On behalf of Club VW Sydney I would like to extend to you and your fellow club members an invitation to attend our 7th Annual Supersprint in conjunction with the VW Nationals car show. This year sees a change of venue as we have moved to Sydney Motorport Park at Eastern Creek where we will be utilising the Amaroo (south) circuit. The event will be held on Saturday 23rd May 2015.
The event will be held under a CAMS event permit and follow the CAMS NSW guidelines for supersprints. For pre-entries received on or before May 16th 2015 the entry fee will be $170 for males and $85 for females. Entries received after this date will incur $30 late fee and be accepted subject to organisers discretion. Please accept our invitation to attend this event and could you kindly pass on the Supplementary Regs and Entry Forms to anyone who may wish to attend.
See website for further info and online payments. Note that even if you pay online you will still need to send me your entry form by email or to my mailbox. (not the clubvw mailbox). http://www.clubvw.org.au/2015-supersprint The mobile phone number on the sprint website belongs to my wife. Do me a favour and dont call it! My number is.
In closing could I also request that if any of your members who may wish to help out on the day and are CAMS qualified in the roles of flag marshals or scrutineer we would greatly appreciate any help that may be offered.

hi Chris, unfortunately I can't make it this year which I am really annoyed about as I was really looking forward to the new venue. Good luck to all those running on the day I am sure your will have a ball. I'll be there in 2016.

is it possible this year when we have the sighting lap to take a passenger. My son was in my car at Wakefield park last year for the sighting lap, with a full face helmet on & was asked to get out as there was apparently a safety issue. I then proceeded to do a lap of the track at 50kph in a race harness & full face helmet. To say he was bitterly disappointed was an understatement.
Where is the safety issue?. I do more than double that speed up the M1 to take him to school.
amazeer ·
I hear what you're saying Jak, he's much more likely to get injured on the way there with cars coming the other way and red light runners coming at you from all sides. I agree with you 100% but the rules are we cant have passengers in cars. The only exception is that you can have a CAMS licensed driver as an instructor in the familiarisation session.

luddenham not ready? EC would be significantly more expensive than wakefield Id assume?

It should run OK, Chris, even though it has only been on the track once [Raleigh Park] since the last Nats. Supersprint. The driver is more likely to be the problem. 😂

I had a quick scan through the list of competitors and was surprised to see just over half the 40 or so competitors are VW/VAG. Nothing against other makes and models competing, but surely if an event organised by a VW club smack in the middle of Sydney can not attract more NSW VW/VAG cars to compete, where is the passion amongst the VW community to get behind their local events? There's a lot of keyboard racers these days...
HappyDaze ·
I agree, Craig...and why so few Beetles ❓

Well said!!!
And that means you hillclimb boys too ;-) ;-)
colin ·
I would not usually feel the need to explain my actions, however, lets put this to bed, because every year the Hillclimb Boys get a "were are you".
1. Cost
It costs approx. $500.00 per round to compete in the NSW Hillclimb Series, being made up of fuel, entry fee, food etc. There are 10 rounds with points for your best 8, I will compete in only 7 or 8 due to the cost. So that's over $4k if you don,t spend any money on the car at all. I have a wife, 2 kids and a mortgage, so racing is a big luxury for me.
2. The Car
My Beetle is a purpose built Hillclimb car. It has to be to keep up with the very competitive Imp Prod class. there are 260hp atw cars racing against us. So I have a small pulley that slows down the gen/fan speed. This stops the fan exploding at high rpm and also sneaks a few ponies. However the car makes engine oil temp quickly, I mean 1 second of hard running equals 1 degree oil temp. So 3 flying laps at SMP 1.8k,s per lap?.
My tyres are Advan GS compound, that's super soft. Awesome for hillclimb events, heat up very fast. 1 lap 1.8k,s would heat them up, 3 laps, no way. The car is geared close, again for lugging up hills. On a 1/4 mile pass I run out of legs at the 350mtr mark at 7700rpm in 4th gear!.
3. Family
My wife looks after the family while I indulge in my sport, I,m away racing enough.
So there you go, these are my reasons why I would love to come play with my VW mates at SMP but unfortunately can,t. Some may say they are not reasons but excuses, thats ok.
I hope the event has great weather for all and hope everyone has a incident free weekend. As GT and I allways say at the end of an event. If the car is straight and drives back onto the trailer at the end of a meeting, you,ve had a good weekend.
Cheers Col
PAZZAN ·
ok Colin we all know racing isn't cheap but I am sure some of the boys could show up plus no one is forcing anyone to do 3 laps it would just be nice to see some highly tuned aircooled beetles in full flight a our VW nationals..👍
vw54 ·
OK Col
Lets call it Hill climb then
good to see you still competing
why has TT not entered ???? may be he's working
cnfabo ·
Hope my post didn't piss you off col as there was no intention too, just stirring!! Was more hoping Nathan read it,lol...
And anyway I know your cars set up only for hillclimbs with no external oil coolers ,small pulley and short ratios etc..I think a beetles hard to keep cool doing multiple laps even on a cool day with extra coolers etc and annoying having oil lines and coolers as its just more crap to fix, drain etc......so thumbs up from me to hillclimb setups....and yes the $$$ ad up quickly to do heaps of events,we aren't rich dudes just average wage earners with a hobby that can hurt the wallet sometimes.
P.s was watching some of your incar last night.gets me stoked!!!

