A passer by commented today " fixing it again"....
"Well no, just tinkering" I replied.
Got me thinking about what all the other VW freaks were up to as well.
Sooooo...... What did others get done today?.... Add a quick run down and add a pic if you like each time you get something done, be it big or small, routine service or turbo and EFI.
Today I was playing on the stocka. Changed a stuffed tie rod end for a newie,Greased the front end after wading through knee deep water in this weeks floods, pulled and rebuilt the windscreen wiper
assembly happily knowing that would stop the rain, adjusted the brakes and rotated the tyres and fixed a leaking muffler flange.
What about you?

Nope. Because I was by myself I opted not to get possibly stuck. But if I had someone else there to pull me out I would have given it a crack 😀 I would have tried going around to the right in the first photo, but the water was deeper then expect and the bottom was quite soft and boggy, it would have been interesting 🤘
I have a winch sitting at home that I need to fit up the the Baja. It would be handy in times like this when I'm out exploring by myself.

Pulled the Dells to pieces and got the crap out of them
They been intermediatley popping and farting, running on 3 cylinders and I had been thinking it was water in them or something
Pulled the idles cleared them and she would run again - but then it would come back
So - pulled them and opened them up and got some gunk out

Took the dogs for a drive to Sandgate and let them remove some energy along the waterfront. Cruised home then decided to use it again tonight and upset some bloke in his fully hectic 6 cylinder Turbo diesel Patrol with blow off valve, dump pipe out the side. didn't want me to get in front of him as I had to take the next street to the right so I had to run 2nd gear to redline and pulled 3 odd car lengths on him. So he decided to give me his HID's on full power lol

I discovered the other day that I had no headlights - either high or low beam.
Checked fuses & steering column plugs etc. (didn't think it would be these, as I would still have some lights), so I figured it had to be somewhere at the relay block, which is inside my centre console. 🙁
So, I had to remove my passenger seat & gear shift to get the console out so I could get at the wiring properly. Only took me a minute to find a wire from the fuse box to the relay block that had broken the connection off one end - the connections on each end were corroded, a legacy of when I had a windscreen washer hose break and spray windscreen washer fluid all over the back of my fusebox & the relay block in Tamworth about 20 years ago. Since then, things started corroding very quickly - I cleaned it all a few times, especially immediatly after, and over the years have had to replace quite a few relays, connections, etc. This was one that had not been done yet.
Only took a few minutes to make up & fit a new wire, then I had to re-fit the rest of the car interior. It is all a goer again now. 🙂
donn ·
Noticed that I had no indicators or brake lights on the wench, they were working fine yesterday morning but went for a spin in the afternoon and their cactus, easy fix, new fuse, the second time this has happened in 6 months so I've got some problem there but stuffed if I can locate it. Best cure at the moment is to carry spare fuses. 😀

Started pulling the 2270 type 4 out of the bug. Seems the gearbox don't like all the torque. Spent a lovely 1.5 hours on side of highwway friday afternoon. I am hoping its only the throwout bearing has come off the clutch fork. Was driving nicely and a sound i didnt like gradually got worse and then i couldnt get any gears. But a big thumbs up to RACQ i am not a member but they stopped and towed me off highway to a safer spot to wait for the tow truck i called. I will be joining RACQ now.

Now that the buggy's going I decided to have a look at the cab as to why it sounds like it's only running on 3 cylinders. Pulled off the leads from the dist cap one by one and found it wasn't sparking on 2 cylinders! After pulling out the offending spark plugs (not so easy on a FI engine!) cleaned them up and now appears to sound and run perfectly😎
TorxKiwi ·
Bled the brakes ....... again. Until the kids refused to assist with the 'pump, pump, hold' routine.
Got the timing light out to check it as was running a bit hot. Figure that something well in advance of 10 degrees BTDC may have had something to do with it. All sorted now.
Pulled on the handbrake upon arrival back in the garage and it had a mini self-destruct. Release button flew out the end of the handle. Dismantled, cleaned up, coat of paint and back together.
Don't mind the little issues, it's nice to feel like you accomplish something once in a while!!

