The plan is a fairly mild rat...- cheaper that way!
Have done all the electrics...
Its just been converted to 12 V.
1300 Removed...
1776 Engine going in soon.
In the photo, it shows the brightness of the 6V Bulbs (candles!!)
Awesome interior...

Today i did a bit more....
I cleaned out the gearbox - amazing what you can do when you use your elbow grease!! Before and After pics are there
I will be putting new gearbox mounts on later...
I also pulled out the fuel tank, will be repainting it... RED!!
Will also be putting new tie rods in!
And will be putting new brake fluid bottle in..
Am grinding out gearbox this week end.
After Gearbox grindout, the gearbox will be cleaned again, and 1776 engine will be put in...
fish26 ·
Looking good mate
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Mate. Will try and keep everyone posted. Does anybody know where you can get VIN Plate replacements?
ragged ·
1966 vehicles were not fitted with vin plates! Dave
adlbeetle66 ·
OK. How funny! Mine seems to... you can see it below and to the left a bit of the brake fluid bottle!
adlbeetle66 ·
Another Update:
Gearbox Mounts have been put in. Gearbox has been ground. New Pressure plate with collar type has been purchase and fitted. Fuel Tank has been sanded back to metal nearly all over. Has been sprayed with primer. Been sanded back with wet sandpaper. Ready for final coat of primer. Also removed firewall insulation and prepared area for new one.
hellbugged ·
Good stuff
Clearancing gearbox went ok?
adlbeetle66 ·
Yep. Too easy. Did the whole thing with 2 X 60 Grit Emery Flapper Wheels.
adlbeetle66 ·
Did a bit more:
Fuel tank painted and installed.
New Firewall insulation kit installed.
New engine bay seal installed.
New throw out bearing installed.
New J Pipes and Extractors With Single Glass Pack Exhaust installed.
The engine is turning and working but is having fuel problems to sort out now...
adlbeetle66 ·
Lookin Good!
adlbeetle66 ·
Got a new fuel pump in and all is well.
Just needs a good tune - any tips?
beetle_nut ·
Is that your fuel filter in the engine bay near your dizzy area.I'd be moving that mate.I run mine where they come out under the car near the gear box.
adlbeetle66 ·
Yeah. Was thinking of doing that, but its not under any pressure so it doesn't really matter. But i suppose you can't be too careful!?
adlbeetle66 ·
Another update.
I have put on my new bumpers and given them a good polish.
My front end has been pulled apart, and thanks to fellow Dubbers, i have successfully installed drop spindles, new King and Link pins, new bump stops, new tie rods and new shock absorbers all around.
I have bought some 15 X 6inch Widened Rims to go on the rear too!