HappyDaze ·
Colin is spot on. A well set up hill-climb Beetle is not suitable for circuit work...and vice versa. Horses for courses. 👍
My Sports Sedan - which was originally a good hill-climb car - was useless at hill-climbs after being modified for circuit racing.
bat69 ·
I wont be there because I'm working and my car is in bits spread out across my shed floor.
amazeer ·
Opinions...
Previous years we have run it as 4 flying laps per session. Would you a) prefer to continue like that or b) go for a 10 minute fixed time session? You'd get a longer run but less runs.
In either case figure in the scenario that if a car breaks on lap 1 requiring your session to be red flagged you dont get to restart your session. Under that scenario it might have more of an impact under option a.
You still have work to do, Chris...we need fine weather for Saturday, so get cracking. 👍
amazeer ·
No I still have to sort out the running order. I'm leaving weather to Carter and Birchall. Hopefully between the two of them they can get it right.
HappyDaze ·
Birchall !!!!!
I'll bring my umbrella then. 👍
vw54 ·
leave the brella at home NO RAIN
Craig S ·
Went for a pink slip today, to discover that my brake light switch was dead. Was working last month!
Glad it was discovered today rather than early Sat morning at scrutineering. Would have really dampened my day.
amazeer ·
Didn't have a choice but to leave Wakefield this year.
South circuit is great.don't know what you're on about. Grand prix circuit would cost considerably more and wouldn't be able to get enough flag point marshalls to cover it.
You're right, club vw is not predominantly a motorsport club. Doesn't claim to be. Not sure want the point of your post is. Trying to make me sad? Nup. I have turned 20 drivers away this year when we struggled for a field at Goulburn. So am I concerned that YOU'RE not going to be there?
The annual anti club vw nationals comments are now just as much a part of the vw scene as wide 5 wheels. I dont see the point. Hope you enjoy your Nintendo.
HappyDaze ·
Hope this rain keeps up for tomorrow...it's a bit wet here !

Made it into Sydney, but I am not sure how. Even for a Qlder that was rough weather from Taree down. Nothing short of a cyclone. T5 and trailer were kinda of doing there own thing most of the way. Looks like the weather was moving north and all gone?
1303Steve ·
My car was at tuner all week for a new ECU, pon cams & E85 tune, not making as much power as before, it seems to be a boost issue, the tuner did all he could to find the problem so I just bought the bug home to try to find the cause. It has new brakes that need bedding in and needs an alignment so Im going to run my sons bug now, and look into my bugs problems next week

I know what you mean Craig. I came down that way through that rain this afternoon as well. Only problem I had - blew a fuse. Guess which one - yep, the wipers. Was raining too heavy to stop, so I followed the tail lights of the vehicle in front. Sure kept the concentration levels up.
STIDUB ·
Have fun today guys, wish I could be there 👍

Its a great track well run day
Craig S ·
A big thank you to the organisers, it was a great day.
My first time on a track and it was a lot of fun, and quite challenging. I only had two semi-controlled off track adventures, but various other 'moments'.
My times kept improving throughout the day so I ended up 7 seconds quicker than I started.
That said, the course threw up a number of challenges and I still didn't work out the quickest way down the hill and around the first hairpin.
Having only been a spectator before, I can say that Wakefield is a better spectator track, but I suspect that Eastern Creek south is much more challenging (and about 1hr50min closer to me)
PAZZAN ·
great day 👍👍 thanks to all the officials and volunteers.. 👍👍
HappyDaze ·
It certainly was a credit to all concerned with the running of this event.👍 Steve and Dave did well to organise great weather, too.👍
I started to feel a bit crook during the 2nd run, and decided to pack it in. Hope it's just a wog, and not me getting too old. 😁
vw54 ·
and not me getting too old.
cracker
2nd run I saw you out 3 more times musnt have been too crook
very demanding circuit hey
amazeer ·
was the 10 and 8 minute format better than having a 4 lap session?
Craig S ·
I'm new to supersprints, but I think the format worked well. I think it gave us slightly longer out on course, which helped me get my rythm better.
pv370 ·
So where is next years event ??????
1303Steve ·
Hopefully same venue

Here are a few bits of video from my phone.
I love the one of the VWMA Golf lifting it's back wheel. It did it pretty much every lap - sometimes more than the one I captured.
Old Dubber ·
A big thank you to the organisers, it was a great day.
My first time on a track too, it was awesome!
I pedaled the VWMA Mk1 Golf all day after a two week build - thanks Craig.
and thanks Jeff for the three wheel footage - got to look at that suspension!
bugzla ·
that split rear windowed bug is that the one with the 2lt kombi motor with supercharger
amazeer ·
Back wheels on a golf are only there to stop the rear bumpers scraping anyway.
