I just bought this 56 Oval, I found it in a driveway abut 10 ks from my house, I used to see it under a tarp but a few weeks ago the tarp blew of so I saw it was an Oval. Funny thing is two forum members regularly drive past the house where it was. Not sure what colour to paint it, thinking a US colour Capri Blue. So I will get it back on the road some nice wheels and a little bit lower
It has been modified a little,
1600 single port motor
later synchro trans
adjustable front beam
KMac front sway bar
4 stud Beetle front disc brakes and Type 3 rear drums
the dash has holes in for gauges, a tacho and fuel gauge, not sure if I will fill this in or not
1303Steve ·
The oval has an odd looking fuel sender.
This is the blue Im thinking of doing it in
REDKG ·
I'm sure you will do it justice, whatever direction you take. 36hp or something a little more lively. Keep it stock looking, nice choice of colour.
1303Steve ·
Thanks Brian, I will see what the 1600 single port is like, its a Type 3 case so I assume its 1600, it has a Holley Bugspray on it, yuk
Flintstones ·
Great score Steve.
Is this going to get the GL treatment? 😉
Cheers
D
vw54 ·
you have too much time on your hands
I carnt even get going on mine
yes good score and saved another one hows the rust
vw54 ·
did you get all the glass n other bits for it
1303Steve ·
I got everything except door trims and front windscreen, rust is pretty good he spent money getting it fixed a while ago.
Dino this will get just wheels and paint, sort of Cal Look I guess
Bizarre ·
Can you graft some struts in there ???
Seriously- nice score Steve.
1303Steve ·
My son has donated some wheels from his Jap wheel collection, he has about 60 pairs, all in 15 inch. I will get the bolt pattern on the Beetle changed to 4x114.3 and have suitable sized lips put on the centres.
I had no keys fro the car so I went to St George Locksmiths in Rockdale and he blanks that he cut to suit my locks
cnfabo ·
They will look really cool
1303Steve ·
thanks
MR930 ·
Nice. I often regret selling my mint green oval.
1303Steve ·
OK, car is stripped, panels are at the panel beater, just waiting on the blaster now as I want him to blast the area around the brake master cylinder reservoir and the inside the grills under the back window, Im pretty sure I will paint it a US colour Capri Blue
1303Steve ·
went for a drive up and down the driveway before I pulled the motor out.
I found a few stupid things that have been done to this car, it has Type 3 rear brakes, someone fitted them with the handbrakes cables entering the backing plate at the rear, the new exhaust was fitted without heat riser blank offs and no fibre rings on the J pipes and the generator was fitted 90 degrees out
vw54 ·
they may have used the early backing plates instead of Type 3
1303Steve ·
maybe but I dont think early backing plates would work Type 3 brakes
1303Steve ·
I saw a Subaru the other day in this colour, I think it would look good on the oval, sometimes old paint formulas dont mix correctly with modern tinters
Flintstones ·
Reminds me of French Blue, just a tad lighter in tone.
1303Steve ·
Ive seen a few Subarus on the road in this colour and I like it
1303Steve ·
Hi
Car is at the panel beater now.
My rear guards needed to much work so I went next door to H&M Ferman and bought some new 40HP rear guards. The holes for the taillights are in a different position on the 40HP rear guards, does anybody have a accurate measurement on the tail light holes for snowflake taillights?
The guards that came with with car had welded and re drilled holes, nothing is worse than taillights not in the original position
Steve
vw54 ·
come and measure my Oval ones no taillights on at moment
take a paper template as well or a bit of cardboard
1303Steve ·
Thanks will do
1303Steve ·
As usual the panel beater has some nice cars in the shop, there was an old Rolls, a 3 wheel BMW, a R35 Skyline and an AMG convertible
REDKG ·
VW oval, R35 and BMW 3 wheeler nice cars. The AMG mass produced " badge "for old guys and hairdressers with too much money and no driving skills. The RR , depends if it is a real one or overpriced BMW. Many BMW collectors try to deny the existence of the 3 wheeler. Anyway I'm sure the workmanship should be excellent and choice of colour is spot on. (even if not a VW code)
hellbugged ·
Is that Subaru colour the same as the wrx that also wears either that code or a very close match?
1303Steve ·
I think they did use it on WRXs, its much more subtle in real life, its seems to pop in photos
hellbugged ·
Cool
"hyper blue" comes up on a quick google search for light blue wrx
Yes looks better in the flesh, I had eyed that colour off with the daughter when they came out
We spotted a very similar
hue on another brand that had a bit more vintage/pascal feel
1303Steve ·
I was thinking of Capri Blue a 58 colour, but I was reading on the samba about people having trouble getting it mixed and looking right
1303Steve ·
painting has started, Capri Blue it is
Bizarre ·
Noice colour!
vw54 ·
They were quick with the panel work
nbturbo ·
Very good choice.
vw54 ·
Have you got the car back
1303Steve ·
Getting it back next weekend I think, I have to put Davids Beetle into storage 1st
1303Steve ·
some crappy photos that don't do it justice and I bought some cool vintage gauges to fill up the holes in the dash. cant wait to lower it
1303Steve ·
Picked up the oval today, very pleased with the paint job
Flintstones ·
So your son drew the short straw 😀
1303Steve ·
My son is building a garage, just talking with council now. So we put his car into storage
hulbyw ·
Great colour choice. Looking good
Cheers
1303Steve ·
thanks
1303Steve ·
Hi
Been working on and off on the Oval, my other bug and my Jap car take up most of my free time.
