Sydney Dyno Day (Sunday 7th December)

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/13716/sydney-dyno-day-sunday-7th-december

HotRodMatt ·

The Sydney Dyno Day is offical!

Sunday the 7th of December at the Custom Bugs and Buses shop.

Cost will be $35 per car. After all cars have had their first run any subsequent runs will be FREE! (a $2 charge will apply if you want a print out).

There will be a sausage sizzle running and the CBB Drag car will go on the Dyno around midday.

A parts clearance sale will also be on - shop parts at swap meet prices! Heaps of panels, glass, mechanical components, lights etc...

This is a fantastic opportunity to either simply give your car a power run to see just what sort of honest at the wheels power your car is making, or to tune your car for optimum and safe performance.

If you elect to have your graph display Power and LAMBDA you can tune your car between runs - you could be runing rich and losing power or running dangerously lean and risking serious damage at full noise...

HotRodMatt ·

Oh yeah... Audis are welcome too....

XXX-1.8T ·

ill be there with some VW and Audi mates ok Matt

:bounce

XXX-1.8T ·

Question Matt:

Can it do 4wd as some of the Audi guys have quattro?

HotRodMatt ·

It's a two wheel drive dyno...

If you wanna remove the fuses you can run 2-wheel drive...

XXX-1.8T ·

but the A4 have torsen 4wd which is mechanical theres no fuses!

Only the S3/TT has Haldex which is electronic

so no go for A4/S4 guys 🙁

XXX-1.8T ·

I have around 5 golf GTi's and more to come 🙂

Also a couple of Audi's as well 🙂

HotRodMatt ·

Cool sounds like there's gonna be a fair bit of water there.....

So who's coming with air?

XXX-1.8T ·

where are the aircooled guys 🙂

speedster356 ·

I'll be there Matt, I've got some ideas going into the Speedster engine beforehand.:thumb

XXX-1.8T ·

sweet cant wait to see the Speedster again:kiss

And the watercooled guys cant wait either:bounce

Peter Leonard ·

hope mine's run in by then 😉
BWAHAHAHHA

HotRodMatt ·

New engine is in! Can't wait to get the bus up there on the rollers!

OvalGlen ·

I will pay $37 I like to file these historic documents " Glenn's first dyno ".:beer

HotRodMatt ·

You only pay the $2 for printouts after your first run Glen.

The first run's printout is included in the $35 for the whole day ... as many runs as you can manage

OvalGlen ·

Sounds like A " Tuning Fest " to me,,
but I'll still be paying $37....
thats $35 for the first run with print out and $2 for the run when I get it all sorted....
sweeeeett....!

HotRodMatt ·

You're confident Glen. All sorted in one run? man you must be a jet/emulsion tube/timing wizard!

vw_carrera ·

If I have moved to Sydney by then, be rest assured I'll bring my Type III and Glen could tune my car whilst he's at it 😉

OvalGlen ·

Hey , I'm expecting to get 3 or 4 runs with what appears to be the low numbers attending.
Cant wait.

OvalGlen ·

Have we got enough Numbers to make it a day ??

HotRodMatt ·

Yeah it's official!

OvalGlen ·

Great....!

OvalGlen ·

anybody else coming?

LOWBUG ·

I'll be I'll be

decked dubby ·

I will be there.:beer

Bizarre ·

I will be there

But i want i refund if Matt's kombi makes more ponies than mine!
NO way is a K'dud gunna beat MY magnificent Webers!!!

😀

HotRodMatt ·

LOL @ Barry...

What were you getting before?

I suspect I'll hit the 60s. (Well I hope!)

Hoping the big valves will help.... Which reminds me it needs to be serviced!

Bizarre ·

61.1 last time

speedster356 ·

I'm hoping for 90?:thumb

XXX-1.8T ·

Cant wait should be a good day:bounce

I think i have around 10 watercooled dubs and 5 Audis

Cant wait:beer

check out the response:

VW Vortex Australia Forum

thanx for organising it Matt 🙂

twoguns ·

well i think my bus will probably still be there... all dirty and stained from all the work. so if thats the case then i am in, but i hope to have it b4 then.....MIKE.
:bounce:bounce please! please! please!