More updates coming soon!!
adlbeetle66 ·
Did a bit more on the Beetle, as it was raining, so no outside activity 🥲
I ground back the Decklid for rust repair asap. Found that it was full of half a ton of bog! 🤪
Also, got the back bumper on, all the dents work perfectly for the Original Classic rat! 😎
The number plates were on just for looks, makes me feel closer to the day when they are bolted on for rego! 😁
56oval resto ·
lookin good...
your front nudges on the bumper are a different look , they normally sit on the outer sides......
bushed ·
I used to have double set toprotect the front more
inner& outer lol
lunar_c ·
Sweet job mate. That's next on my list .. It looks like a 4wd at the moment.
adlbeetle66 ·
Yeah, done that for the looks.. I reckon it looks better that way 😁
Would do the double bars if it had the towel rails, but i took them off too!
Looks so much better down low.. can stop smiling 😂
ptjcmaavw ·
Thats mad mate! What tool did you use for the decklid?
I was thinking of using a wire brush on a drill?
Keep up the good work! Cheers 👍👍😁
adlbeetle66 ·
Yep. That's how i did it! 👍
You can buy a bulk pack from Bunnings for about $12 from memory.
Worked a treat 👍
adlbeetle66 ·
Well, another small update here...
I dropped my Decklid at a mates, he will re-weld and repair for me.
Have cut out my dash to cater for a SAAS 3 3/4in Tacho....
Turned out really nice. 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Got the hidden shift light all hooked up! Looks and works great! 😉😁
adlbeetle66 ·
Also, I don't think I had mentioned earlier, I have a pile of MPH to KMPH stickers for sale, I have one on my bug.. Keeps it looking old and stock...
The aim of the look of my car is to be on original old granny looking car, just a tad lower, fatter wheels on the back, and go like a rocket. 😂
Dibsy ·
Tacho looks great mate,
remind me to buy a couple of your speedo transfers off you when I see you next !
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Mark.
OK. Might come down your way soon ~ can bring a couple down ~ need anything 😂?
adlbeetle66 ·
Pulled the dizzy out to bolt the weber down nice and tight and found that the thread is stripped. So will have to deal with that when i can. 😬
In the mean time, we have the car up on stands and we are replacing the front and rear slave cylinders, rear shocks, and rear wheel bearings.
adlbeetle66 ·
Also cleaned up behind the dashboard.. fastened the tacho nicely behind so i doesn't fall out, then my brother cleaned up all the wiring 😎
adlbeetle66 ·
Painted the handbrake lever to look nice, and got some new cables ready to put in as the old ones have both snapped! 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
Slave cylinders...
Off with the old... on with the new 😀
adlbeetle66 ·
Just a matter of doing the handbrake cables now...
Hope fully its not too hard...🥲
Oh.. and the wheel bearings 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
Got my 15 X 6 wheels out to get them painted.
I went to super cheap and got a paint can of L87 Pearl White made up.
After i painted them it turned out really green, so will have to see what i can do...🥲
adlbeetle66 ·
Also i have wire brushed the passenger side floorpan to reveal some swiss cheese 😠...
Got a new floor pan in stock ~ ready to go in..
Have also wire brushed the drivers side, but all is well! 😀
Pics of drivers side coming soon... 🤓
ptjcmaavw ·
Wow!! 👍
This is getting better and better!
Can i suggest getting some white paint and doing a light~faint coat over the greeny paint, and see how it turns out?
Cheers
P.S. Those shocks looks old man... 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks mate.
Thats exactly what i was thinking as for the wheels.
Yeah.. they are coming off and new ones are going on as soon as i can 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Small update...
Drivers side all cleaned up!
Ready for Epoxy Mastic 121...
adlbeetle66 ·
Got new headlight bulbs in...
Doesn't look too bright in the photo, but are actually very nice!
Also fixed up my rear bumpers - i thought they were a bit wobbly, and realised these spacers were missing. Got some more, gave them a squirt, and on they go! 🤪
Then i pulled out the floor panel, wire brushed and sanded it, then primed it. I did this because it was all rusty on the bottom.
adlbeetle66 ·
Pulled the pedal assembly out so i could wire brush underneath and install the accelerator repair kit. 🙂
This spacer was all rusty, so i treated it and primed it.
Also the cover as all rusty too, so i did the same.
adlbeetle66 ·
Also put a new fuel pump seal on as i had one spare and the old one was looking a bit ratty 🙂
As for the thread to hold the Weber in place, plastic steel didn't work, so we will have to re-tap the thread.
Will keep everyone updated when i can! 😀
Also bought a VDO temperature sender ~ more updates soon!
bushed ·
I meant 4 short overriders on the front and back bars !!
not the double height ones D
B
adlbeetle66 ·
B,
Not really sure what you mean ❓
D.
adlbeetle66 ·
Another small update,
Got some Rust Converter, and painted it all over the affected areas at the front of both pans and the firewall to prevent further rotting before it comes to getting the repairs done.
If you look carefully, you can see the pin holes in the battery tray...
Please excuse the bad pictures 😀
Till the next update 🙂...
adlbeetle66 ·
Also got that cover and spacer painted... Pictures coming soon...
Floor panel was a bit of a disaster, i did the painting at night time, and when i cam out in the morning, all the mosquitoes had stuck to it 😬
Anyway, had to chip them out, give it a light sand and another coat.
Pictures also to follow 🙂
ptjcmaavw ·
Amazing work for how old you are buddy.
Are you doing the welding yourself or getting someone else to do that?
Epoxy Mastic 121 works great. Apply it by using a mini foam paint roller. Get them from your local Bunnings or Masters.
Once again, well done! 👍
😵
ptjcmaavw ·
By the way, is your avatar photo real or is it photo shopped?
Cheers 😉
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks mate.
Ok. Have been told the same thing by the guy that is welding it for me! 😂
Yes, avatar is real, by brother was mucking around with the 1300 engine in it, revving it up, turning the key off, pumping the accelerator, and before it coughed out, turn the key back on and KA- BOOM.
We took a video, and screen shot it when it got to the spot 😀😂😂😂

Have taken a massive turn in this project, and have decided it will be a body-off-pan RATSTORATION.. 😎
Spent hours on this over the last days trying to get all the bolts out, and here we are 👍!!
adlbeetle66 ·
Now that this has been done, we can get to everything better to work on it, and the body is flying high so we can weld in the new heater channels easier 🙂
wombatventures ·
Wish I had garage beams strong enough to do that mate!.

That's great Denver, worthwhile in the end but a lot of work.

