Nice pictures, looks like you are getting stuck into it.
Good luck, lot of potential there.
Rob.

As Steve said best model bug they made.
Looks like its had accident repairs on the RH side and front and whoever did the paint just painted straight over the top of the old paint on the bonnet and side and didn't even primer that RH front guard.
Dalyrics6 ·
thanks guys for the replys, i am getting stuck into it as much as i can at the moment and the paint has been painted over and not primed... but i am hoping it will turn out alright in the end!
Bizarre ·
Nice
What are the C pillars like?
Great model
A few tweaks to the suspension and you will be smiling 👍
Dalyrics6 ·
As far as I know they seem to be in fairly decent condition... Not alot of rust on the whole car either, only a few small patches and the front guard.
Craig Torrens ·
looks like a great project 👍
Dalyrics6 ·
Anyone know where i can buy an Oil Filter for it? its a 1600?
1303Steve ·
They don't have an oil filter, only a washable strainer
Dalyrics6 ·
Thankyou! i tryed to tell my relatives that but they wouldnt belive me haha...
Thanks again

Mate i have some coil overs for this pm mé if yo want more info

Doesnt get much simpler than this

Until you buy yourself some manuals, save this link and start reading
I'm a fan of German look for this model car. But its your car, so do what is going to please you.

Thinking of a resto with abit of hotting up, super bug spoiler and making it more like a race style, original hubs spoiler lowers a tad and sports exhaust ext. Also planning on running white walls, anyone know Much about white wall inserts?
At the moment though the goal is to get her running, fix the paint, clean the interior and get the breaks working! Then will be getting her on the road haha... Going to be a good project!
Dalyrics6 ·
Thinking of knocking one of these together sometime after shes on the road... basic speaker box however you don't loose space for storage like i know a lot of people do... this is just a rough un-measured model of what i am hoping to build, will get measurements soon and maybe post blueprints (seeing as there are none on the internet) haha.
any thoughts on it?
Dalyrics6 ·
in the next I month or so i am hoping to clean up the engine, replace all fuel lines, replace the fuel filter and fuel, change the spark plugs, change the oil, clean the oil strainer, do something with that front guard, clean out the interior, remove the flacky paint from the rims and give them a respray (not hub caps) maybe get my new tyres (if funds are available) same as a new exhaust from: classicveedub.com.au, clean the windows from the inside, clean out the trunk, connect the battery up, and hopefully get her running 😵💫 I also need to take a look at those brakes :/ handbrake is fine but the others need some attention...
This may not go as quick as I hope... But a goal is in place haha
Anything i may have missed?
Dalyrics6 ·
Hey guys, last night i decided i would drain the oil from the bug, i then left it drip overnight, cleaned the strainer and plate this morning, reassembled it all, added some oil (going to flush it soon), replaced the spark plugs and replaced some fuel lines and put some high octane fuel in it. i then connected a battery however it too low on power (old battery i had) so we jump started it, it took a while as to be expected from a vehicle that hasn't run in 16 years but eventually got it running. it has a pretty good tone to it as it is and i will upload a video soon.
Cheers,