Oasis ·

Hoping for double figures:bounce:bounce

OvalGlen ·

mmmm getting closer, a super 90 from
the speedster.... cant wait.!:bounce

HotRodMatt ·

Realling hoping we'll get some of these Pobjoy steroids engines there.

Getting them on the rollers running in Shootout mode (no cheating possible) and see if they can crack 100 ponies.

Craig Torrens ·

Well I won't be there, and you won't believe my reason😀.........................................well my grandmothers 92 birthday actually:party

So If all Dyno Dynamic Dyno's running the SHOOTOUT software are as accurate as each other (said on this forum) then I will have to organise running my car on one closer to where I live!

I have viewed their Web page and have located a Dyno Dynamics operator at Berowra. This is one of a hand full that has been Fully Accredited with the SHOOTOUT 03 software. CBB was not listed, not too sure if Dyno Dynamics are slow at updating their listing or if CBB are not accredited with SHOOTOUT 03??? any ideas?

The Web site also talks about the benefits of the SHOOTOUT 03 setup etc for anyone interested :thumb

Berowra will not be able to fit me in for a couple of weeks, but I will book anyway😀

Then when Jak and the others go to SAS I will go and run my car and compare the results 😎

HotRodMatt ·

Less than a week to go!

"I have viewed their Web page and have located a Dyno Dynamics operator at Berowra. This is one of a hand full that has been Fully Accredited with the SHOOTOUT 03 software. Yes they are slow at updating.... not everyone can have the shootout software...

The Dyno Day WILL be using Shooutout mode.

KOM123 ·

Think I might take the camper out there Matt out of curiousity 🙂

XXX-1.8T ·

hey Matt what time does it start?

HotRodMatt ·

No real starting time but I'd be looking to be there by at least 9am if you want a few runs...

speedster356 ·

I'm going over to bcal's place (the hot rod forum) to pick him up and we are going to cruise over. He's bringing the 28 Ford with the Alfa twin cam engine. I'm over at his place about 7:30 ish. See ya there.

HotRodMatt ·

Damn, I wish my chop was more than a shell on a dolly and a chassis at another place...

matara ·

I might pop along as a spectator if the Mrs hasn't gone into labour!!

Steve

HotRodMatt ·

Bring her along ... I'm sure standing by the dyno helped my boy (5 weeks) on his road to an appreciation of vws...

speedster356 ·

I'm going over to bcal's place (the hot rod forum) to pick him up and we are going to cruise over.
Matt we need to get a photo of bcals car with a bunch of VWs........and threaten to publish on the hot-rod forum, that has to be worth a few dollars to keep us silent!

HotRodMatt ·

From some of the things he's said on there I don't think it'd be risking your friendship...

"I especially love the look of those early ones with the little back window and with bigs 'n' littles to give them the hotrod stance.
There's a lot of potential with these things, especially as a cheap way for young guys to start rodding."

"I think it's great that so many of you have come out in support of Matt.
I just hope that Mr Model A's comments haven't scared him all the way back to the Vdub Forum.
As for Ratdubs.
What a great concept.
Chop 'em up and bring 'em on I say."

"I wish you guys would stop posting pictures of cool Vdubs
This stuff looks like way too much fun"

"I might even be tempted to give something like this a go myself one day
Cheap, relatively easy to build, easy to register, seats five etc etc.
Tho I think I’d need to grow an extra couple of layers of skin first."

See he'll be converted one day!

speedster356 ·

He has had endure some flack from the "traditional" hot rod guys over his choice of power plant. I mean it doesn't fit the "formula" for a rod, IE: 350/turbo400/9 inch.......but boy it handles like a sports car.
Much the same as the VW formula .....lowered/BRM/roof rack/swamp cooler.........

jenz58 ·

OK I'm there...:o

In something cheap, rented and non VW...🙁

Gotta see what you guys go on about....

