Time to step up

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/102494/time-to-step-up

andrewmurphy ·

As the word is now out I had better tell everyone what the go is.

Last year at Warwick I ran the red bug and had a blast. It ran a 7.9@85mph. It was on 9 pound boost. Any more and the clutch let loose at 5000 in 2nd gear.

Since then we have fixed the clutch issue (KEP2 needed shimming to get the fingers level) and now it hooks up really well. We added the CB magnaspark efi kit and started to wind up the boost to 14 pound.
I put it on the dyno a few weeks ago and the first run was getting 14 pound at 5k and 240hp at the wheels and still climbing so we backed it off.
2nd run and we wound down the boost and it made 240@7000. Big smiles.....

We then decided to make some changes to the motor to make it more turbo friendly.
The original build was not down with a turbo in mind but still we said what the hey lets put one on....
So we are shimming to take the compression from high 8's to low 8's as well as putting on a methanol/water injection kit.

All the while I am thinking to myself that this car is getting really fast for a full street car that gets driven daily. (Mark drives it to and from work) there is no cage or harnesses.

So I had a choice to make. Either take my street car to the next level or buy a pre-done race car.

I started looking here in aus but not much for sale but there were a few in the US.
My first line of thinking was to get a rail but the logistics were getting too difficult with where we live so I decided that a sedan was for me.
That is when I found Doug's aka dougzilla's car. It was an opportunity to get into a proven car so I took it. After a bunch of phone calls and emails it was decided and off we go.....

It will take me a while to get the most out of the car. It is a pretty big step up for me so I will be working my way up to the full potential.

Great read and pics cheers.
What size cc is your 240hp currently? Great job

andrewmurphy ·

2275 but I am dropping compression so hp will go down. Hopefully around 200

tar76 ·

👍👍

ian.mezz ·

USA cars are great , some ones done all the hard yards building and racing and the new owners just have to work their way up to the fast times ahead, we are more then happy with or recent USA buy. cheap and easy to ship to Oz,
Looking forward to checking your new buy out at warwick 😊

vw54 ·

Andrew

I just FIXED the pic of your red bug

vw54 ·

Nice buy did you buy it turn key ???

andrewmurphy ·

Lol it's upside down now!!!

Indeed I did. It's going to be mostly ready to race. I will need to get ANDRA technical inspection and then get some practice

vw54 ·

it aint on mine refresh your screen

Craig Torrens ·

Congrats Andrew......its great to see all these quick US cars making there way to Oz

humpty ·

Its got a centre drive pos right? How will that go down with ANDRA?
Good score by the way Andrew.

andrewmurphy ·

The only rule for seating is the SS section is that it has to have a drivers seat (der)
In the general rules it states "all seats must be positioned to provide the driver with adequate forward vision"
I also showed the photos to an ANDRA technical guy at the winter nationals and he couldn't see anything that would be an issue.
But thanks for the concern....

dangerous ·

Yes back in the days I began racing, Super Sedan Class required the seat to be offset,
but a recent look in the rule book shows that that rule no longer exists.
(Gone to the bin with the 'no welded diffs' rule)

If it did, there would be no reason you couldn't off set the seat 5mm,
since back then it said "no centre seating" but there was no tolerance listed, haha.

Your only challenge Andrew will be to master the left window winder. ( 😉 Rose)

andrewmurphy ·

Dave I think I might have more than just a window winder as a challenge........
🤓🤓

dangerous ·

You'll be fine.

ian.mezz ·

our friend adam also has a 10sec USA beetle will be good to see how adam goes with the lefty at sydney 😊
that will make about 7 leftys now.

SuperOwen ·

I haven't found the LHD gearshift to be an issue on mine, but going to step on the brake pedal to find it doesn't have one can be a bit unnerving 😂

Congrats on the buy anyway, looks like a great proven setup.

andrewmurphy ·

cheers everyone.... more pics

SuperOwen ·

Reckon it will be back in time for warwick?

andrewmurphy ·

I hope so. It will depend on the sea freight duration.
The importer says 4-6 weeks from pick up. Hopefully the car will be ready for pick up mid July.
Doug is getting some work done at the moment and I am getting some parts delivered to Doug over the next couple of weeks.
So hopefully it will be here in early September. Then through September get the car inspected and a couple test and tunes done.
Even if I can't race the car I will try to take the car if its here.

Stanley ·

Looking forward to seeing you and the car at Willowbank and of course Warwick if it pans out.
You'll have a ball with it Andrew.

lou0060 ·

MurphZilla??

looking forward to seeing all these LHD cars at Sydney and Warwick....

Dougzilla ·

Murphzilla! LOL! I like it

andrewmurphy ·

Everyone meet Doug AKA Dougzilla!

humpty ·

Welcome Doug.... Andrew has picked up a fine car there, and we are all looking forward to its arrival... Hopefully ill be able to make the flight to Warwick again this year to check it out in person...

