Hi
On showing my local supplier a picture of my wipers she said 'good luck trico don't make these any more' - seems my Australian made 67 bug uses wiper blades that are 255mm long and the ones they sell on the net are, she said 'for ovals and are too short'
I don't want to convert 'new blades' to fit - has anyone found an aftermarket supplier for this size blade or used the 245mm blades (1958-64) instead - can 10mm make that much difference?
Trying to keep as much of the original stuff on the car as i can (Wiper arms) is proving quite difficult - finding out what year parts are on this bug has already been much fun and buying of wrong parts... 馃お
Thanks in advance
Wend

ahh Les i just saw your reply - I ordered replacements from VVW they had the right size they get them from USA and have a slightly different look apparently have their own screw that comes with them but they fit on the Aussie wiper arm - they were pretty pricey but hey what isn't - I'll look for the whitworth site - i'm pretty sure I'll need them again in the future and your link is very probably a much cheaper option 馃檮 - now apparently i have to find something to replace the bush in the wiper motor that keeps the tiny circlip on the end (interesting drive home from the welders in the rain with first time used dodgy wiper blades and then no wipers!!! and I love it when people in the know say "just use anything" cause i have ZERO idea of what is under there and what the missing bit looks like 馃槀 annnnnooother learning curve courtesy of vw

Hi Wend,
I may have a new spindle assy for the wipers. I assume that the spindle keeps slipping back when the arm is fitted due to the circlip being rusted or the shaft is worn. This is quite common.I will be away for a few days but will try to post a few pics when I get back.
Cheers Les

Hi Les
photos are always good I'd appreciate that - I'm not quite sure about the spindle assembly that sounds very plausable - when i saw my mechanic he said the bush must have come off - the bug is going back in to check heater situation next week so he'll have a look then for me then - clip looked fine (luckily we did keep finding it - son eventually bit it enough to hold it on for the last stretch - (i know i know i've already had the looks from my friends for daring to go anywhere in a vw without my toolkit...馃榿 ) - if i need the wiper assy I'll get back to you and see if you've got it
hellbugged - we stopped at one point in a garage and the whole instruction process of application of rainex they sold - 'make sure the windscreen is dry wax on wax off etc' was a little precious in the circumstances i opted for coffee and chocolate by that point - but I think it's going to have to go on given the 'toy like' wipers on the car anyway 馃檪

I came across some nos trico wiper blades and arms that I think are the early beetle shape, not sure if the rubber will still be ok though but the arms are obviously fine. The type with the small screw hole in the end of the arm.
This is awwesome, there is one of these marine shops just 10 mins away from me - my drivers side blade just fell apart 3 days ago 馃槉

Hi Wend, sorry I just came across your reply I will post the pics for you but on re reading it I think I have misinterpreted what you are after. Is it the plastic bush in the linkage that has worn or the bushing the wiper motor body? I also have a couple of wiper motor/linkage assemblies.
Cheers Les

Hi guys
Update - the blades we got fit but the screw provided with them was too big for the wiper arm so we used the original screws - the mechanic replaced the bush or whatever it's called that keeps the circlip on the end of the wiper motor shaft (lol hope i'm explaining bits properly..) anyhow when we put the new blades on one of them didn't reach the window and we noticed that there was some kind of cylindrical washer on the other one that wasn't on the one that didn't reach - (between the body and the arm itself) arggh i will learn to post pictures on here and that will be better explanation i think - as for replacing rubber i will have to give it a go the metal strip on the original wiper looks pretty tight around the rubber but did notice that yes the rubber was useless on the original ones compared to the new blades - i think the wiper assembly is all good Les it was just that the circlip kept falling off and disengaging the shaft and the arm they do actually go and stop now 馃榾 radial can you let me know if it's the go replacing the rubber how difficult it is to fit in there thanks - pfillery thanks for the offer maybe someone else needs them at the moment i think we're good (always crossing fingers...)

This is the wiper arm with the extra washer or whatever on
This one is missing it (above the nut to the body) which allows the shaft to come away from the glass when its on - we've tightened the nuts on this side and underneath but presume the extra bit is important..
This is the new wiper blade
and this is the original one

seems i posted both the same pics - no edit post so sorry.. this one is missing the second washer thing..