Coming to Sydney to visit VVW......good excuse for time off:thumb

vw54 ·

thought U were going to SUN yrself ???

jenz58 ·

I am going to...🙂

Heard there was going to be stuff for sale...so coming to check it out...retail therapy VW style:thumb

Should be able to hit the beach in the afternoon..

A girl can change her plans so easily😀

Have been studying my map already....:jesus

speedster356 ·

Whats the address of CBB, bcal needs it to get a permit as he is hotrod regisisted only.

I'll be there too, got my engine back together again after a quick big end bearing change, all seems cool now.

HotRodMatt ·

Only a few days now.

Found out yesterday there's gonna be a Dyno Dynamics rep there on Sunday too! Bit of a bonus!

Don't forget the big parts clearance... heaps of good stuff going at swap meet prices. Even two split ute projects...

HotRodMatt ·

Here's a map...

OvalGlen ·

I'll be there as long as the Diff holds Out -
Bit of Whine Now..!!!!!!!!!!!
but its alright cause thirds working Ok at present🙁

HotRodMatt ·

The run is probably better done in 3rd anyway Glen....

LOWBUG ·

You will be I can't wait to see the look on the faces of those of you who havn't had you cars on a dyno, and hearing it have the crap reved out of it.

It sounds worse that it is and Mike does know what he's doing.

It will still be funny to watch people cringe.

Craig Torrens ·

Dave Becker wrote:I'll be there too, got my engine back together again after a quick big end bearing change, all seems cool now.

Is this the same motor you ran with in the Drags ??? If so would be good to see how much horsepower is needed for low 13 passes😀

HotRodMatt ·

Hey guys, among the stuff for sale there in the clearance are two new Micheline 135s...

jenz58 ·

I need to get to bed!!!!....need to get up at 4 ish to catch my flight.... Sydney roads are bad enough...but without sleep:o😀

jakriz ·

Make sure that all specs of motors with their hp outputs are posted for those of us that can't make it.
I want to see a stock stroke engine with 100hp at the wheels!!

Big thumbs up to Dave! What a sweet sounding and running car! Even got a round of applause!

All runs done in Shootout mode on a new dyno freshly calibrated. Even had a Dyno Dynamics rep lending a hand.

Much thanks to Mike and CBB for hosting the day. They did the price right for us Veedubbers and looked after everyone with everyone who wanted another shot at the rollers getting one. Cars from a wide variety of builders and shops turned up showing that the dyno day was an event for owners, regardless of who built the engine.

Lookout for another one when the new shop opens next year!

Thanks to everyone who came along, not just those who went on the rollers but those who came to watch. It was an excellent social day as well as a a top automotive extravaganza!

I'm sure everyone's ears are beginning to unblock by now from the drag car going up for a run...

Pics soon.

LOWBUG ·

Wow Matt you didn't waste any time getting the results out there

LOWBUG ·

To Mike for the day, and sorting out a leaning out prob I didn't now I had and also finding another 14 ponnies in just an hour of messing around.😀:thumb

jenz58 ·

I had a great day catching up with people and seeing some of these rides, I hear about, in action:thumb

Scored a couple of nice exterior door handles for Bel as well...:kiss

There was an amazing turnout of people and cars....

Internet Cafe across the road from where I'm staying...couldn't help myself...on the way to find food🙂

jakriz ·

Dave, thats f*^%king awesome!!! I take my hat off to u! Just can't beat the stroke!

So Matt, thats all of them? No 1916's with 120@ the wheels? not even 100@ the wheels? makes me feel better about my 93.6 then.
Sounds like it was an awesome day, wish I could have been there.
regards
Jak

twoguns ·

well htere ya go, huh!

hey matt what happened to yours? mike must have been pissed, espesh since mine wasnt down there. after certainly seeing some of those figures and me not having my bus there.🙁

vw54 ·

Did they give out a figure for Mikes Drag car ???

