Been hunting for an early fasty secretly for years now until I kept spotting one turn up next door did it occur to me that I wanted one more than I thought and sooner! Turns out the neighbours friends had one, so it would randomly show up. I would hear it start up, run outside everytime and watch it drive off ha. Loved it.
So I began to hunt, I say hunt because there really isn't any early ones for sale. One or two on gumtree and other classifieds but they are chasing crazy money that I just could not justify. I started posting WTB listings in all the facebook groups and a few guys messaged me saying they would part with thiers. Again chasing too much coin for me.
One guy who works at a Perfomance VW place here in Melbourne said he had one here for a while that he was selling on behalf of a customer of his.
A fuel line had split and caused a fire in the engine. I looked at the photos and initially thought it was too much work. A couple of weeks went by, and I found myself going back to those photos and looking at them over and over. Every day. So I went out and took a look at it. Turns out it wasn't as bad as it looked.
It had the obvious fire damage to the engine and the rear panels but other than that she was all there. Very straight, minimal rust and a pretty cool rig.
Interior was all there, looks like it had been redone, red carpets / seats the lot. Will come up mint with a clean and some TLC.
Body has all been done too and resprayed at some stage. Again came up semi decent with a quick clean.
Anyway, I had it towed home to ours yesterday in the rain. And began cleaning it and dismantling the engine.
Plans will be to get it running, fix what needs to be fixed for a rwc. Then lower it on original wheels and have it as a fun weekend car on a nice sunny day. The ragtop is also super rad!
Couldn't be happier.
Here are some quick photos from yesterday. Enjoy.

That clean semi-shaven look of the back of your lowered fasty is very good.
Almost seems a pity to spoil it with a number plate.
Good luck, looks like it could be very nice.
Rob.

If you sell it to me now (uhhmmm, please? LOL!), this would then make the 4th ACVW I've rescued after fire damage! Hahahaha, I love them too!
It'll be a nice ride man, enjoy.

Oh really? so you've saved 3 from fire damage?? How does it keep happening?
Cheers mate, looking forward to it. Keen to get it running first and rwc. Then will work on cosmetic things.

Came off fine with a grinder and flappy disc ha 🙂

Time to clean this all up now, having removed all the ash underlay / carpet.
Any tips on the best solution here? To get it ready for paint.
wombatventures ·
Well done Mate. Welcome to the Type 3 Club.
Will be great to see it back on the road.
Type 3's are the Ducks Nuts!
Loving that ragtop too.

Wire brush or strip disk on a 4" grinder......be careful not to heat the panel & warp it....keep changing areas & you should be ok

pv370 ·
hey brookefromhamilton
i see from your post on samba you were asking about dash pads
i will dig up my contact info for john in west australia after work today and post it here for you
does a great job and they look very nice
see some pics iof mine before i installed it in the type 3 section under type 3 panelvan resto
i will have to take a pic of the panelvan dash now it in
Thanks man, found his number last night after posting that comment. Flicked him a message today, he is still making them. But I will need to save up my pennies. $660
pv370 ·
i dont think you will regret it.
i had my original dash reskinned and it was sh**house.
it shrunk the dash by half an inch. i know it doesnt sound much but the gauges wouldnt fit back in.
cost me $520 which i got back luckily...
its not the exact dash for the panelvan as i didnt have blank strip in the middle of the speaker grille but it looks and fits 100 times better than the reskin.

Small update :
Added a 1.5mm steel firewall today, sprayed the inside of it black with sound deadening spray paint.
Ignore Battery ( just holding it up because I didn't have an extra pair of hands to help.
Made a thin mdf piece to go over top and then have placed insualtion / sound deadening mat on top of this. Should be quiet hopefully!
Also tidied up the engine mounts:
Still hunting for an engine..