Had to adjust the clutch pedal freeplay every couple of weeks. Thought I'd change the cable. Glad I did as the picture shows. This was in the Bowden tube. Compared the old cable to the new. There was about a 5mm difference in length. Cable was obviously stretching ready to break.

Now I know who to call when I couldn't be bothered doing it myself 😎
Today I installed a set of 44 Webers, but now have constant backfiring from the exhaust! It's too dark to be chasing an intake leak, blocked idle jet, or other issue so ill leave it for tomorrow.

I finally took the 52 bug to the track, well air strip for our first race in it. We turned the boost down to 12ish, didn't change any tuning. Added some race fuel & raced old school, didn't use stage brake etc. No burn out. Funny American car with the stick shift on the wrong side 🙂 ran a 8.825sec, 1.745 60FT, reaction .387.
the VW drove very good, I only hit the 6300rpm shift light in first , didn't notice until we watch the video. 😂 felt heaps good.

I wont make it to the Nationals supersprint this year as I have had way too much on my plate recently . I spent the past 3 weeks (night & day) preparing Craigs formula vee with new engine for the racing .

Took my baby out for it first drive in almost 12 weeks. What can i say... I'm ECSTATIC with the work that's been done on the car and it was definitely worth the wait. The car handles beautifully, 1,000x better than when i first bought it. The steering is dead centre and doesnt drift in any direction, zero play on the steering. New disc brakes are an absolute GEM and i tried braking with no hands... just comes to a very confident stop in a straight line. Couldnt be happier.
I think i might have a few things to say on an old topic about narrowed beams (the beam is narrowed 4.5"). To be perfectly honest, the thread put the fear of God in me about narrowing the beam, and i was expecting bump steer on every pebble, instability on every corner and chaos on every bump in the road. After trying it for the first time today, this thing literally stuck to the road like sh* to a blanket. I dont see any problem with the turning circle as i was easily able to do a u turn on an intersection (full lock and no rubbing at all) and with the lower stiffer stance I definitely feel a lot more certain it will go where i point it.
Lovin it! Now its time to cruise 🙂🙂🙂

I was getting that familiar paddling a canoe feeling when driving my bug again because the seat rail bushings were going to shit.
I originally replaced these in my first 71 Sbug back in 1996 and put them in my Lbug when I swapped interiors so they only lasted 17 years.
I feel so hard done by 😂
But like all repro parts these days the new ones are a lousy fit and being smaller still rock around a bit.
They are ones sold by CIP1, Micks etc.
Has anyone found good quality ones anywhere?
I'll do some ringing around on Monday and try my luck
The originals I bought were genuine ones from Al at Stokers Siding but he has long since retired and shut up shop.

Today was front wheel align on the club's Drag Fasty - instead of +1.5 camber and 11mm toe out, the 0.5 and 5mm toe out she has now should help handling a bit.
Tomorrow will be flush and bleed brakes, tappets, oil change, tune up and maybe even fit a kill switch and push starter.

Not today, but last Friday night, I started at about 5:30pm to wake up the car from it's 2 year slumber in the shed. I put in a brand new battery and fitted a new Ramflo air cleaner to the single Weber. Then I tried to take it for a test drive, but the throttle linkage failed. I went to a mate's workshop, chopped up the throttle arm and re-welded the barrel nut bracket to a different location. Then we went back and put it on, then tuned up the weber to get it running. Then we went back down to the workshop with the exhaust leaking and popping huge flames.
Then, at the workshop, we changed the oil, took the exhaust off, cleaned up all the exhaust joints, sealed it up with copperseal, put it back together, secured the battery and mounted a fire extinguisher to the floor ready for the VW Club of SA bitumen khanacross on Saturday. Finishing time: 2:35am.
We didn't have time to wash the dust off it, but we made it to Tailem Bend in time for the driver's briefing at 9:30am, and the scrutineers kindly squeezed us in a bit late!