LOWBUG ·

He did two runs with it, as its still being set up it was running lean and didn't wan't to do any damage, but we still saw near 200 ponnies and the methonol fumes to go with it.

Hey Dave why didn't you bring the smoothy out to play

Menangler ·

Big thanks to Matt, Mike and the boys for a great day,
My eyes are still burning from Mikes car,:thumb

Hey Pete, (speedster 356) hows the hangover? you looked like a bag of sh#$ man! 😀

HotRodMatt ·

Since the accelerator pedal wasn't going to play properly and open up the carbs I wasn't gonna miss a run on the rollers...

It might have needed a helping hand but at least the rollers were moving!

And before anyone raises the safety issue the occupant IS wearing a 5 point harness!

twoguns ·

well matt. i am hoping to have my bus back down there next saturday for its first service and another run on the dyno. am quite excited considering what i know so far and how it went on the way home.

i will also have some pics and stuff sorted so i can post on forum.😀

speedster356 ·

Fantastic turn out! From what I remember I think I was having fun? Looks like it's back to some tuning on the Webers, down about 6.5 from the last run. Running way lean run.
Thanks Dave, yeah the noise of the drag car run was enough for me and my head so I slinked off home for a kip. They don't call those drinks "brain tumors" for nothing I guess.

lugnuts ·

Hiya dudes sounds like a great day was had by almost all, congrats esp. to Dave 143.6 horsies, how is this possible Dave 😀 ,is this a STREET car,can you give us plebs an insight into what goes into such a monster as this,PLEASE :o

XXX-1.8T ·

Awesome day guys thanx Matt for organising it - all I have to say is Daves car is dyno God of the aircooled!

My watercooled mates said if you ever want to sell it they would buy it for sure 🙂

Cant wait till the next meet 🙂

vw54 ·

I wanted to try and get some VW work done on a Type 3 i am building for # 2 son... so i decided tro stay at home n work.

The Smoooothieee wouldnt have gotten over 30hp at the wheels... not much point in running it on the dyno... except for laugh...

Sounds like everyone had a great day

KOM123 ·

"Except for a laugh", that's why I put the camper on and got an awesome 49.8!! Although the chart did indicate some tuning work on the Webers is required but I had a fun day anyway 🙂

VWs + sausage sandwiches = :thumb

Bizarre ·

Yep

Thanks CBB!

I will add that it must be pretty close to the SAS day and comparrisons can be drawn. I had done some minor jet changes between last year and now and i pulled 61.1 last year and 62.1 this year. Although i am not making more power i am running truckloads smoother.

Without starting anything i will say the the CBB was a better day.
More room to watch and the Dyno Dynamic man was there to ask questions. You could get them to happily press buttons to give torque, power and air/fuel ratio.
I did another jet change on the day and then did a second pull. Yep - helped heaps in smoothness

Dave - yep. Such a smooth looking car. So unassuming!
What blew me away was Dave took the stinger off and lost 15-20 ponies! Twas a good learing day

jakriz ·

Sorry to hear that u didn't enjoy SAS Barry, the second time we went we got all the readings that we wanted. They did answer all my questions & the reason u are not allowed in the dyno room is because of work cover. CBB must have insurance for all of u to be in there. Must cost some bucks.

Funny Barry, your reading went up but Peter & Costa went down from memory?

Jak

Bizarre ·

Sorry to hear that u didn't enjoy SAS Barry,

Never said that Jak

I enjoy ALL these days - just saying that there was more room and peoples and stuff at CBB

As for Pete and Costa cant answer. I think Pete had been tweeking more than me so that is where i got the constant denominator theory from

All DYno days are good if it provides the information you want.
For me it did do that.

Well sorry to burst you're bubble Jak, but today was the day Greg Ward and myself ran our 1916cc cars on a Dyno both producing over 100 HP

My hillclimb 1916cc beetle produced 111.6hp and Greg's produced 108.8hp. We did it at Berowra (Dumar Auto Technics Pty Ltd) at a new SHOOTOUT 03 Dyno Dynamic dyno .