Box out, need to to cv boots, wheel bearings etc. Still can't crack that bloody axle nut, with the box in or off the car. I shall keep trying though..
Grabbed another 69' fasty. It was local and cheap and advertised as a running engine, just needed a battery and a key. So we hot wired it, with some time / persistence and start ya bastard we got her to fire up.
Will be pulling the engine / box out tomorrow hopefully and then putting it into the main one. The body on this second one was a bit of work.. the other fire damage one overall is in better nick.
I will take the bumpers, the popout passenger window, headlights etc off it and then try flick what's left.
Finally tidied up all underneath where it had burnt off and started to surface rust. Wire brushed it all and then used a rust converter / primer. Then coated it in an underpody paint, which sprayed really nicely and has a nice oem texture to it. Also sound deadened under the rear fender and removed the rust under the rear popout window. Trying to get this bloody popout window back in is a mega pain! Losing patience..
Here are some pics:
Also grabbed a rear bumper at the swap meet which came up alright with a quick steel wool. Will shine nice with a polish.

Noice! 👍

Nice work mate I'm currently semi restoring a 68 fastback too. Like you just focusing on the rw and get it on the road before I start playing with it. Be good to keep in contact mate I'm down in Melbourne. Not sure how to post pics from my phone here but I'll shoot you some pics soon. Keep up the good work. Joe

Been slack with updates on this but have done a lot since. She's back on the ground rolling! Wiring is all done, everything seems to work which is a plus. All of the IRS has been cleaned, painted and installed into the main one from the donor.
Gearbox has been cleaned and installed too, as with starter motor. New wiring etc to this as well. Hand brake sorted and adjusted. All cables are now in too which is good.
Windows are all in, panels all on. Interior almost there. Working on the dash at the moment. Considering recovering, found some vinyl that appears to look exactly the same as the original but will play around with this.
Sorted out both doors too, windows were not sliding right so replaced the reg / sliders. New door handles too 🙂
Currently working on the engine at the moment. Pulled it apart but didn't split the case. Drove fine was just leaking so wanted to sort that out. Grabbed a german gasket / seal kit and have begun cleaning and reinstalling.
After the engine I need to sort out the brakes and paint the boot area. Then it should be ready for RWC. After that I can start having some fun. Here are some pics..
On the ground again moving! with a push ha
Engine time:
Heads off:

Gauges refreshed. Cleaned / painted and polished.
Came up decent.

Few more pictures from the engine overhaul.
tinware all sandblasted ready for powdercoating:
$50 ebay score!

Nice work keep it up and us informed.
That vinyl does look good where did you get it?

Looking good- great work.
Can you tell me how difficult it was to remove the fan housing? I have removed all bolts on mine but can't split the housing to remove fan the front half to get the fan off. I think the dowels seem to be binding. It feels fragile so idont want to force it.
Also, is there a trick to removing the fan- is a puller required or will it simply slide off?

Cheers mate, a local guy I found on gumtree. Old guy who wholesales to all the trimmers. Really cheap. Only issue is, is it's near impossible to wrap the dash in one. Around the gauges are a nightmare.

Fan housing seemed fairly straight forward I thought. The fan I screwed two bolts into the front of it, there were two threaded holes. This pushed it out.

New goodies, empi 40's hpmx:
Engine is almost back together, tinware has come back from the powdercoaters too.
Heater exchangers came up not too bad..

Now to get her bolted in and tuned! Then brakes..

Update:
Started spraying the boot area today (yellow is primer) ready for the engine, which is now finished..
brookfromhamilton ·
Last of the rust repairs.. PITA spot to deal with around grills.. sanding / dremel was tricky.
Primer surfacer on, will leave it primered. One day I will do a full respray but for now the rough / rat/ burnt look ha
brookfromhamilton ·
Dash back from the trimmer in NZ, going in and looking awesome. Just need to push the gauges in properly.
brookfromhamilton ·
Paint in the boot is on and I have started to carpet the boot area with a very similar carpet I found to the rest of the car.
Almost engine in time!
brookfromhamilton ·
And we are in! Very happy, just need to connect up fuel, wiring and let the battery charge. Hopefully try fire it up tomorrow!