My Oval came with a 4 stud disc brake conversion, this would have moved the front wheels out a fair bit and limited wheel choice so Ive bought a 4 inch narrowed air beam from Skinned Knuckles and a rear airbag setup as well.
This how I've decided to have my wheels finished, not my wheels
1303Steve ·
I want to run a decent wheel on the front, not a fan of the sucked in narrowed beam look, so I fitted some lock stops to the drop spindles
vw54 ·
that will stop the wheels rubbing on the guards
1303Steve ·
thats the plan
reub ·
Looks awesome Steve.
Thanks for sharing mate. And Happy New Year as well
Reubs
1303Steve ·
Thanks Reub, happy new year to you as well, just got the Skinned Knuckle rear bag setup, very happy with it
REDKG ·
Happy new year. Looking good. Is this one going with a VW engine ?
1303Steve ·
Thanks you too. It came with a single port 1500 or 1600 which I will use, eventually I will fit the 1904 from my sons Beetle

Sweet 👍🏻
1303Steve ·
did a wheel test fit the other night
beetleboyjeff ·
The tread looks a little low on that front one. lol
1303Steve ·
they are low profile tyres
beetleboyjeff ·
I actually meant the one with no tyre on it. lol
1303Steve ·
so did I
1303Steve ·
Hi
I bought some LED inserts for my Snowflake tail lights, I just assembled them and I found that the gasket inside between lens and the defuser was still in great condition after more than 60 years
I spoke to a friend of mine the other as to how to wire up semaphores in my car, Phil has extensive knowledge of VW electrical systems.
I have a Smiths electronic speedo for my car and as the original speedo had a signal coming back from the semaphores to turn n the indicator light in the speedo a bit of trickery was needed
I'm also going to run front and rear indicators and will use two flasher cans to do this.
A few days after talking to Phil (AA003) a wiring kit and wiring diagram with correct VW wire colours arrived in the mail
Still a long way to go on the Oval but I like to have things nailed down ahead of time
AA003 ·
This will not work with a standard VW speedo. For a standard VW speedo the diodes will need to be reversed.
1303Steve ·
Just picked up my wheels from Barrel Bros. in Milperra, very happy with them, diamond cut centres and polished lips coated in clear powder coat
vw54 ·
nice
hulbyw ·
Look really good!
vw54 ·

1303Steve ·
Hi
Long time no updates.
I retired last August so I'm getting stuck back into my Oval. I've been accepted to take the car to Summernats 2025 so the pressure is on.
I've been chipping away at the car still lots to do. Its booked in for interior in late October.
Motor is now reconditioned 1916. I'm fitting EFI and a SC12 supercharger to it using a custom plenum and Mexican EFI manifolds
beetleboyjeff ·
Ooh, that sounds good.
hulbyw ·
Think I read on the Samba the Mexi manifolds are restrictive? No idea whether correct or not but maybe something to check?
Cheers
1303Steve ·
They are about as restrictive as stock carby manifold ends. The centre section has a very small throttle body but I'm not using that, a custom plenum will go in place of it.
It's just a cruiser that will make some cool noises
hulbyw ·
Excellent!
1303Steve ·
I'm running a deadhead fuel system or non return so ran a -6 line today
I'm also using LS truck coils. Needed some longer leads as I'm running the coils behind the fan housing. I tried everywhere to buy them so Amazon came to the rescue. I have 4 spare leads as I use LS coils on my other Beetle but they were too short. These ones will be easier fit VW spark plug boots to
REDKG ·
will we see it at Valla ?
1303Steve ·
unfortunately it wont be ready for Valla. Aiming for Summernats on the 1st January
Engine specifications
1916. Stock heads 110 Engle cam (not ideal for a supercharged) and 1.25 rockers, Vintage speed exhaust. 4 LS coils, Dubshop crankangle sensor and CB cam position sensor. Haltech Nexus 2 ecu. 485cc injectors with a 5th injector before the supercharger and drive by wire.
SC12 supercharger with custom pulleys.
Best 98 RON run was 98.5 kW or 132 kW at 5550 rpm and 80% throttle.
We then swapped to E85 and did a few power runs but a gasket leak at the inlet manifold prevented anymore power runs, but it still made 108kW or 145.6 hp at the wheels on 90% throttle.
The best thing about the drive by wire is that the throttle can be used to limit boost. The drive by wire is also used as a rev limiter, it rolls the throttle off near redline before a fuel cut