It's a Beetle, they go forever and ever! 🙂
Dalyrics6 ·
Haha that they do 🙂
So excited... (my first car)
Dalyrics6 ·
hey guys, i took the front bumper and indicators out today as well as the headlights with the hope that i could remove the front guard (rusty one) however i don't know how to remove the headlight cables as the plugs on the end are bigger then the hole, anyone know how to get around this or do i have to cut the cables?
Cheers,
Matthew Vandenbelt
1303Steve ·
Hi
You need to release the tangs on the terminals in the block so that the terminals push out of the block, some people cut them of and resolder them on later.
Steve
Bizarre ·
1303Steve wrote:, some people cut them of and resolder them on later.
Or use a connector strip for later removal
Dalyrics6 ·
Thanks guys, much appreciated, also what colour rim gloss black or matt black? I can't make my mind up and they will be with original hubcaps
Dalyrics6 ·
I have decided to go with the gloss black rims and have used killrust after using a wire brush to remove all the old paint and rust.
also i have bought some rust converter to work on the front guard with, i will then prime it and hopefully get it painted.
oldskoolguy ·
I love black rims 😎
Rob
Dalyrics6 ·
Today i finally removed the headlight plugs thanks to Steve. cheers
i removed the front guard, changed my newly painted rim and as i was putting my spare on the back end, i noticed a huge (really big) puddle of oil on the shed floor... i thought my gasket failed after i changed it when i did the oil, but thats not the case... i think i blew a rear main seal... 🙁
oh well... an excuse to clean up the engine and engine bay...
Paulc1964au ·
Just read your thread, good luck with the resto, based on my experience whatever your budget is double it lol. I read earlier that you should get the car running then do bits and pieces as you go that's exactly what i have done and found it very rewarding, you can click on my link in my signature to my 69 bug.
different owners have different views on what you should do, I have always listened to advice but in the end it's your car do what you want thats why no Beetle looks the same.
Look forward to seeing your progress
Dalyrics6 ·
Thanks Mate, I have also read majority of yours, looking good 🙂
Thought i'd post i pic of the oil leak
Also I have an old bonnet (rear hood) that is fairly rusty and 2 old bumpers, one is OK but the other is a little rusty also. I Also Have a Front Guard that is rough but should be able to fix hopefully (no promises) Giving them away other wise i will just scrap them. PM if interested...
Today i cleaned the Tyre well out, cleaned a few rust patches and used some rust converter as well as swap another painted rim over. i will be getting the necessary equipment tomorrow to clean up the oil. Also checked my air filter... tad bit stuffed : haha just a touch...
Internet is playing up so i will add the other pictures later
Dalyrics6 ·
Does anyone know where I can get a new hub cap? One of mine has a huge rust hole through it :/ unrepairable
Dalyrics6 ·
Just disassembled the front disk brakes. removed the pads and for some weird reason, 3 pads look dirty, but almost brand new, not really worn, but one of them looks stuffed, there is not really any thing left of it??? anyone else had a similar issue?
Going to replace the rubber brake lines ASAP as well as all new brake pads... $86 deliverd to my door, no arguing with that...
1303Steve ·
Sounds like your pistons are sticking, time to give the callipers a birthday
Dalyrics6 ·
haha yeah it does abit :P
Dalyrics6 ·
Does anyone have the issue of not being able to upload a single picture, because the file is to big???
i havent been able to upload because of this :
Dalyrics6 ·
just got all the money up for my brakes 🙂
buying them this week
Dalyrics6 ·
So I got my rear drum shoes on last night, now I have to change my lines and swap my brake pads over, bought disk pads on eBay and got sent 4wd ones... Swapping this week.
I have also disconnected (labeled) all the wires running to the engine as I have realized I have blown a main seal 🙁 whole engine out, to replace it...
Bizarre ·
Dalyrics6 wrote:Does anyone have the issue of not being able to upload a single picture, because the file is to big???
i havent been able to upload because of this :
Yeah - you have to get the pics down to 150kb or so
Otherwise just sign up for www.photobucket.com and host your pics there for free and click the link
Gimme an email if you are having trouble
Dalyrics6 ·
Thanks, may take a while but I'll get there eventually :p
So I have changed all my taillight bulbs, cleaned all my seats and vacummed the whole car. I am in the process of removing the engine but the last nut (behind the engine up top) is a little tight so I'm just spraying it with wd40 a few times and leaving it to soak in...
Dalyrics6 ·
Finally after ages of waiting I got the time and money to get all new engine gaskets, main seal and socket for the flywheel... Got the engine out and now I'm having troubles removing the flywheel nut. Anyone know how to remove this? I have tried using a breaker bar with a steel tube to make it even longer and yet even with my dad standing on it it wouldn't crack, I don't have access to an impact wrench either.
I also got my brake pads and shoes assembled however my brake pedal and master cylinder need replacing :/
Bizarre ·
get a LONG bit of 2" angle and drill 2 holes in it so as you can bolt it to the fly wheel
That will act as a "brake" on the fly wheel turning while you use the breaker bar on the nut
They are worth their weight in gold, will also do the hub nuts when you get to them.. get some pics up mate! 👍
Dalyrics6 ·
Thanks for the reply's guys, I currently don't have enough money for the gadget and can't wait as the car must be running in 3 months, however I shall try the 2" angle, I have just spent today cleaning and respraying my exhaust in mat black engine enamel and will post pics as soon as I can, I also am having a hard time trying to find a master cylinder for a RHD vw 1303/super beetle, the cheapest I can find is $150 anyone know where I can find one cheaper?
Will try to keep up the posts.
Once again thanks for the replies, I really appreciate them.

i need:
The Master Cylinder $280

looks .like a fare bit of saving to do... 😢 then again, i did by a beetle to do this haha
Dalyrics6 ·
Removed the flywheel, replaced the main seal and painted the components...