That's awesome; one of the best 1 person body lifts!
Makes me want to work on mine
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks guys...
From removing the body, i need to replace all the floorpan bolts, and the body to chassis seal..
Oh, and put all the horrible sticky gunk back on 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
Small update...
Got the chassis out today, and got the water blaster fired up 🙂
Before and after picture 📝
adlbeetle66 ·
As beetlenut said on page one ~ i have now fixed the fuel filter... It runs under the car near the gearbox away from the dizzy...
adlbeetle66 ·
More pics...🙂

Body off pan is the way to go!!!!
Mad work for a young guy 😉!
I had to pressure-blast my 76 bug after hurtlin through the mud out the back - but dont think it turned out that clean 😂
Cheers and keep up the good work..
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks mate. Yeah... loved those pics 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Small update..
Got the rear shockies on...
Got the new floor pan out, and sat it there to see how it looked 🙂
bushed ·
secret hideout ...I wanna see a pic here M8
adlbeetle66 ·
Watcha mean ❓
adlbeetle66 ·
Also got another gauge holder in.. 😉
adlbeetle66 ·
Oh and some bits arrived for me.. 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Bit more...
Got the front drivers guard... found more rust 🤖🤖
adlbeetle66 ·
And today.....
2 boxes arrived in the mail for me 👍
Yay! Mirrors!!.
I have originally planned to do the hinge pins, and get the mirrors to attach onto the hinge pins, but sold those, and then decided to go for these...
They are similar to the Porsche 356 style mirrors i think 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Floor panel all painted 🙂
No its not perfect... but good enough for me 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
Now the fun starts!
psimitar ·
Doing well dude 🙂
Just a wee note about the placement of the fuel pump gaskets. The one that has the large hole in it actually sits under the plastic spacer and then the one with 3 small holes on top of the spacer. However, getting the spacer/pedestal out is tricky cos it has a long nose that goes down into the engine and the nose engages with a boss inside the crankcase. It's this nose that gets rather stuck in the boss and many times it breaks upon trying to remove and you have to try and extract the rest using a coarse thread screw into the nose's remains. So upto you if you want to go to the trouble. So long as the lower gasket ain't leaking then maybe leave it be 🙂
psimitar ·
I had a look on the Glasurit website for you about the L87 paint formula.
There is no green tint used. They use a sepia brown, light blue and a touch of black with the base colour and pearling tint.
Every paint manufacturer will have different pigments that make up their tints that go into the overall paint mix formula and so whatever Supercheap use may have green in the formula but you are also having a relatively inexperienced person mixing the paint for you compared to a paint supplier who's been doing this for years. One gram over the stated formula amount in a 400gm aerosol can easily change the overall colour of the mix.
Try Prestige Paints over in Archerfield. They're the nearest Glasurit stockist to you.
grazza7755 ·
Just a thought with your ratchet body lift.
What are your plans to lower it?
When you release those ones, it will drop instantly to the ground.
You are probably aware of this, I'm just making sure.
Great work and progress, by the way.

Yeah... I was kinda stuck on that one 🙂. Nah, when we were lifting it up, the ratchet strap got full a couple of times, so me and my brother held the weight of the car, while my dad un-did the ratchet strap and emptied it, then did it back up again.. 🙂. I suppose we'll have to do the same when lowering 😊
adlbeetle66 ·
Small update.. 🙂..
Got the tunnel all in bare metal with some flapper wheels on the grinder.
Then later on i got the drivers side pan done the same...
adlbeetle66 ·
Yes, will have to do around the edges with the wire brush on the drill 🙂.
adlbeetle66 ·
Then i got all the paint off around the edge of the new pan ready for pre drilling and for spot welding onto the lip of the tunnel.
adlbeetle66 ·
And above is a picture of some goodies that turned up for me 🙂.
Epoxy Mastic 121. For treating and painting all the floorpans and chassis ~ when the time comes 😁
psimitar ·
I'd suggest painting the cleaned areas sooner rather than later so you don't have to clean any mild surface rust from the recently bare metalled surfaces. Just leave a few inches above the lip of the spine until the new pan is welded on. 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
I will see what happens... Shouldn't be too hard to remove the top layer of surface rust off when i need to 🙂.
psimitar ·

Then i cleaned up all the spot welds to look like...........🙂
CheapChalee ·
Real nice project, like the "Rat" style that you are going for. Congrats to you for doing the work yourself, adds an extra level of pride also. Be interesting to see the finished project.