Sick68VW ·

yup good idea.
we used Vintage Autohaus Usa in , California to move our vw to shipping and Fabien help with the parts pick ups.😊
we got lots a extra VW stuff,2 sets of wheels, slicks, axle, struts , wheelie bars etc with our car and Main freight didn't charge any extra freight 😊

I've been bolting Andrews new car back together with the fresh Autocraft trans. Taking my time and cleaning everything as it goes back together. Car looks great for a 20+ year old paint job! Car will be race ready when Andrew receives it. It's not too hard to get used to. Just think of it as that WILD girlfriend we all used to have. Gotta be ready for anything but it's worth it for the thrill!
Car goes straight when you line up in the groove. On the board in my trailer is written: IF CAR DOES NOT GO STRAIGHT...LIFT!!!!!!! Words to live by right there.
The car never frightened me because I've been divorced 3 times AND audited by the IRS. My third pass in the heap was a 6.49 1/8 mile and I lifted at 1000' for a 10.61.
I know the car will perform well for you Andrew. I know you will enjoy it! Your competition better look out for Murphzilla!

andrewmurphy ·

Getting closer to shipping. Just needing the spare tires to turn up.........

What was your personal best times with the car ? I remember when Kevin was building it , always liked that car. Mike McCarthy

dangerous ·

Yes it is a good looking car hey Mike!
Love the curved windscreen and early nose!
If Andrew can make the most of the current power, perhaps later we can try another 30 or so. 😉

andrewmurphy ·

Losing a pound or 2 might work too.

fish26 ·

Congrats Andrew, the car looks awesome.

I would love to see this next to Brad's Junka

Dougzilla ·

Car weight is a secret, but we do add some to be Pro Stock legal.

nbturbo ·

I remember seeing a pic of the car in Hot VWs- April 2013 - page 30.

andrewmurphy ·

car prep'd and ready for packing

1916baja ·

Wow man, you must be so excited!

SuperOwen ·

Sweet, is it a steel or glass body?

hypo-vw ·

I love the way the top door frames are integrated into the roof structure Andrew ...... cant wait to see you run it here in OZ !!

andrewmurphy ·

SuperOwen wrote:Sweet, is it a steel or glass body?
Thanks.
Steel body most other parts are fibreglass or ally.

andrewmurphy ·

hypo-vw wrote:I love the way the top door frames are integrated into the roof structure Andrew ...... cant wait to see you run it here in OZ !!
There are a few things that make this a pretty unique car.... Centre driving position being one.....

I was originally looking for a rail as there wasn't any running here at the time.....
I had to change my mind when someone decided to bring one in! I won't mention any names.😂

Dougzilla ·

I loaded Andrews new car on the trailer this morning. It is on it's way. Y'all are in trouble now.
Murphy's Law will reign!. I predict a 10.60 on his third pass.

Dougzilla ·

Did the car make it onto the boat today Andrew?

andrewmurphy ·

The car is going through USA customs at the moment and will be loaded for a ship that leaves late this week. 30 days later it should be here.
I estimate second week of September.

Dougzilla ·

Andrew tell me the car is scheduled to arrive September 6. Car is race ready except he needs to put the header and wheelie bars back on.
Oil is fresh, valves are set. Put some fuel in it and head to the track for some seat time! 10psi in the slicks, 28psi up front.
Go get em' Andrew!

humpty ·

👍👍

andrewmurphy ·

Finally got a confirmed delivery date from the importer. The 6th was the earliest possible.
The ship is due the 13th and allowing a couple of working days for it to clear customs I should be able to pick it up on the 18th.

Stanley ·

Good news

dangerous ·

hypo-vw ·

andrewmurphy wrote:a bit of work was done over the weekend to get the car prepared for Warwick
Are you sure you actually worked on the car on the weekend Andrew ? by the look of that deck-chair in the garage I dont think sitting for hours staring at it qualifies as work . Lol 😂😂 but if it was in my garage mate , I would do just that !! Well done again 👍👍

Dougzilla ·

I sat in my garage and stared at it for hours.....Waiting for the chance to run it again!
It is a very nice car. I am glad Andrew owns it.

20bkombi ·

Very nice Andrew, I'm getting excited to see you run at Warwick,

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Very nice car indeed Andrew!! Enjoy Warwick!!

Dougzilla ·

Andrew made some passes in the heap Saturday. It's fast as well as beautiful. Murphy's Law will be ready for Warwick.

dangerous ·

Got a text to say he had run some 10's and got his licence signed off!

Well done dude!
Huge achievement to do that on the first pass!

andrewmurphy ·

I did 3 full passes.
First full pass was a 10.95@120.57
Second was 11.59@110.85 - trouble getting into third with my right hand
Third run was 11.24@111.22 - was focusing on technique.

matberry ·

Awesome news, well done Andrew and the new 'Murphys Law' ...love it!

nasty ·

Awesome! Another 10sec NA car.

hypo-vw ·

great news Andrew , and congrats on your first outing .... BTW , I dont know how anybody could shift into 3rd with their right hand , its just not natural . lol

cant wait to see you run 'Murphys Law' at Warwick .....

lou0060 ·

Great news on a successful first outing. Looks like its all set for Warwick. Did you run with the hp110 on these runs?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Oh well at least you didn't go for the window winder Andrew like someone else with a LHD car did and got video to prove it lol

andrewmurphy ·

Thanks for the comments guys. Been busy with trailer issues and work......
Can't wait for Warwick.

westi ·

i didn't get a good chance to pop over and say hi.but i did get to watch a few runs.
it looked pretty good.
straight off the trailer ,what a great car.you must be happy.

andrewmurphy ·

Best run was the last run. I had great traction and I shifted fairly well.
RT - 0.074
60 foot - 1.472
1/8 - 6.841
MPH - 100.45

I had the chance to chat with troy(?) about your car. Great work.

Menangler ·

Good to meet you on the weekend, You have a nice car there, you must be happy with it, it was great to watch.