Readers might know of Tweety the trike with supercharged EA81 Subaru (soon to be non boosted SPFI) mated to type 3 auto box.
Had over the last 3 months replaced the auto pan gasket twice and it seemed to keep leaking. Had the trike in a mechanics shop recently and he noticed the "O" ring on the auto dip stick tube was the culprit and replaced it. no more leaks. funny how the oil coverage on the pan resembled a leakign pan gasket but was actually an O ring.

I found a new way of stopping a VW from going😠 Been playing with the buggy and noticed that the accelerator wasn't moving much (buggy hasn't really been used a great deal recently) . Took off the cable and moved the pedal - fine, pulled on the cable and it was fighting all the way out of the tube so I decided to do a pull through using a piece of stainless steel wire with an oil soaked rag (only a little rag!) connected to the end. Well this rag is now solidly fixed at about the middle of the tube🙁 I do amaze myself that now after 40 years of playing with them I can still come up with something new.

Made up a dummy tail pipe for the new vintage speed box, looks great so out with the hole saw and cut two new inlet holes into the box, ordered some stainless bends to fabricate the final product, had to modify the inner guards to accommodate the tailpipes but works a treat. Spent the last few days fitting fuel hoses, connecting wires and making brake pipes, getting very close to start up day. Least it has kept my mind off what colour bloody interior I want !!!!!!!!

Cleaned and tightened the oil pressure sender connection. Much easier than engine teardown
Gauge was fluctuating wildly with throttle so must have shared earth with air/fuel ratio.... Thought I'd busted the lil screamer 🙅🥲

Looked at the car in the shed under the cover and though, I,ll have to do some prep for Warwick soon.😁

I still claim that yesterday counts...
I fanged cr@p out of Jezzi at Mt Cotton again... 50.00 the best of my 9 runs... sooooo close to backing up my 49, but still good enough to disappoint the 2 quick Escort's and Cortina that were chasing in my class.
Beer glasses as trophies are such a great idea !!!

EDIT: Plus I celebrated over a coldy with Ian and Dave O who were both in my shed getting the new engine into the Club Fasty.

Replaced a clutch cable - the last one has only lasted 240,000km - bloody thing.

Got the car ready for scrutineering and Club Plates. Installed the headlights, managed to get the eyelids to work with the Rossis... might still need a little tightening up. Installed new sun visors, and front bumper. Took some cool photos at my office (a 1960s style building).
** UPDATED PICS... Broke down that night... silly me didnt have a spare generator belt (no I wasnt wearing any stockings that night lol) so had to get towed. Oh well... thank God for RACV.

Got in a yoga type position and sprayed fertan up in behind the split's dash. Easy spot for the old rust cancer to start as it's one of those out of site places.

What didn I do to my VW today? Well it goes like this ! After salvaging the ole Oval in 08 and spending many an hour on it I finally stuck fuel down its throat stuck spark up its Rs and got noise out the exhaust. - Installed OG stainless steel trims to replace crappy aftermarket ones.

Next i might have a crack at doing some bodywork/painting before Day of... clean up that damaged fender and clean up the stone chips.

Yeah, Matt, it's a big effort to prepare a car for Valla [Raleigh]. Ol' No.8 Beetle is still in the trailer, however I managed to get the dipstick out and check the oil. The bloody tyres needed a bit of air, so I had to drag the air line out and take off the valve caps.....and screw them back on ! 🙄
It seemed OK at Wakefield Park a couple of months ago, so I won't muck about with it. 😀
MY68VW ·
Cut out the rusty front bumper mount, welded in new metal.
Found a huge, unexpected rust section under the passenger door, did some surgery - not much original metal left there! The whole section was full of expanding foam, most of it wet.
Did some panel beating to the passenger door after discovering a crease that was covered filled with putty, the bottom of the door was way outa line so whacked it with a hammer a few times - now nice and straight (as can be seen in above photo)