psimitar ·
Looking good dude 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Heaps!! 😀
psimitar ·
Oh, do you have some zinc primer to spray the spine lip in? Stops it going rusty and makes it ready for welding 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Yep.. will be doing that when i can...
adlbeetle66 ·
Am glad i replaced the pan... wouldn't take a too heavy person to fall through ❗😂
adlbeetle66 ·
And... how the chassis sits 🙂😊
adlbeetle66 ·
Well Guy's, the decklid is done!
My mate repaired it all for me! 😊 - Thanks Mike! (psimitar)
psimitar ·
No worries man 🙂
Oh and if you want to panel beat the rear edge of the new pan then just needs a good sized lump of hardwood, like Oak, marbu, etc, and a hammer. Hold the lump of hardwood under the area to be flattened and bop the floorpan area with the hammer. 🙂
It does take a bit of strength to hold the wood and cushion the hammer blows that are hard enough to squash the metal but see how ya go. Just another money saving idea.
CheapChalee ·
Nice rebuild, this is going to be nice when you are done.
Chalee
psimitar ·
Doh, just spotted I forgot to grind the plug welds down on the inner lip. Rats!!!
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks...
Oh, i'm sure i can work that one out 😁
adlbeetle66 ·
I think i'll put the whole process of the decklid repair here... Will get the photos on as soon as i can 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
So first is all the filler removed from the rusted out area
You can see how thick the bondo was cause the previous owners / "panel beaters" were too lazy to pull the dent
adlbeetle66 ·
And the first side trimmed up ready for repair pieces
Now the repair patches He prefered to make from a knackered decklid as you get the same profile to weld back in instead of having to shape flat steel. It's not necessary to use up an old decklid but if you've got a cruddy one sitting around you may as well recycle it 🙂
Then welded the first 2 patches in...
adlbeetle66 ·
He then dressed the welds...🙂
Unfortunately the area between the 2 repair panels shall be left until the inner strengthener is out cause the metal has pull in from the dent so the repair pieces would end up being the incorrect profile so best to do them afterwards.
So onto the other side the first of probably 4 patches welded in and dressed.
adlbeetle66 ·
The un-dented side is all solid steel again and the second pic shows where the spot welds are so I can use my spot weld drill, brad drill in USA, to seperate the skins.
Inner panel all removed now and the rust treatment is drying...
Plus the large dent came out pretty easy with a bit of dolly n hammer work 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Inner panel cleaned up and zinc primered ready for repairs.
adlbeetle66 ·
Inner panel cleaned up and zinc primered ready for repairs.
adlbeetle66 ·
🙂
And the lengthy process of welding in repair pieces to the inner panel so as not to loose the profile and dimensions of the original as the remenants keep the joining lip where it should be 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Inner panel all welded and just needs dressing now.
Coupla patches left on the outer skin and then clean up, zinc prime and pop back together again 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
And to nearly finish things off we have the inner panel dressed and zinc primered...
Then the inside of the outer skin cleaned up and zinc primered...
adlbeetle66 ·
And again... The finished product... 😁
Just have to grind back the spot welds on the inside 🙂
bushed ·