On the plus side my heaters work!!! (massive excitement due to kombi heaters not working and only ever worked through one summer where i couldn't switch them off and it was 50deg in there - course first week of that winter they stopped working again haha)
hellbugged 路
The plastic bit missing is just a seal
In that shaft there should be a circlip to stop it going back into the body ( ie threaded part)

Oh my new blades like yours rusted really quickly 馃檨馃憥

Hi Wend there is a rubber grommet missing ,it fits in the panel before the spindle is fitted, there is also a small plastic cap that fits onto the shaft to stop water enry into the shaft. They are available from Vintage, take the wiper arms off, undo the outer nuts and the motor mounting then slip the spindle back one at a time, fit the grommet and slide the spindle back in place then do the other side, refit the motor in place and nip the outer nut up. There is usually about 3-4mm of thread showing when tight, sometimes the inner nut has been adjusted to try to get the spindle tight and may need resetting.Cheers Les

the rubber grommets on the body work and the plastic caps are available new

Thanks guys haha i forgot the word grommet what a cool word... I will source the parts and have a go - thanks for the info and Les thanks for the instructions - hellbugged what do you treat them with? (scuse my ignorance..) who would have known such a little part of the bug would be so bitty - onwards and onwards to roadworthy!!..

Don't forget to disconnect the battery first Wend as there are a couple of hot wires close to the wiper motor and a flash will scare the living daylights out of you and it's no fun replacing burnt wiring.馃お馃憤

Hi guys more questions on the wipers - just got new wiper arms fixed because the blades weren't hitting the window got home tested them they swiped about 5 times then stopped - the back of the switch was spinning but nothing was happening - hmm then after a bit of fiddling they worked again - banging and clanking at the top before returning - 1st and 2nd pics - is this something to do with the 12v conversion (the white rectangles with the wires coming out - which attach to the wiper switch) and should it be super hot when we were turning the wipers on and off?
and why are the wipers returning to this position?
any ideas? i am so over these wipers already!!
Thanks in advance
whatnowthistime 路
has your car been converted to 12V? that looks like a resistor (?) to run a 6V wiper motor on 12V. if it is then, yes it will get hot.
just to be a total pain, i'm fairly sure your car (if it is an australian built 6V car) should have different wiper arms. 馃槀
if you want to do away with the resistor, you can fit the armature out of a certain vintage Volvo 244 wagon rear motor into your 6V unit (search the 58-67 forum at www.thesamba.com for specifics) or you can fit a '68model (and possibly other years) 2 speed motor into your wiper frame. with a little fiddling you can run the later 2 speed switch without hacking your dash too.

Wendy was the arm from the motor hitting the stereo as it came round? If so this will stall the motor or if the nut is loose the shaft will spin in the arm.You may have to shim the rear mounting bracket to get clearance to the stereo.

After all that trying to get the wipers to work - grounded because the wipers didnt work .. we (as in the mechanic) got them to work - when he told me that one of them (brand new wiper arms remember...) flew off while he was testing them and he had to weld it i kind of had a giggle... so for the first time in a while i took the bug out in the rain and had to use the wipers - i dont think it was 10mins really and the other wiper arm decided to do the same thing
wasn't really laughing given the weather 馃槩 emergency surgery to move the passenger wiper to the driver side ...
xerxes 路
If anyone knows some GOOD quality wiper arms... open to suggestions...
BUGBOY 路
Those arms are not the correct ones for your car, but they should work. looks like the grub screw has come loose in the end. Its it damaged I have lots of wiper parts.
xerxes 路
Hey Bugboy
No they're not the right ones you are correct 馃榾 the originals i had were stuffed i seem to remember something wrong with the springs in them they weren;t holding the wiper blades close to the windscreen - these were replacement arms i got that are supposedly ok for the car - they do work (for 10mins anyway..) but they don't do a very good job of taking the water off the windscreen - but i think some nut had come loose, my mechanic welded the other one - i will search out some 'new' originals and see if they work any better so if you have wiper arms for sale i'd be happy to buy them off you it's a 67 aussie so most parts are 64 or before 馃檪

Hi, I can help with blades as I have no use for my new ones(I have a german built 67, different again..馃お).
Since I don't own an Aussie 60's beetle, they are available.
I think I have NOS arms floating around too...I don't really look for 60's aussie beetle bits, but grab them when decent parts come up. If not NOS, a really nice set that would have not seen a car in 40 years(old dealer stock). As below, I have a few available(I buy in bulk!!馃槀), Aussie beetle Trico blades!;