Started looking over my new Vert, walked around to the front RH wheel and there it is, a very large pool of oily substance on the floor, checked the brake fluid reservoir but it was chockers, not sure what it is but had to leave for an important appointment, called the fella I bought it off to ask if he had a clue as to what it could be, no, but he offered to come around to help me investigate. Tonight I opened the bonnet and took out the large tool bag that was in there then the carpet mat covering the spare wheel, there in the top of the spare is a nice pool of oil. Discovered an empty plastic one litre of oil in the tool bag, seems it was once full. Alls well that ends well. 😁🤪😀

Apart from driving it, I made a hubcap puller, took off one of the hubcaps, and gave it a darn good scrub! The inside chrome is pitted? Maybe rusty? So I applied a coat of rust converter to see that happens. Polished the outside with metal polish to see how good the chrome finish still is. Not too bad. Two small dents that I'll need to remove. I'll do the others after I've got this first one sorted.

When I was a teenager in the '70s we lived at Nambucca, I used to work in the family bakery on school holidays, when we took smoko at about 1 or 2 in the morning we used to see the V8 paper trucks fly by. Today (well, yesterday actually, close enough!) I went through 3 brushes, all ten fingernails, and 2L of degreaser, and got my heads all cleaned up.
Good news! No cracks anywhere.
Oh, and a toy box showed up in the mail, with bits for the heads in it, WOO!HOO!

It was yesterday, but i got all the drivers side of my chassis in Epoxy Mastic 121.

Started the recarpet in the cab, looks like I picked the wrong type as it isn't as flexible as I hoped to get around the curves and bends, no biggie as the same carpet is available in unbacked to do the bendy bits. Fitted the retractable lap / sash belts in the back to replace the lap only (.ive now got a spare set of retractable genuine VW laps for sale 😄 ) fitted the new carpet in the space behind the rear seat.
Question... Is there supposed to be some sort of cover to the back of the back seat, there was none there when I bought it but when the seat is folded forward it exposes the internals of the seat, looks shite

3 weeks ago really.
Went down to Swan Reach for a camping weekend with the folks.
On the way home the motor cut out. Seemed like it was vaporising. On top of that, the slighlty sloppy rotor button became a rotates where it wants rotor button. The small tag that locates it on the distributor shaft broke. Try getting a rotor button for a 71 VW 1600 on a Sunday. Anywhere!
Result. RAA truck from Blanchetown to Waikerie. Night in the tent at Waikerie Caravan Park. Try getting a motel with an 11 year old Cavalier Maltese cross (read vicious, room destroying mongrel!) (For those of you who've met Rosie you'd wonder how they'd turn her down!) RAA Truck from Waikerie to Peterborough. What was in the spares box from the roofless SuperBug. Oh no it's black not red brown! But it fits and the Notch is alive again!

Bought my Drag Car home last Friday after delivering it onMay 10th. The shit continues. Pulled the motor and trans to repair an auto thats shit it self on the Dyno last Thursday just as the tuning was being finished.Been in touch with the Guru and its already heading to the Gold Coast. Removed both front glass guards that are now cracked and paint scratched which were not like that May 9th. Got them at local paint shop. Have modified the exhaust to get the waste gate really close and better angle. Tuner reckons the 90 deg bend was too restrictive and causing boost issues. Looks like it will be 2016 now before it will race.

I saw a few people discussing it here and there, and figured if it worked for them it would for me too.
I don't think it really cleans the cases better than straight degreaser and a kitchen dish brush that I usually use, but it is certainly easier!
I had to lightly rub the cases still with a mild scourer before a thin coat of paint, it came out with a chalky oxide on some of it (so was obviously very clean), and a wipe of WD on the studs and on the inside to stop rust/oxides.

