the factory utes had a nice wooden tray i think, like the type 3 panel.....
its a cool car col, i read up on it ages ago, i would do it to a notch and leave the boot as the rear of the square looks a bit whack
SKEWtYpe3 路
i thnk this is the same guy as the black/yellow cut off type 3
this was a fasty i think, and he cut the whole door section out and welded it together...............

thats what i am saying Kai, they look cool but when u have seen the real deal they look whack, VW did a smash up job of the factory ute
the tray setup looks very similar to the DOVW one, i aint too clued up on the OG ones but they have old school style.

i just think that grey (dovw) one looks spot on! that picture is stuck in my brain now! :bounce
the best thing about something like that compared to any other ute is that you still have a bunch of extra storage at the front where everyone else has an engine 馃榾
i want one!!!!!!
kai
SKEWtYpe3 路
thats a type 3 (probably squareback)
u want to do one or buy one?
Kai.A. 路
i don't fancy my chances of buyin' one, it'll be a one-off that someone built, but i would love to own something that looked like that, so in the right circumstances i reckon i'd have a stab at buildin' one馃槑
just need the money, tools, parts and a decent donor type 3:thumb

SKEWtYpe3 路
same one yeah
it was for sale at valla and is subi powered i think?
lotsa planning required to keep 'em cool, air flow etc... this one had such problems but were fixed from memory. ( had a quick chat with the owner)

i found this one while i was surfin the net....it has to be, by far the best i have ever seen!!!!!:thumb:thumb
that is pretty darn sweet!!!
interesting tailgate arrangement behind the cab..... different :thumb
i think a type 3 based ute conversion tends to look better than a beetle based one......the lines fit better....

I recognised the first pic Col put up, because I did that in PhotoPaint about 2 years ago when people were asking about utes last time. Good to see my old pics still doing the rounds...LOL
As for the others, they're all pretty cool, especially the black Beetle ute. I had a real good look at it at the "Dubs by the Pub" do a couple years ago and was quite impressed.
Oh, I should mention that mine is technically a ute. Registration says it a "Volkswagen Utility" and it's on commercial rego too. So legally, it's a good ol' work ute.

golf ute 2.
By the way, the black beetle ute proved to be very expensive to make as the DPT required it to undergo a torsion and beaming test, which it failed the first time around. Talk to the DPT before you make a ute.
koolkarmakombi 路
What is a beam and torsion test Wes?
Ive had a look at that black one its pretty sweet but cannot carry much. Was for sale at the time.
that trailer is awesome!!!! i'd have one of those decked out with a battery system, lights, inverter and a bed so i can have some t.v videos...while listening to music...whilst travelling round australia...
that'd be soooo mad!!! even better if u took it to a swap meet...imagine what u could buy and still have room for!!!

koolkarmakombi wrote:What is a beam and torsion test Wes?
basically if you change a chassis or the body in such a way that it effects the stiffness of the vehicle, they may ask for it to be tested for torsional / beam stiffness.
They put the car on a big machine that grabs the wheels at various corners and twists and bends the car. The measure how much it flexes and calculates it's stiffness. They compare it to a standard (maybe even a convertable) vw and make sure it is at least that stiff.
The first time that one was tested it wasn't stiff enough. Unfortunately it cracked the paint and distorted some of the body panels. He then added various stiffening and tried again. So it pays to paint the car after the test. It's an expensive test too.

I agree jonno. That is one sweet ride:thumb
Give me a Kombi ute any day though. They are the true VW ute:P