Greg's was running a lot richer than mine and this was affecting his overall result.

So at whet revs was the power made for my Pobjoy 1916cc ?? as follows

3400rpm = 62hp
3800rpm = 70hp
4200rpm = 82hp
4600rpm = 88hp
5000rpm = 100hp
5400rpm = 104hp
5800rpm = 108hp
6200rpm = 110hp
and 111.6hp at 6400rpm
7000rpm = 108hp

So it was not 120hp max Hp, but I'm happy with 111.6hp :thumb

Oh yeah, done in shootout mode so this should be a direct comparison, so I'm told 😀

jakriz ·

No bubble around me Craig, it burst a long time ago.
Fantastic dyno results, gives me a little hope yet with the new heads coming. How come u didn't take them out to 8000rpm?
The 1916cc that was at CBB that got 91@ the wheels, is that one of the super duper Pobjoy motors?? or was it a home made jobby?
regards
Jak

HotRodMatt ·

The 91 was a pobjoy steroids.

Run on a freshly calibrated new Dyno. With a DYNO DYNAMICS rep there as well as the qualified owner. Run in Shootout.

Craig Torrens ·

the dyno operator took mine to 7500rpm but the power fell away so no use going further. went down to 104hp at 7500rpm, so I guess the high fan speed affects the top end. I only rev it to 8000rpm when I'm not wanting to change gears between corners etc. So for straight line speed I now know to change at about 7000rpm
:thumb

Troy's 1916 is a Steroids combo, but apparently was running very lean on the dyno Day, and Mike would not run it past 6000rpm on the day. So he needs to do a bit of tuning !! Should get about 4HP more over 6000rpm and with a jet change probably another 4 or 5hp , or over 100hp total ! Troy was also using the standard VW pulley, Greg and myself use a power pulley for the street (and now supersprints) due to the revs, so this may also give an extra 5hp ????

Imagine if I put a stinger on !!! another 15-20hp or about 130hp at the wheels, not bad for standard stroke and under 2000cc😀

Barry, for learning purposes, a stinger will give you about 1/2 sec in the quarter mile.

HotRodMatt ·

And we know from Dave's stinger/muffler swap that almost 20 ponies are in the breathing out!

Craig Torrens ·

just show's how much horsepower can be gained by setting your motor up for the drags compared to the street. Next time I will have to try :thumb

So Daves motor produced about 123hp in street setup??? without stinger?

jakriz ·

Keiths 2387cc which was slapped together with low 8.5 compression & cracked 041 heads, untuned made 119@ the wheels, imagine if was tuned & sorted with some real nice heads! It made it's power at 5500rpm as well.
Do u think that thats as much as u can get with the 1916cc Craig? Is there anymore that Stan can do?
regards
Jak

Menangler ·

It made 126.6 with the muffler, but it is an offset "in and out" cheap muffler I put on it to keep it quiet for the street.

I just posted the engine specs in members rides for anyone interested.

Craig Torrens ·

Still more Jak :thumb You need to remember that my motor was built to run hillclimb, not Dyno days or produce maximum HP from the 1916 combo. I have spoken to Stan in the past regarding more HP, and this can be acheived with a Cam change , Bigger carbies, and a few other pobjoy "secrets"😀

Drag motor performance (High HP) and everyday street motors are different combinations, time I did a Drag combo:thumb

BIG :thumb:thumb UP FOR THE DYNO DAY

Congrat Dave that was on impressive dyno pull. Just read the spec and all I can say is well done must be something in the old magnetos us old guys missed when they first came out.

Craig you need to take a chill pill man. Although I did not have a car to run on the dyno at CBB I must say that it apeared to me that MIKE had nothing but the upmost of respect for every car and its engine that went onto the rollers. He ran each engine to what ever revs the customer wanted or until it stoped making power. I dont understand why you didnt take advantage of the $35.00 power run with figures that you quote ? I would be proud to participate in a VW only dyno day.