Freeze and release, and baby powder......please explain

Freeze/release to lube the threads on the cheap torsion lifter tool coz the threads started slowly rolling over a bit.
So I chucked the silly tool and went to the tried-and-true jack method, the preload I put into it had too much tension for my liking.
Baby powder to lube the rubber torsion housing bushes.
Oh, and coz it feels nice on my tootsies.

Been booked on for the Copper Coast Classic Cavalcade for about a month, finally got to check the Notch over at 5pm Friday! Not running well, test drive... flat out at 80k and bit of a miss, hmm, check carbs, fuel filter, leads at distributor. Know timing was right a few weeks ago as Alf had done such a good job tuning it. Scratched head for a while, everything seems right, pulled each lead off dizzie while running, no real changes. Last thought, check leads at plugs, (Bastard to reach so hadn't got that far.) Seems a flat four runs better with all cylinders firing! 110k out the same road, no drama! o_O

beetleboyjeff wrote:Finally got another set of wheels for my toolbox/trailer to match my car. :-)
What weight would your trailer come in at Jeff and what motor are you running? We're trying to work out a trailer for camping to tow behind the Notch.
Can go up to 700kg unbraked but don't want to kill the old 1600 with to much stress.
beetleboyjeff ·
My trailer isn't that heavy, but with my loaded toolbox in it (as in the photo), it is about 700kgs. I often carry building materials on the top and on the racks, and can often go over 1000kgs. I have a 1916cc engine in the car. The trailer is built on a Type 111 rear suspension, and both the trailer and the back of the bug have Sherman disc brake conversions. The front of the bug has standard superbug discs.
Interestingly, I used the trailer for years without the brakes on it with not too many problems, and really only put them on when I was employing more blokes, and they had utes that struggled with the trailer, especially stopping it in the wet. The rear engine VW is especially good for towing, and tows far better than a front engined car of similar weight & power.

Jeff, this reminds me of when, in the late '60s, I towed my Formula Vee...behind a 1500 Beetle. The trailer had no brakes, and when going down a steep hill, it was important NOT to jump on the brakes! The weight transfer onto the tow-bar tended to lift the Beetle's front wheels clean off the road, making steering impossible.
This happened once, on the way to Bathurst, while going down Mount Victoria...much scarier than the races that weekend. 🤪
wombatventures ·
Cheers Jeff.
Most of the smaller camper units are unbraked and I've towed my work trailer with swag, esky and camping gear with the Notch with no trouble.

Well, I was warned that project cars could get expensive. Dropped all unboltables off to the blasters this morning.

Yeah, I have an 8 pass external cooler mounted above the transaxle. My current 1916 has about 160,000km on it. The car is just about to turn 685,000km, and I reckon has done at least half of that towing the trailer.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hotondo, but when my daughter who was working with me moved onto construction estimating, I didn't want to do it on my own, and my franchise was up for renewal, so after a talk to them, I didn't renew.

Amazing difference what a cooler makes. Pleased to hear you had a positive time with Hotondo. Another franchisee built the house we live in now. Overall, we've been very pleased with it, even if there were a few non-building related dramas at the end.
Speaking of oil, I changed mine last night. Seemed like a good idea after the khanacross. As per usual, I managed to spill oil everywhere. I never learn. Anyhow, it's going again. Calibrated the AFR meter and took it out for a tune just now. Man it goes! 👍

Took my spare alternator down to my auto elec shop today to have it tested before I put it in (read; pull half the motor apart to install it). All good! Shout out to John Dean Auto Electrical in Penrith, NSW. Charged me nothing and always helps me out. If you're local, give him some business. 🙂
Just BTW, replacement regulators are available now from CIP1 for just $32.
This is usually the part that dies so it's a cheap fix for most of our alternators. I'll pickup another one soon and swap it over into the alternator I pull out of the car. Does up to 85amps.

112km each way, mostly straight country road, but with some legal speed corners between Caltowie and Gladtone. Always try to hold the speed limit through the corners just to make the trip fun, its easy in a modern car but tires the arms in the Notch.
