Any plans to start work on it?
I just don't have the time or skill to take on yours or even the gumtree one

And could not afford the prices they fetch anyway
Happy with my reliable 2ltr 73 and enjoy just looking at others splittys these days

Might be time to build a carport over it after 25 years
Do nothing else and still wont lose money on it :-)

But would love to see it back on the road

rust bucket ·

yeh, i do like the lichen but as it happens ive already jacked it up off the ground. i have to get chassis number (I think must be 58-61) first, then front beam, rhs reduction hub and set of wheels so it can be car trailered to perth and rolled around the workshop (my garage) approval from wifey already sought.

It is a big project but i reckon nothing i cant handle....?

Dicko ·

Good luck with it bud! Stay motivated and report back.

that is to much for that one
theres 2 on the dsk fully restored for under that price .
vanell (on the dsk) will take $30,000 for his fully restored single cab
with stock running gear or around $40,000 with narrowed front end 4 wheel discs type 4 motor ,irs, rack and pinion ect .
single cabs seem to not sell as well a the windowed vans or dc's

rust bucket ·

Picked up my pick up and a bug and baby in a cradle

modnrod ·

A cruise car, a drag car, and a tow car!
Done and dusted!
🙂

rust bucket ·

Soon my SC splitty will be in perth for me to work on.😂

rust bucket ·

All tied down for the journey

Cornwallvw1 ·

nice!

rust bucket ·

Chassis number 661 307
Engine number 5 168 934

So is that a 1961 with the original 40 HP ?

rust bucket ·

disc beam ready 😎

adlbeetle66 ·

👍

So you named your username after this car??? Nice work, have a rusty 66 bug myself 🙂

rust bucket ·

engine and gbox out

rust bucket ·

old beam out

rust bucket ·

could this be the church key.....found on parcel shelf...

rust bucket ·

the rust 😠

modnrod ·

It's not a rusty hole mate, it's just pre-cleared ready for exciting new shiny stuff.
👍

rust bucket ·

made some wheels

rust bucket ·

tray off

rust bucket ·

1900 degrees and welded phillips screwdriver does the trick

lolight70 ·

PM sent

rust bucket ·

Chassis needed repair

rust bucket ·

LHS chassis couldn't be repaired so in with new sections

DubbyDo ·

Hats off to you bud, that's a massive undertaking there but will be even more satisfying at the end because of it. Keep the updates coming with the bare steel porn

rust bucket ·

i cut some profiles and had a local engineering company fold some 13 top hats and 2 load bed channels in 1.6mm mild steel for less than $400

adlbeetle66 ·

Not a bad deal!
Keep the progress coming!

rust bucket ·

just installed front and rear centre chassis, 1 and 5 top hats, sills and 6th box section.

keeping the original I beams since they were ok

rust bucket ·

classic fab fit ok

rust bucket ·

new battery tray

rust bucket ·

new load bed channel and top hats done

rust bucket ·

woodruff key and rat a lowlight steering box for parts

rust bucket ·

I'm doing this build in a single car garage...I had to lower the front in order to get it under the roller door so I can spin it round - park in backwards to work on the front!

rust bucket ·

time to cut out more rust!

rust bucket ·

chassis is ok after heaps of grinding - testing the relationship with my neighbours

rust bucket ·

All fits together so now ready to weld

rust bucket ·

I was careful to take time doing this weld since its quite a long weld=distortion and right up front

rust bucket ·

front end in

rust bucket ·

new gearbox ready

rust bucket ·

new kit arrived

rust bucket ·

and the final panel is in

Bizarre ·

Brilliant work mate!

Love to know what the ratio of rust to kept steel is

The "new kit" is that IRS?

rust bucket ·

Yes, IRS kit built here is Oz, Sydney in fact. I've already bolted it in and it took 10 mins....

I'll run bay window hubs up front and back so be on narrow 5's.

I'd could take a guess at ratio, probably 50/50 - its all new from the cab back, except half a chassis, I beams, side panels from c pillar back and rear wheel wells.

then forward of the cab probably half is new well.

I'm nearly tired of cutting out rust - worn out two 100mm grinders and 36 cut off discs and I'm nearly out of another 5kg of 0.6mm MIG wire.

rust bucket ·

Kit in, modified the spring plates, hubs on and she's rolling on wheels! not quite low enough yet!

rust bucket ·

work on the cab before and after

rust bucket ·

This will fit in the bus

Scottkombi ·

Looks great.

Love your detail - the donk looks very nice - what size is it?

rust bucket ·

I cant take credit for the engine, a local guy here put it together and I just supplied the pearl white paint. As you see he has a far cleaner and larger garage than I. As for the specs its 1680cc with some minor performance parts including, heads, springs, torque cam, EMPI carby, so probably 75 hp at the wheels...

Scottkombi ·

Very nice.

I'm interested to see how the carby goes.

There are lots of options out there and most go with the twin carby set-up - so I wonder how well the twin system goes.

rust bucket ·

had to make room for the carby by moving some of the top hat section but then it fitted easily

rust bucket ·

finished off the front

rust bucket ·

very impressed with the quality of this window

rust bucket ·

Spent a few hours on the gear linkages, but then reverse and all 4 forward gears were working, so I went for a drive!

Hard to imagine that only 18 months ago it was rusting away in the paddock.

I've spent a lot of time and money researching and buying parts which has been fun.....here are some of the specs that will make it even more fun to drive....

VW 1960 Single Cab

1680 DP 12 v with balanced crank, torque cam, valve springs etc
EMPI twin 40mm MDF carby
GT exhaust
1968 Ball Joint front beam with bay window disc brakes
1970's IRS syncro gearbox from beetle 4.125 final ratio
New beetle CV at gearbox and new kombi CV at rear hub
1970's kombi front and rear hubs currently with standard 14 inch wheels
H4 Halogen lights

rust bucket ·

try and get it licensed this friday, wish me luck!!!🙂

rust bucket ·

😂

waltermitty ·

Bizarre ·

WOW ................ excellent work

just went and looked at the first couple of pics

rust bucket ·

Thanks guys, rusty gates next

rust bucket ·

Thought I'd update on my project - its been 2 years since my first post.

I got licensed on 1 September and been driving around since.

Anyone contemplating a similar project i.e. you do all the repairs you will need at least $30,000 goodluck🙂
