl yourself don't make any sense.
Especially about the towing comment.
You have to realize that on a large scale VW's both air & watercooled aren't all that reliable once modified.
They also aren't all that reliable either once you start to punish them hard. Yes they might be fine on the street & for daily duties, but once they're loaded up on a super sticky surface with 5000+rpm launches, they give out. (Alot of cars do!!!)
They just can't be abused like most cars ie Holdens & Fords where you can drive your 500+hp Streeter on a 7hr round trip to a track, punish the living christ out of for 3-4 days, smash 10 sets of tyres, then drive it home without a hiccup!
There are people that tow "bone stock beetles" to these events.
Does this make it a drag car, even though its completely bone stock on Historic Reg & gets regularly street driven?
How does driving a street car to an event, then spending an hour to strip the living hell out of it removing seats, trims, exhausts, headlights (cold air intakes) & what ever else you can remove, make it a true street car?
This would just make it a drag car with rego & plates wouldn't it? As its no longer RWC!
So for eg.
When my car was running & completely RWC, I was doing 800-1000km a week for daily duties & was really my only car at the time. I'd do more km's in 6 months, than what most would ever do in there "weekend" cars in a lifetime of ownership!
All I'd change on it to race would be fit a wider/stickier set of drive tyres, that were still 100% street legal & still sat under the guards. I'd also remove the spare wheel & jack as this is a safety requirement at nearly every race track. (a car without a spare wheel is still classed as RWC. If the car has a spare which is bald etc, then its classed as unRWC. In VIC anyway)
Race it (best of 12.99@107mph). Full steel, weight, glass etc etc.
Then refit the original wheels, spare wheel, jack, wash off the rubber & carry on with daily duties.
But cause I trailered it to & from the race track, you'd class it as a drag car & not a street car! Even though its still 100% RWC & all I've changed is to wider front street legal RWC tyres.
I like many others have found that VW drivetrains aren't the best/strongest items going around & also extremely dislike being left stranded on many occasions with broken parts after a hard launch either on the street or race track! Especially a ways from home.
Not all of us have the luxury of having a race track within 10-15mins from them.
I know I don't! My nearest track is a 3hr round trip. The next furthest is a 7hr round trip!
This is the reason why alot of people tow their cars. To avoid this painful exercise.
Also on another comment made earlier by someone else in regards to driving a car 15km before hand to prove its a street car.
Just about most "drag cars" can do this! Even non rad. cooled blown alky cars can do this!!!
This is why HOTROD Mag in the US started "Drag Week".
1000+miles, 5 days, 5 tracks & not a trailer in sight!!!
The only trailers are the ones being towed by the cars racing, which carry all their parts, equipment etc etc.
This is a test of true "street cars" incl 6, 7 & many 8 sec true "street cars"
Unfortunately for OZ, we don't have the luxury of having a bunch of drag strips close together.
My idea of a true "street car" (which is also on par with alot of OS "street car"class racing guidelines)
Full weight, steel, glass, regular street driven duties, race it as you drive it on the street bar a set of drive tyres. But still have to be DOT tyres. EG Mickey T ET streets, M&H's, Hoosiers etc etc. Pump fuel, full exhaust & items removed for safety requirements. IE. spare wheel, personal belongings.
Doesn't matter how it gets to & from the race track. Kudo's to the few that do drive to & from though.
Couldn't give a rats about engineers & rwc BS. Cause you'd always be able to pick something thats not RWC on any car (incl. brand new cars!!!) or requires an engineers. Eg. new cars with aftermarket intercoolers, non compliant US spec brake hoses & crap like that, to non-compliant larger capacity engine swaps & power adders.
Eg. going from a stock 60hp 1600cc T1 to a 120hp 1600cc T1 technically requires an engineers. As there is a performance increase of 100%! This will also require uprated seating, seatbelts, brakes, suspension etc etc etc.
My 2 cents.

Unfortunately water-cooled owners don't seem to support vw only events in large numbers. There are a few who do compete but the thing that disappoints me is that I know there are a lot of fast water cooled cars out there but very few are interested in actually competiting!! It was good to see Guy Harding at warwick this year keeping the air cooled guys honest with the golf r!!
As far as rules go keep it simple stupid!!
One class for forced induction and one for n/a, one for vw other powered.
Radial tyres, mufflers, relevant rego and roadworthy items.
Anybody with any sort of vw knowledge can look at a car and tell whether it falls inthe appropriate category.

after reading through all of this thread, i concluded that some people did not read the subject heading.
they come up with Gene Berg, who cares, no one owns the rights on what cars in what states can have in
they're car, if its registered,............its obvious,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,its registered. DUH any VW.
Mr Sweetman asked a BASIC question, oh people started bringing rules in, must go by Berg Trophy
you know what i say to that #$%^ off. seems as though some of these Sydney guys want to own the giver of
Titles.........
You run your car where ever, if its fastest street, well...SAY NO MORE
JESUS, some of your guys need to grin and bear it and swallow some pride.
thats my 10 cents worth.

How about getting pulled over by the Police & D.O.T. on your way to Willowbank, get checked out all over - continue on & run a low 11, drive home. Not to mention air conditioning on & cruise control working 🙂
