Who holds the fastest lap time at Wakefied Park in an aircooled vw powered vehicle?

sander288 ·

Have to be Rudy in his sports sedan; or Reynold's 1600 vee. I'm leaning towards Rudy

Last year's supersprint results; wayne penrose came out on top

IWL_86 ·

Do you know what times they did?

Wayne Penrose did a 1.09 last year I think?? And that's quick!!

A friend of mine has run a 1.00 flat in his supercharged honda integra type R.

Not exactly aircooled though really!!!! I'm not sure if I've ever heard of a bug or any aircooled vw doing much under what wayne posted except a vee; which technically isn't a vw

Just looking for a base of comparison.

I think that 1.00 range is entirely possible for some of the great builders/drivers on here. 😎

Vee's count as long as its aircooled

Rudi did a 1.06 one year (2011?)

IWL_86 ·

Wow that's super impressive!!! 1600 class?

Turbo sports sedan

Wayne is type 4, Rudy is still running a type 1 isn't he?

Craig Torrens ·

Yep, Rudi is type 1.

I have seen on speed week that commodore VN sixes do 1.09, must come down to driving skill, is this a fair summation.

yeah that class is super competitive very good drivers and more development than a humble vee dub fan! however it should be very attainable to be close to the improved prod times pre turbo days!

matberry ·

Oops, my mistake, turbo type 1, sorry peeps, was thinking mostly about being air cooled, need to plug the brain in next time 😉

HappyDaze ·

Daniel Reynolds has done a 1-07.2.....[naturally aspirated] 1600 F.Vee.

That is a respectable time!!!

I'm aiming for 1.15 mark in my ricer in street trim and semis. Might need some practice at nationals in a volksy!! Hahaha anyone care to lend me a car?? 🤪

Zanello 1.12 .... 1998cc, 10 year old tyres

Great driver, well sorted car..... Becomes a HP race to go under this time in a beetle IMHO

Super1302 ·

Thanks for the dates👍
What sort of HP to get around these sort of times

Thats a good question; my guess would be 130hp (ATW) +

hellbugged ·

yeah you can put 130 hp in a standard 60's beetle.......but it wont do a lap time hey 😉

1.07 for the under 2ltrs pretty rapid! great time that paul did new tyres would drop a few seconds easily. getting close!

hellbugged ·

1.07 ? You've lost me

HappyDaze ·

All this theory proves nothing!

There's only ONE WAY to find out......get down to Wakefield Park on the 25th May.👍

Let me guess, Honda or rx7???

IWL_86 ·

BYP's teg is 2.4 rotrex supercharged.. They are the current FWD record holder at wakefield park.

The car makes 280kw at the wheels.

Craig Torrens ·

What times was CT doing with his 99hp beetle............I thought he was down in the low teens too ?

A vw really is not that competitive these days with these high tech things which u have found out the disappointing way 🙁,lol......

Hondas are stupidly quick and you don't need to spend big on the engines....the one in my class has only a integra engine "black top??" type R cams, type R gearbox, exhaust and tune and it's light years ahead of 75% of the field!!

IWL_86 ·

Hondas are crazy things! My daily is a honda and in stock format makes 100hp per litre in naturally aspirated form.

I dream of the day when a vw can do this. I guess JPM might be getting close......

Pitty you need Kerry Packer's bank balance to achieve it!!

cnfabo ·

Other vw engine builders can make the ponies jpm is, remember there hp is different then ours. Yes he has some amazing products and bummer you need a thick wallet, actually I guy in uk Ian brown is getting a jpm built 1300cc built for his historic beetle, 9000rpm capabilities but will limit it lower for longevity, will be interesting to see if how long it lasts.

As for the Hondas they are fast and I think they can go in there own class🙂

Cheers fabo

Rudie is getting around 300hp at the wheels and he has very big balls to go with it.
