Looks to still have a bit of the pin stripe left on the side?
Is it still original paint?
A few more pics would be great, inside as well.
Not many early Standards around.
Looks like a 63 to me.

the standard Beetles like yours didnt start till late 62 and the 64s had bigger indicators and metal side trim.

Can't wait to see the progress pics.

Turns out its a 63.
The pinstripes are all but worn off. might get them redone later
still the original paint with some vintage brush touch ups. lol
Was stored in a shed by an old lady in Cowra for 20 years after her husband passed away.

It's a standard.. or the pov pack lol. Lack lots of little bits and pieces like glove box lid, chrome trim etc.vw40hp wrote:Would a 63 normally have a fuel tap and not a gauge ?
Very cool 🙂

I'm only doing bolt on mods so I can return it to stock if I want. everything will be easily reversiblevw54 wrote:Keep it as it is

I noticed that. no radio, no mirrors on the outside, one sun visor, rubber floor mats, no moulds and black 1/4 windows. Sure is povo. lol . obviously for the budget minded buyerCanni. wrote:It's a standard.. or the pov pack lol. They did not paint Standards as well as Deluxes so it's rare to see one so clean and rust free.
Looks all original to me.
Does it have the interior light block off plate? I'm not sure from the photo.
Must be later 63 because I've seen one with no hole for the interior light.
Here is a link to a PDF of a 64 Aussie Brochure. Go right to the end and I think its a pic of a 63 Standard like yours when it was new.

There is no cover over the interior light hole in my bug. The brochure is cool. Do you know where I can buy a copy of that brochure.Burrelli wrote:Hell that is good!!

Roll top seats where in later model standards 65-66 I think.Pumba wrote:Should this model standard have roll top seats, the one i had did ???

I cleaned the dizzy up a little with carb cleaner and a rag, I replaced the broken cap and put a new set of points and condenser in.lohoon wrote:Na, cant get enough pics.Looks like the dizzy has had a overhaul. Good score dude.

They wouldn't have been the originals if they were round top seats.Pumba wrote:Mine was a 63 standard,i still have the seats but the car is long gone.Burrelli wrote:Roll top seats where in later model standards 65-66 I think.Pumba wrote:Should this model standard have roll top seats, the one i had did ???
Amazingly we got round top seats at the same time as the rest of the world which was 65.

Just try and make sure you finish what you started , because cost can run up real fast , and a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never to see the road again. 🙁 🥲
good luck.

Have to agree with Ian - Whatever your plan, decide on it and STICK, STICK, STICK to it and you'll never regret it. I do however LOVE the way the bug looks at the moment 🙂
Cheers,
Trevor🙂.

Fortunately i'm not new to projects. made a few mistakes with this one and it won't happen again. I know exactly what I want this timezoofish wrote:Hi there,

I guess it wont look too much different. Just lowered with a set of BRMs on it. Im not that keen on the red wheels and off road tyres. lolzoofish wrote:Hi there,

it wont change much. just lowered with BRMs and new carpet and hood lining. both are falling apart. not touching the paint or panels. I might give it a coat of polish to keep moisture out of the paint. 🙂😵HappyDaze wrote:I have the interior light hole cover for that car......it's yours, if you keep that little beauty looking more or less as is. 👍

Yes,.. but,.. repainted cars are a dime a dozen. It's only original paint once. GO the touch up route.👍vw40hp wrote:this is how you do old school touch ups. A bit of house paint and a brush. Obviously doesn't last like factory paint
Love it that you're only doing 'bolt on' mods to this one.
In my opinion this one is well worth 'preserving' not 'restoring'.
Being rust free like it is,.. you do realize what an excellant car you have i hope.
Being a standard is really nice too. Great bit of Aussie history.
Tarin has a nice one on here that looks just like yours.

I'm keen. Will probably take the bug to the bay soon so a bit of rego and a cruze is on the cards for sure. The pie run looks cool.vwvic wrote:Lovin the pics mate. Car is cool as. Would be keen for a Cruze if you end up at Anna bay.

When I found this old girl I had been looking for a long time. I drove to Deniliquin to look at one that was immaculate. when I got there it had been smashed , the whole thing was brush painted and it died as I drove it out the driveway. not even sure why I bothered to start it up. This one I found on ebay and it didn't sell I rang the guy and picked it up the next day. It was way better than I expected. When I saw it it took me 2 minutes to tell the guy I want it. I intend to keep it the way it is dents and all for now. One day I might restore it but not for now.Carl and Emily wrote:Yes,.. but,.. repainted cars are a dime a dozen. to answer your question from months ago, being a standard it should have a fuel tap not a gauge.
I's rather jealous, it looks like you have basically all of the right standard bits, they aren't easy to find if they are missing. (ask me how I know)
if you get the carpet redone and you want to keep it 100% correct you need to get the bits over the wheel arches made shorter then the normal deluxe kits, as you can see in your pics they finished up the wheel arches at the back of the rear seat backrest.
btw this is my 63 standard. it needs to be totally re polished to look like this again. at the moment it's split from the pan waiting for me to give the pan/running gear some well needed love

mine should be on the road this week.
vw40hp ·
I will have to get it over to Newey for a cruise. might take it over for a run closer to Christmas.
I had to take 100mm out of the rack to make it fit. I still need to extend the legs about 15mm to give it a bit more clearance of the roof.

Its a pretty nice old girl. It was rust free until I found a tiny bit in the left hand door but its pretty minor.
I'm going to lower it a bit so the tyres are just tucked into the guards
HappyDaze ·
Won't take long for the wheels and hub-caps to develop matching patina....just needs a bit of road grime, dust, and dogs' piss to bring them up to scratch.😂
