How much for your run of the mill steroids 1916cc??

Bizarre 路

Do these come with Webers or Kads?

1303 路

Anyone have an idea on the ballpark H.P output of the steriods engine?

kombi_kid 路

i think her was talking the other day approx 100 BHP
cheers
rhys

jakriz 路

I've got an old magazine in which he states they have 100hp at the wheels......

56astro 路

125 hp is what I've heard, so 100 at the wheels sounds pretty close.

:o

VWCOOL 路

I think that's for a 'base' 1916.. the biggies are more

Bizarre 路

VWCOOL wrote:I think that's for a 'base' 1916.. the biggies are more
I would be surpised :o

We have just (well a couple this year) had a Dyno Day and there was a couple of Pobjoy motors there in various forms

NO 1916 or sub 2L made 100 ponies at the wheels - so i cant see how a base 1916 would

Correct me if i am wrong but a base is 040 heads, NON CW crank Kads and a near stock cam??

I think the base would be 70 on a good day

56astro 路

Blue74L

Yep you are wrong. The stage 1 or base does have a CW crank. That's why they spin so freely and smooth, and last so long.

The cam being close to stock? Well I'm not sure but they have good grunt from next to no revs all the way to about 5000 - 5500rpm, kicking in at about 3200. Very drivable! But if ya want more, go the steroids.

Dubnut,

As mentioned above, the best thing to do is ring Stan 02 6650 9616.

It would be wrong of people, who are not employees of the Man, to start quoting prices. Surely you can understand that. :thumb

The 'base' Kadron equipped engine doesn't have a CW crank as, despite common opinion, with proper assembly it's not required at this performance level. But the 'steroids' and hillclimb engines do!

MickH 路

Sorry, you are incorrect. I have a "base" 1916 and it has a counterweighted crank. Was given the choice of what I wanted on the engine when I ordered it. Had the choice of Kadron or webber carbs also. Only difference in the "steroid" engine was the cam profile and the nitrated crank, which I felt I did not require for my purpose.:bounce My "spare" engine is a steroid..........have not needed it yet!!

Bizarre 路

does.....doesnt.....does........doesnt........does

:P:P

Alls i was going on is an old VW Aust mag that did a story on Stans motors. Pretty sure it was the same one as has Project Panza in. I rang him up after that and asked a few questions.

Seems like it is an up grade option - or a cost save option if going the other way

MickH 路

Bet you were on the phone for a while!!!! He likes to have a chat!!馃槑

Mine does too ... but I think you'll find it's an extra-cost option

HotRodMatt 路

No way the base 1916 pobjoy is making 100 ponies at the wheels!

Not a chance.

70(ish) is more likely - if it has been ported and tickled a bit...

MickH 路

Like I said...Was given the choice of what I wanted:bounce

-----'Or is this another thread of "something for sale but Im noyt going to tell you how much it is"-----

Yeah I think it is that kinda thread.

Im interested how much. Ballpark. I KNOW it will differ with spec. Use, etc.

I will never buy an engine from Stan. Not for any dislike for the man. Hell he has my utmost respect simply from a photo Iv seen of him in an old vw mag torquing up a glandnut wearing an MRA windcheater. Its just that I would build myself. If I wanted a motorsport engine I would probably have called him already. I am simply curious what an engine of that calibre costs. Yes I could ring him but that would waste his time and he runs a businessmaking vw engines by hand. So through my altruism I am ensuring the 15 minutes of crap he would talk with me is going into another piece of handcrafted VW product. So I feel good about myself. Kool karma to me!馃榾

thank god its friday........馃榾馃榾馃榾

What is it about the 1916 that always causes such intense bickering.

Read this. It might help to explain the intense bickering.

MickH 路

Here we go again.........................:cry

Boozer 路

geeez...for $5000 i'd rather stick to my reliable(mostly) old 1500sp.:o i don't think i could ever justify spending that much on a engine, even if it did give me unbvleivable performance.

Bizarre 路

Wait till you drive one!

Old technology and new performance is the best feeling.

I am about to turn 42 (yeah BWAHAHA!! old fart - you may laugh!) and i have only relatively lately got my 1776 and duals. Man i wonder how old i will b before i have a 84 stroker!

It IS worth it. Compare to a new car for 20k!
Can you afford it?? - that is the sad question

Peter Leonard 路

i've been running a base 1916cc for years.... now i'm upgrading to the steroids spec, if anyone wants a joyride it'll be in sometime in the next couple of weeks 馃榾 wish i'd gone the steroids option first go, but then i only had a go of a steroids motor after the base had been built for a couple of years. I got out of the car (ironically it used to be a pobjoy ex-race beetle) grinning like an idiot, it's that much fun.
But, I wouldn't have had the chance to use the new hardcore Al case if i'd gone steroids back then. shame that anyone can have this motor now, but at least there'll be more shocked looks on peoples faces with all the steroids *plus* motors now freely available to everyone.
IF you do come for a joyride, i am not responsible for making you want one 馃槈
offer only valid for sydneysiders, and only if you wear extra undies. 馃榾

jakriz 路

Pete does this mean that the general public that aren't into vw's will be buying V8's since all their V6's will be getting blown away by beetles ??
Jak

helbus 路

I have respect for anyone that can make a seemingly harmless motor turn into a weapon.
We all know V8's have typically been built into all manner of race vehicles.
When a Beetle with a type 1 motor in it blows away a V8 it is sweeeeeet victory.