I am seriously thinking of painting my Door trims and my seats black with Dupli-Color Vinyl Paint, Anyone else tried this? i don't have a lot of money at the moment and think it will be a cheap solution to buying new one's.
Scottkombi ·
Vinyl paint is amazing stuff - I have paited a few steering wheels with it (2 bay kombis) and it looks awesome and has yet to fade or get sticky even on hot sweaty days.
Definately worth a try.
beetleboyjeff ·
I have used it on sections of my door cards, and it is very good, but after about 5 years of quite heavy use, it is wearing off in places.
Dalyrics6 ·
Thanks for the reply's, I am thinking of painting just the door cards for the time being and seeing how it looks before I try the seats, however I am not sure on how many cans to buy? How many cans did you use Jeff? Also my cards are bent up at the bottom corners after being left in direct sunlight for the past 16 years,is there a way to fix tthis? I was thinking of using a heat gun to heat it to the point of flexing them. Or should I just buy new ones?
Thanks.
Dalyrics6 ·
Example
Dalyrics6 ·
Drivers side isn't to bad...
beetleboyjeff ·
I made up custom door cards & had them trimmed in Black Vinyl. I have then fitted door pockets on them, which is what I painted black - I only used 1 can to do it all, but prep. it VERY well.
This is the front door card setup, with a large open pocket, a pocket with a door, a courtesy light at the front, and a 'clearance' light in the VW emblem at the back -
And this is the rear card setup, which just has a pocket on it.
I hope this gives you the idea.
Dalyrics6 ·
That looks really good. I may have to try somthing similar later on. Also what sort of car are those rear seats from? They look really comfortable.
beetleboyjeff ·
They are the original rear seats from my car - I just re-did them.
The old upholstery was shot, so I stripped them down to the frame. I then got a pair of old front seat backs that had adjustable head rests, stripped them down, cut out the frame section I needed, and had them welded into my old seat back.
The bloke that did my interior then worked some magic on them to make them look good.
Dalyrics6 ·
They look amazing haha great job!
I have another question at the moment... My transmission is leaking in multiple places... I will upload pictures however, is this an easy fix for a beginner? Or should I get it professionally rebuilt? Also what would it cost to rebuild it my self vs a general price for a mechanic to do so?
Dalyrics6 ·
I was in the process of installing my Engine after replacing the Main Seal however i am having difficulties with lining the transmission shaft up? i have the engine supported by a trolley jack sitting half on the shaft however it seems as if somthing is stopping the engine from sliding all the way onto it. Can any one please help? i dont want to break anything.
Thanks
beetleboyjeff ·
You may not have the splines lined up. Grab the fan belt and turn it around slightly to see if that will line up the splines.
Bizarre ·
and it needs to go in straight
remember you are at a bit of an angle
Dalyrics6 ·
Had to relocate the bug today, at least it's now closer to home.
And as the engine I am still having difficulty installing it, I have however ordered a clutch allignmdnt tool as I didn't have one but was told they are a good thing to have
beetleboyjeff ·
Ooh yeah. If you don't have it aligned properly, it will be a big struggle.
Dalyrics6 ·
yeah haha, i never thought about getting one as this is my first engine install. But after finding out the hard way i think its best to get it, it was only cheap to so even if it don't work (even though it will) its still worth a shot.
Dalyrics6 ·
What is Required for me to lower my 75 superbug? and how much would it cost to do so?
1303Steve ·
Hi
there are several different ways to do it.
Have your stock springs compressed, cheap
Have the lower spring seats cut off and welded lower, a bit dearer
Or go skinny adjustable struts which then allows you to use wider wheels on the front. can get expensive
Nor sure about costs, it depends a lot on your ability to do things yourself
Steve
Dalyrics6 ·
Thankyou, I have heard of a place that sells the adjustable struts for around $300. I am then going to buy a spring compressor and change them myself.
Dalyrics6 ·
Hey guys, i realize its been a while since i last posted so here is a bit of an update...
Got the engine running again after replacing the main seal that was shredded when i started it for the first time in 16 years.
Moved the location of the bug a little closer to home as my grandmother moved house, only downfall is there is no garage at the new place 🥲
purchased a nice set of rims off a dubber from this forum.
purchased all the paint required for a full respray, just awaiting nice weather for a backyard spray job haha.
purchased all window seals, taillights, headlight bulbs, windscreen wipers, a set of golf mk1 indicators, accelerator pedal, accelerator, clutch and bonnet cables, bonnet handle (you'll find out why shortly), factory exhaust and heater channels, front rotors, rear drums, master cylinder, battery, guard seals, sound system, ect ect.
Soooo... i had to replace the bonnet handle as i had a small incident after my brother decided to idle the bug forward rather then push it... shortly to realize cars don't stop without brakes... at about 2km/h it gently pushed itself against his bull bar of his Toyota Land-cruiser... which didn't even scratch his car... but not so lucky on mine... it pushed the whole bonnet in, bent the chrome and broke the front handle.
since then the bonnet has been panel beaten back out and resprayed looking almost better then before.
i have literally parts laying all over the house. In the Shed, Back door step, Lounge room, Piles of boxes in the bedroom and whats in the car... i am so keen to get out and put it all on but there's a lot to do before then.
what else?
i have purchased a new Dash mat and had 'poppy' embroidered into it as my grandfather helped me to get the car before he passed away from cancer. this is the reason the car means a whole lot more to me.
If all goes to plan then she'll be back on the road before christmas this year. i'll try to update a little bit more often and will add some photos shortly.
Thanks guys!

I like them too, might have to look at widening the guards though, they stick out a little bit far... Which gives me the excuse
Willie ·
I like the dash mat and indicators. Can you share where you got them from, please.
Cheers,
W.
Dalyrics6 ·
Sure Willie, Sorry i took a while to get back to you, haven't had much time till recently.
The Dash mat I Had custom made through SuperCheapAuto Belive it or not, i think it was about $80??? they had a separate company complete it for me.
The Indicators Were from Vw Heritage in the UK, They are made for early Golfs but fit the beetle no problem. link Below.