Got the lip on the chassis all clean and Zinc Primed.. 🙂
Paul Smith ·
Is that zinc primer weld through and if so what's it called and where do you get it?
I dont think it's on their website, but thats where i got it from...
Cheers
psimitar ·
Paul Smith wrote:Is that zinc primer weld through and if so what's it called and where do you get it?
So long as it's high zinc content then you can weld thru it but unlike a true weld thru primer it may not be as temperature stable. I've never checked but TBH I've not noticed it bubble and peel from the heat generated by welding 🙂
scoopsta ·
i use U-POL Weld #2 copper weld thru primer ...awesome stuff.. not tried the zinc primer as yet
adlbeetle66 ·
Here's the stuff i've been using.. 😊
adlbeetle66 ·
Got the weber off today... Saw that it's got 36mm venturi's in it, so it'll work..😊
Soaked it in some degreaser for a while.. got all sorts of goo and flakey stuff floating on the top 😠😊
When i put the carby in, the water was clear.. check out the colour now!
Also made up a manifold block-off plate 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
Its now sitting on the bench drying 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Also noticed some rust appearing on the bottom of the tunnel.. treated and primed it, so i could get a good look at it. 🤖
ptjcmaavw ·
MMM... new solid metal 😵
Nice work there for a 13 y.o!! 👍
Funny rust you have there.. havn't seen it like that before.. my guess is that is was parked on an angle for many years..
Keep us informed!!😏
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks mate,
When i bought it, it had been sitting for 2 years, and a year before that it had been sitting for 10 years!!
Where all the rust is kinda backs up that statement! 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Was a bit bored, so i got the spark plugs cleaned up..
Before & after.. 😊
adlbeetle66 ·
Then checked the spacing was correct, then re-installed!
adlbeetle66 ·
😊🥲
Looking a bit sad and dusty..
😊🥲
psimitar ·
Paint thinners and an old toothbrush or brass wire brush will give the carb body a nice clean up if you wish to make it look like new.
Plugs are nice and sooty so mixture of the carb is rather rich. See if you can find an exploded view of the carb online so you can find the idle, main, air jets and emulsion tube.
will give us an idea which jet or jets are on the large side 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks..
Here you go..
adlbeetle66 ·
Its what i've been using anyway.. 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
I suppose i could use this too 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Little bit more..
Got the exhaust off...
adlbeetle66 ·
Then i decided to rust treat & prime the underside of the wheel well...
adlbeetle66 ·
Then i re-primed the inside of the decklid..
Yes, have still got to grind the spot welds off...🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Today i ground back the spot welds and primed them 🙂
Then i chopped out the battery tray section of my old pan to practice welding the new pan on! 😊🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
Also, some goodies arrived from overseas! 😵
adlbeetle66 ·
.
adlbeetle66 ·
Started getting some rust cut out today..
Am picking up my heater channels and other repair sections at the end of next week 😀.
Yes, that is more zinc coating 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
I apologise for the blurry photos - night time 😊
adlbeetle66 ·
The inner guard on this side is stuffed... see above for the repair sections i will be using... 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Heres a pic to show just how thick the bog was that the previous owner had "rust repaired" 😬
adlbeetle66 ·
And one more pic...
Dibsy ·
Wow Denver, that is starting to look like my first Oval !
I hope you are going to learn how to do the welding yourself, good experience.
Best of luck mate.
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Mark,
Doing some myself, and getting another mate to do the trickier bits 😀.
adlbeetle66 ·
Did a bit more...
Got the welding gear out 😊
Got a brace all welded up... in between putting out fires that caught onto the hood lining down the pillar 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
This now means i can open and close the doors 👍
Have loosened a few of the screws.. just gotta wait for my blisters on my hands to heal before i can keep going 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
One door is off.. the other one is a bit more stiff, so WD-40 time, and come back later 🙂
Then i took the shifter and degreased it all...
Got the grinder out.. and took off the paint around the shifter area...Got the tops of the bolts painted...
adlbeetle66 ·
Bought a quick shift kit.. Had to modify the little plate so it would sit inside the spacer nicely.. Then painted it silver to match 🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
Then cut out come rust...
Found some more rust near the horn bracket... cleaned it up and zinc primed it ready to cutting out and welding time.. i may have to take the bumper off to do so though 🥲
Finky ·
Good work Mate! Looks like your heading for a full resto!
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Finky.
Not quite.. i just want it to look original, but with a difference if you know what i mean 😉
So i can say "just bought it off an old granny, and cleaned it up a bit" 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
Started to put a thin layer of bog on the decklid...
CheapChalee ·
Nice work, I had a lot of rust on my 69 also.
Chalee
ptjcmaavw ·
Any updates Denver?
adlbeetle66 ·
Sorry, its been a while...
First i had bought some repair panels.
The passenger heater channel will be returned and a whole new channel will be bought.
I also cleaned up the rust on my passenger guard, and from a donor guard i got from 'bushed' i made up a repair piece and rust treated it ready for welding.
adlbeetle66 ·
I also bought some A Pillar repair panels that came from the UK. They are far superior to the cheap Chinese rubbish that can be easily sourced.
Then i purchased a better sway bar for the front beam. I am currently in the process of painting it black.
adlbeetle66 ·
Bought some white-walls and cleaned them up and they look new 👍
I now have the shell on a frame so it is now nice and solid to work on.
I cleaned back the front apron to bar metal so i can get to the rust down the sides...
I cleaned up the rust on the rear inner guard then with a bit of messy painting i managed to blend it all in - you can see where i was doing it by looking at the zinc'd sections...
That'll do for now 🙂
Banshee777 ·
Like the frame, mines sitting on the left overs of my retaining wall.
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Banshee77, more pictures coming soon!
adlbeetle66 ·
Got the shifter all assembled.
Then i added a person touch and painted.
I then marked out the sections to be cut.
Strogger ·
Coming along nicely mate.
I used the same front heater channel sections for mine, not sure what you think, but mine were a bit "off" and it took a lot of cutting, bending and swearing to get mine into a semblance of order..🤪
Go easy when you weld them in, they are much thinner and will blow through when welding if your not careful, or if you have a cheap arse mig with bugger all control like me. 😂
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks, i am using a whole new one on the passenger side, and just the little black ones on the drivers side...
Thanks for the advice
adlbeetle66 ·
Guards.
Got the lip all cleaned up, and zinc coated.
Then mixed some paint up and tried to blend it in a bit...
adlbeetle66 ·
Epoxy Mastic 121 time!
Cleaned the drivers pan of rust again, then pulled out the master cylinder to repaint as it is quite surface rusty and dirty...
1st coat done 😎
adlbeetle66 ·
After school yesterday i decided to mix up some more and do another coat, and make sure i get all the seat rails.
Originally i though i had ordered BLACK paint, but it turned out GREY. Thats ok, i will use this to my advantage. You will see how it tuns out soon 👍
ptjcmaavw ·
Lookin good. am wanting to see what they are going to run out like...👍
adlbeetle66 ·
Got the spot welds drilled out - just a move towards getting the heater channel out..
CheapChalee ·
Lot of good work going on there. Lots of rust.
Chalee
adlbeetle66 ·
Yes, lots of rust - definitely a lot more there than what i thought when i first bought it!
Next time i buy a car to restore i definitely will be more pedantic about rust!
Anyway, wont be too much longer and the repair panels will be starting to go in!
wombatventures ·
Looking good Denver. Liking the way the bug hangs in the rafters.
At least once you cut the rust out you'll know its done right, not hidden under someone elses primer and filler. 😎
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Terry,
Very true.