I was so suprised after speaking to Mike and the dyno rep Harry I think it was , that Mike had only been using the dyno for 3 months. Congrats to Mike and all the CBB guys I saw on the day it was a very professional and relaxed day.

😉

P.S the pub around the corner was great too

LOWBUG ·

I've been to other dyno's, and I'm over the big horse power number thing.

My car makes respectable power and thats good enough for me.

Keep in mind a Dyno machine is an engine tuning device, horse power is just a by-product of a well tune engine.

Torque makes your wheels spin not hosre power.

Now get over it and enjoy your ride.

Why do I need to take a chill pill ???????

I think Mike ran a fantastic day for all that attended, and thanks to Matts work for helping to promote it. Mike did not run Troy's motor past 6000rpm as it was running to lean and could have done serious damage, :thumb up for Mike in having respect for someone else's motor.
Troy's cam is the same as Greg Wards, so I know where they power is made. I was not blaming Mike, just making the point that the motor was not run at full potential for the combo.

I did not run as I was at my grandmother's 92nd birthday, so I made sure I went to a compatible Dyno Dynamics Dyno. Everybody wanted me to post figures of my 1916, I do, and now I cop it as well.😠

Well said, that's why I have never put my car on a Dyno, don't care. I just did it because I was sick of everybody claiming it would not get over 100hp, and others saying I had something to hide😠

vw54 ·

Keep in mind a Dyno machine is an engine tuning device, horse power is just a by-product of a well tune engine.
Well said !!!!:P:P

fullnoise ·

Recently I've been playing around with the spark in my engine and it feels like a different car. It's so much smoother and responsive and it absolutely sings at the top end.

Previously I'd put the sloppiness in the engine tune down to the carbs.

I'm looking forward to another run on the dyno just to see what difference a better spark makes.

Judging by the dyno results from CBB there are a few out of tune engines.

The good things about these dyno readings is that it will make people concentrate on tuning their engines rather than just going for bigger heads and cams etc to improve their horsepower.

My street eliminators made 76 hp and my unported 044s made 83.3 hp. I'm sure I can get close to 90 with a well tuned engine and a few more lessons learned. I'm starting to see that it's all in the combo.

Aside from the bitchiness this is a very interesting post. Perhaps there needs to be a permanent dyno thread.

Well done Craig (and Stan) for getting 111.6 out of the 1916. I'm sure Greg's engine would be close with correct jetting.

Pity I got to look after the Kids, they would not let me stay longer (they were pulling the inside of the car apart) Jenz is a witness.

Getting them on the rollers running in Shootout mode (no cheating possible) and see if they can crack 100 ponies.

Well 121.5hp was just recorded at CBB from a POBJOY STEROIDS on the weekend. It was "run up" several times to confirm the figures. Thanks to Mike for his tuning efforts:thumb

This motor is a full warranty POBJOY SPEC 1916cc with a street legal muffler and a standard pulley.
121hp from a Pobjoy steroids has now been confirmed :thumb😉

30 hp more at the wheels form a jet change.where can i get some of those jets??
thats more than your "race" motor?
whats with that???

Craig Torrens ·

well Stan has always quoted 120hp.

You buy jets from a carby shop:P

My "race" motor will be pumping more power soon, jet change and then dyno run.
Its all in the Combo :thumb

jakriz ·

didn't your dyno operator say your car was perfect???

Craig Torrens ·

yes he did say that it had a good fuel to air ratio, but I will change the jets to the same as Troy's and will see what the results are. If this does not get the results then its off to Mikefor a tune.

Might be worth you going to CBB Jak to see if you can crack the 100hp with your stroker.

The grey and white supercharged 2L kombi belongs to Derek Brock. It's now metallic blue and white. (CBB built engine)

They are part of the tie down mechanism for the dyno.