I feel the same when my supercharged EH Holden 6 cyl leaves Commodore V8's for dead.

When they ask what's in it I just say "Oh just an old red six" 馃榾

Peter Leonard 路

nup, jak, they'll be buying vw's 馃榾
with this in mind, mebbe you could sell yours or swap it for a V6. 馃榾

jakriz 路

I think that I will have to swap my motor for a Pobjoy 1916 if I want 100hp @ the wheels instead of my pidley 93.6.
馃槈

Peter Leonard 路

heehehehee
where did that article come from? you must quote your sources 馃榾

jakriz 路

Australian VW Power, issue No.18 December / January 1991 Pete.
With only a 284Duration cam with 360thou lift & Kadrons it's 100hp @ the wheels, holy crap, I most certainly must be doing something wrong.
With 298 duration & 555thou lift & 45mm Dells I just can't get these No.s Maybe I'm trying too hard??

Peter Leonard 路

thats a hardcore cam... sure you want that? ask stan you might just get ten horseys out of a simple config. change 馃榾
those heads we were talking about will probably do that, but they're an exy change... 94 horse is awesome for a diy motor. i just don't have the money or experience to risk fiddling with combos and blowing bits up. hence the steroids option. power, and no wuckas.

jakriz 路

I used Stans 32/68 cam for 2 years, I then changed to the K-8 ,still with 1.25 rockers, went from 430 lift to 500thou lift & the 1/8th mile went from 10.4 to 9.8 with only the cam change.
Nuff said really?

Peter Leonard 路

ahh. but he uses stock rockers. heck i dunno, give the bugger a call. 馃榾

jakriz 路

Stan reccomends using 1.25 rockers with that cam, but not the 1.4's. I've used Stans products for many years Pete, still use his anti-surge sump, theres nothing on the market that can beat it!

yeah and the fact you can't just 'slap 'em in to a stock case without doing some homework

jakriz 路

Sorry Craig, the 90.4 & the 93.6 were both with the K-8 & 1.4 rockers.

I would have liked more time to chat on the weekend Craig, but the racing got in the way.

I used Stans cams for years & would reccomend them but just for seat of the pants the K-8 grind feels alittle tourqier, seat of the pants anyway.

Although I wouldn't mind trying your cam馃榾regards
Jak

jakriz 路

You're confused????
Sure u don't have me mixed up with someone else?
Or am I the only dill that keeps putting my car on the dyno?

I don't think that I'll be racing anymore this year, the summer mountain bike season is about to start & I really should do some training.
regards
Jak

jakriz 路

& besides, I've had the K-8 for almost 3 years now.
Just checked my records of engine specs. I can only pressume that I misquoted myself.

馃槈

Well 121.5hp at the wheels is what you will get with the new Steroid spec POBJOY. One of Stan's customers had his dynoed and tuned at CBB on the weekend, 121.5hp !!! ......... not bad for a street car............ and being the exact same motor anyone can purchase with a 25000km/12 month warranty馃榾馃榾

That is a very impressive dyno run! Now aren't you wishing you came to CBB for your dyno Craig? :P

Good to see that putting ones mind to tuning is just as important as getting the right combo.

Congrats to both Stan for building it and Mike for interpreting the tune and the dyno results.

Hope to see that bug eat some rice now.

I agree :thumb up to both

I will be using the services at CBB in the future Matt, just couldn't on the Dyno Day.

As for the $ comparison, your dreaming Jak if you think you can duplicate your motor using all brand new components with a new aluminium case, new carbs etc . for $16/hp ..........Compare apples to apples mate.

I will look forward to seeing how long and how many engine combo's it will take for you to see 120HP@the wheels :P
So what size will it be then ???? 2.3lt

Congrats again to Mike for the work done on one of Stan's customers Steroids motor.

hook line & sinker craIg..........

jakriz 路

As I've said many times before craIg, if I didn't enjoy spending so much time in the garage or have a genuine interest in building my own motors & I had 10g's just laying around then I would definantly give Stan a call.
As for the warranty? My fathers machine work is second to none, can't beat 40+ years experience.............& it's free:thumb

Craig Torrens 路

geez where do the years go !

dangerous 路

Any updates on specs and performance Craig?
Are the heads shelf 044s or ported by stan?
Is Gregs engine one of these with dual plugs?(44 idfs?)

westi 路

question for jak,
how many different types of engine combos have you put together and what would you say is the best that you have found.i have seen that you have posted heaps of dyno sheets so i asume you have tried a few.

colin 路

Gday everyone i dont get an oppurtunity to join the post very often but after reading this one i thought i might give an unbiased opinion.
After many engine rebuilds with Larry (Keith Haeusler) some very succesful some well lets just sat not so good,we have squeezed 125.9 dynoed rwhp from my 1916 combo.
Stan Pobjoy now is offering around 120 rwhp with a warranty. How does he do this? Well i guess he has being developing his combo for many years and is now confident in its reliability and performance.
If i wanted to get someone to build me a 1916 and i was in a position to pay someone Stans offer would be very attractive. His motors after racing against them produce plenty of hp and reliability.

Just and unbiased opinion

Cheers Col

Re heads: Off the shelf 044.

Greg has Eliminator heads with twin plugs...and I think 48 idf's.

And Colin what you and Keith have done with your 1916 is impressive.