Here you go.
This is what I've been working on over the weekend. Got all the pan masked up and painted. I think i like the look 😎 - anybody else think anything of it?
psimitar ·
Different but pretty cool 🙂
Oh, and I had an idea for the surface rust on the rest of the pan you'd stripped to bare metal. Rustbuster and those metal scouring balls/pads from household items in Woolies etc. Rustbuster in the paint isle at Bunnings. Wet the surface rust with the Rustbuster and leave for 30secs to a minute and then use the scour pads soaked in Rustbuster to scrub the surface rust away. Then use a clean rag to wipe the excess moisture away. Might be quicker than having to go over it with the drill/grinder again 🙂
landfall ·
x2 for rustbuster
adlbeetle66 ·
OK Thanks for letting me know..
Will be either that or giving my brother something to do with the orbital sander 😁
psimitar ·
adlbeetle66 wrote:Will be either that or giving my brother something to do with the orbital sander 😁
Hmm, me thinks that may fall under the cruelty act for child labour of 1982 😂
wombatventures ·
Rust Buster or Rust Converter, Scouring pads and get your brother to do it! Just thinking out loud! 😉😂

😂 Does that apply for the people that are making the younger work, who are both under 15 y.o? 😂
wombatventures wrote:Rust Buster or Rust Converter, Scouring pads and get your brother to do it! Just thinking out loud! 😉😂
Cheers, will give it a go - got plenty of the scouring pads from mums kitchen, now to find the rust converter i had somewhere!
adlbeetle66 ·
So think its probably time to start to bring everyone up to date.
I have a kind friend who came over to my house with his welding gear after i got home from school and welded in my pan for me ~ finally!!
That night i got the edges all clean and squirted it with some primer.
wombatventures ·
Bloody awesome work Denver.
If you want a holiday, free room and food, we've got a beetle and a kombi and a 1 Tonner and a Monaro and a ........ You can guess!
Right. I'm off to the shed to stare at what needs doing! 😂
Seriously Mate, Keep up the good work.
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks Mate,
In reality, there's not too many other 13 year olds doing this kind of thing 🙂.
Haha... sometimes its like that isn't it 😁
Trying to get some more photos to upload now... 🙂

Thanks mate,
To tell the truth, i don't think there are many other 13 year olds doing what i'm doing! 😉

Ok. Now for an update.
The next morning (saturday) I got out the Sikaflex 221 and got dad to do it for me - who did water proofing once as a job so he knows how to do it 🙂.
When that was drying, i snuck upstairs and grabbed a green scouring pad from the kitchen. Pulled out the rust buster and started scrubbing on the tunnel - absolutely fantastic!
That brings us to Saturday afternoon when i mixed up some more Epoxy Mastic 121. Did a coat on the whole passenger pan, and the tunnel.
adlbeetle66 ·
I don't actually have a photo of it at the moment, but will soon!
While i was waiting for everything to dry i decided to paint the sway bar for the front beam.
JAB-AIR ·
Nice and neat work mate!!
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks. Will try and get some more pics on here soon if i can!
adlbeetle66 ·
OK. Here is a pic of when is painted, still have to do the seat rail on the passenger side...
Then came sunday evening. Masked up the tunnel and the drivers pan.
Out with the satin black on monday - then POP!
Monday afternoon came quickly once a few coats had been done on the tunnel...
In goes the newly painted master cylinder, and out comes the pedal assembly box... heck... how did this thing go again??? 🤪
Finally got that in using the original parts, then i will have to install the pedal assembly repair kit i bought.
Then i saw the fuel filter was quite dirty, so i grabbed a new one i had in stock, and on it goes.
Cheers all,
Denver
psimitar ·
Looking good there 🙂
When you finally go to put the seats in it's a good idea to sand the paint from the top of the runners and go down to about 1200 with the wet n dry. Then lube em with a bit of white lithium grease. The paint can otherwise make the seat grab instead of slide 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks. Will do! 🙂.
Hoping to have the passenger heater out very soon, just finishing off this terms school work, then will be ripping into it!
adlbeetle66 ·
Yay! Update time!
Got the camber compensator off, and stripped back into pieces.
Got it all painted, and assembled back together again.
Next we decided it was time to get the engine back out.
adlbeetle66 ·
Engine is out. The flywheel has obviously been scraping on the bell housing unfortunately, so that will have to be cleaned up again...
Excuse the poor pictures...
Then it was time to pull the gearbox and replace the front mount.
Before and After 😁
adlbeetle66 ·
Once that was one, my younger brother started to strip down the engine... 🙂
Then i got the old front sway bar off to put the new thicker one on. The new bar came with urethane bushings, but the smaller clamps are too wide to fit between the lips on either side 🤪. So will have to work this out sometime soon 🤖
I added a pic of how the larger ones fit ?!
adlbeetle66 ·
Heres the sway bar off 🙂
That'll do for now... I have just got to decide between 2 fan shrouds i have, then i will be modding it a bit 👍 ... Sorry, you'll have to wait and see 🙂
psimitar ·
You can buy a heavy duty roll bar clamp kit that would come with the urethane bushes or just get hold of some 1.5mm steel and make your own 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
I am waiting to hear from Mick Motors, otherwise i will do that 🙂
1cut808 ·
WOW. Good effort for a young bloke... I hope my boys will be this keen in a couple of years!
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks... yeah... keep at them! 😀
adlbeetle66 ·
Took the old heater fronts back and bought the whole length ones instead...
Strogger ·
Hope these ones work out for you as it's probably they way I should have gone on mine.
I used the same front bits you mentioned you returned.
I had issues where the captive nuts broke off in 2 places when I was putting the pan back onto the body.🙁
Anyway, good work, hope your enjoying the process.

Sad to hear - hopefully these ones turn out ok! Definitely enjoying the process, gives us something to break from schoolwork! 🙂

The captive nuts breaking free is a common problem with these cheaper quality channels. Was one of the reasons why I bought Hookys closing panels so I didn't have this problem.
adlbeetle66 ·
OK. Was my 14th birthday 3 weeks ago and a got a couple of pressies that are going to come in handy 🙂!
psimitar ·
Cool and very handy 🙂
oldskoolguy ·
Yes, very handy 👍
adlbeetle66 ·
I found an Illuminated 'D' sign in a bulk parts lot i bought, so i put in a new bulb, and re-welded one of the threads on the inside, and cleaned it all up. I then decided to try my hand at some fab work and made up a bracket for it. Had to weld it in a couple of places, then bend it, but came out great when it was painted 🙂
oldskoolguy ·
Neat! 😎😎
Blackie ·
Those heater channels look like there for a later model bug?
adlbeetle66 ·

Blackie wrote:Those heater channels look like there for a later model bug?
I think they're kind of a universal channel.. 🤓
So next my brother and i fabricated some panels for the peashooter holes.. Thanks to James - a.k.a. beetle_nut for donating some panels to us! 👍
Cut out the outside of the old ones then tac'd them in - ok - it was a bit more than a tac! 😀 Then primed it.
Then i pulled the roof rack out and wanted to do something just to make it look a little, say, different. I went digging through dads cupboard and found some 'Walnut' timber stain. Gave the timber a light sand and a clean and stained them. Open to comments! 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
And as you can see above i put my decklid back on for now...
So i decided to get the number plate bulb assembly on too... I went digging through my spares and found a spare one with a better lens, gasket and seal for the wire... Swapped it all over, my brother made up a new wire for me, and we put it on.
beetle_nut ·
No problems mate.was happy to give it to someone who was gonna use some of it rather than rusting away out the back..
Keep up the good work and enjoy the resto even when its a pain in the ass haha..
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks again James - hoping to get some more done on the engine this week! 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Got a new toy with my SCA gift card i got for my birthday.
Already done a few things... Then i painted them with heatproof black.
adlbeetle66 ·
Then installed! (Also painted the clip too - didnt get a pic.)
Oh, that sand lasted for about 3 minutes, so got some more grittier stuff 🙂
Cheers all.
psimitar ·
Nice job on the rear valance.
For some garnet grit there's a guy in Moorooka that advertises on gumtree. I've used him a few times and a 25kg bag only cost $25 plus a bit for delivery. It's way cheaper than the supercheap stuff.
adlbeetle66 ·
Nah, have a mate that does Sandblasting Equipment, he sold me a bag sand ages ago for a sand pit, then i remembered about it, so am sifting it out as i need it 😉
psimitar ·
DO NOT use sand. It can give you silicosis of the lungs as the sand explodes against the surface being blasted it becomes extremely small particles that even a good mask may not filter out. These small particles are high in silicon content and once in your lungs can give you silicosis of the lungs.
They've tried changing the name to media blasting, since sand was found to have this medical problem, but it's been a struggle as many people still think of it as sand blasting.
Anyway, best you stop using the sand plus the garnet does a better job of stripping than the sand. 🙂
59baja ·
Wow some good titbits of information here and a good look at a resto, nice work looking good as it progresses

Hi Denver
YES do wear a minimum Class P1 mask which will offer you adequate respiratory protection when sandblasting. Sand contains Silica (quartz) which can lead to silicosis over a long period. Make sure the P1 mask has 2 straps and a metal nose piece to shape around your nose for a good seal. You don't have to worry about being clean shaven yet 😂
Note: a P1 mask protects you against mechanically generated particles and a P2 against mechanically and thermally generated particles. Buy a box of P2's and use them when you're welding as well to protect against metal fume fever. Welding zinc and stainless is particularly nasty.
adlbeetle66 ·
OK Thanks for the information! The "media" i am using is actually pink in colour, so maybe this is garnet grit? I might snap a photo of it and post it on here... 😂 Thanks Nolan, will definitely take these precautions into hand!
Oh, heres a photo of some welding i did on the rear passenger inner guard. Went pretty well actually!
Before & After 🙂

Yeah... not bad, still savin for gas 😊
adlbeetle66 ·
Sorry for long-time no updates, so here we go.
Also gone back to attaching the photos again too. 🙂
Took the fuel pump spacer off and put the seals in the correct place, also painted it quickly too 🙂.
Then painted the dizzy clamp and re-installed. So here is what the engine is up to.
I also sandblasted the other tappet cover and painted it and the clip and installed, but didn't get a pic.
More to follow 😉
adlbeetle66 ·
Next up was the rear driver inner guard.
Then ground back, filled and painted.
adlbeetle66 ·
Then back to the passenger side, i cut out the hole, made up a panel and welded it up 🙂 The left hand side is probably the neatest welds...

P3 on a decent 3M half face mask is best but for any type of fume you also need an A1 vapour filter. A1E1 is a good combo for most vehicle based procedures with a P3. Look after your lungs especially being young as they're more susceptable to foreign matter.
Weldings going well altho is that the gasless wire you're using? That or the metal and area around the weld isn't clean enough so causes the blobby welds which don't penetrate properly.
Good progress dude 🙂
adlbeetle66 ·
Cool - thanks for the information.
Yep, still on gasless, but just sold a bit of parts, so i think i have enough money for gas now 🙂...
Will get some more pics of what I'm up to tonight... Also trying to work on the Mk 1 at the same time too 😏
adlbeetle66 ·
Heres the mask i'm using 🙂
Then here's the first cylinder tin i sandblasted and painted 🙂
And the drivers rear inner gaurd finished until I can get some L87 Pearl White mixed up and touch those edges up.
adlbeetle66 ·
The current state of the passenger rear inner guard...
ptjcmaavw ·
Hey mate, havn't been on here in a while to catch up with what you're doing.
Looking great, and from the pic above, it looks like the heater channel is missing?! 😏
adlbeetle66 ·
Yes, thats true. I have cut the heaters out and am trimming the new ones carefully as i go.
I left a bit of the passenger one in, still to be neatened up a bit so that it'll all blend in...
Excuse those old terrible welds there...
adlbeetle66 ·
Some work in progress on the fan shroud...
m4co ·
Cool idea for the fan shroud, I might do the same thing since I replaced my rotted out heater boxes for j-tubes 👍
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks. I will have some updates on here soon > Now that i am on school holidays 🙂
Finky ·
looking forward to more posts. Your doing a great job!
adlbeetle66 ·
Here we are, the finished product of the fan shroud. Its not for a $100k show car, so it doesn't bother me.
Now coming along fast, the current progress of the engine.
adlbeetle66 ·
Oh, now that i have a new installation kit for my sway bar its now ready to go in! 😁
wombatventures ·
Fan shroud looks ace Denver.
Keep up the good work.
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks man
Got a new breather on the oil filler too 😎
adlbeetle66 ·
And yes - the manifold isn't quite lining up 😏
adlbeetle66 ·
Trying to get the driver heater channel all sorted - as well as the fire wall.
adlbeetle66 ·
We made a gusset to join the heater just before the B pillar. The front is just all tacked in for the moment.
adlbeetle66 ·
And the passenger heater to date.
Quite a bit of lining up to do, the second picture shows how poor quality these are 😠
adlbeetle66 ·
Been a while since an update, so here we go!
Got the heater on the passenger side all tacked in, and we're just slowing trimming the firewall / bulkhead when we get time.
But had another issue. I went to pull the distributor out to put it into another bug as i was having ignition issues with it, and the drive came with it 😠
So this view is down the hole 🙁
I was told that there was supposed to be 2 shims / washers on the bottom of the drive, and they didn't come out when i pulled the drive out, so i put a fine screw driver down the hole and poked around, and i was sure there was only one there, so i got in there with a fine magnet and pulled it out. And there was only 1.
I thought for the worst and pulled out the sump plug, drained all the oil with the engine sitting on two old coke- crates and then pulled the sump plate off. Still no sign i shook it, flushed more oil though, and nothing.
adlbeetle66 ·
So i took a photo of the shim between the calipers, and send it to a good friend of mine, a VW mechanic.
Thankfully, he replied that it was an early thicker type, and only the 1 shim was required 😊
Got the shim lowered down with some forceps, and then thanks to karmann141 and vwo60 on here, i used the distributor drive puller tool to put the drive easily back in the right place.
So in went the spring, then the distributor itself, and clamped it all down!
Turned over the engine, and all was perfect!
Well at least i know the drive is in correctly now!🤪
adlbeetle66 ·
So then we had the fuel pump on and the weber & linkage on.
adlbeetle66 ·
Next me and my brother got it off the crates and onto the chassis.
I slowly and carfully bent the pre-heaters into their correct shape (empi quality once again shining out), and onto the car.
On with the extractors and the muffler and clamped up everything nicely.
We wiried up the coil and the starter motor ready for a test run.
Its half running, but spitting backfires everywhere and causing aero start cans to catch on fire, so we might just re-think that before we give it another go 🙂
Fat Boy ·
Great stuff!! A lot of work a credit to ya 😉
adlbeetle66 ·
Thanks! Got some more pics i'll post later on
