quick shift set up.

i've been trying to set up the quick shift on my 67 and am not having much luck. ie it is bolted on but i can't get it to actually find more than 2 gears and even then it is hard to tell when this happens. i have tried moving the mount plate about but no luck. the rear coupling is good but the front shift rod mount has masses of vertical movement. also a basic Q, which way up does the bottom plate under the shifter go?
thanks.

Thanks Dave!

i found that setting up the quick shift on my '68 was a right royal b**ch! just like yours, a few times we could only find 2 gears, other times you really had to be agressive to get into a gear... all i can remember was that my bf took it off and did it up reeeally tight one afternoon when it was annoying him and its worked beautifully ever since... so i guess the only advice ive got to give is to keep trying and do it up reeeeeally tight? sorry, not much help but much sympathy for how you feel!! 🙂🙂

any movement of that plate and it wont work

Too late now but when i put them on i scribe the outline on the hump before i take the old original set up off.
When i put the kit on i just line it up correctly and it has always worked.

I would try taking the kit off and see if you can get it to work without shift kit.

The front bushing will vibrate but shouldnt effect gear selection.
Are you sure the rear is good??
Is it tight on the shaft???

Loosen the shifter off and try selecting gears then If you get all 4 then put it into 2nd and nip up the bolts then see if you can get the other gears. If you can give the plate a final tighten.

Let the shifter centralise in 2nd gear.

make sure you have the shift plate the right way up ,the long straight bit faces up on the drivers side,if that makes any sence...

The doco that comes with the Empi quick shifter says if you have problems - loosen the the bolts and adjust the position of the housing forward and to the rear - tighten then try. there is a little side ways movement there too if needed.

I didnt have selection problems with mine but I did have a significant rattle in 3rd and 4th till I played with the position.

Took me a few goes to get it right too. Helps to use a big screwdriver to pry the reverse lock out plate over towards the passenger side hard then tighten with enthusiasm, but not too much (snap)

A few things that can throw the whole procedure off track are:

Shift rod bushing (had to throw the obvious in first.)

Shift coupler. If you order a replacement, either rubber (stock) or urethane, you'll probably just want to fit the inserts and keep the original cage, the new ones are rubbish.

Transmission mounts: You'd be surprised how many cars have trouble getting the shifter adjusted correctly with the tranny out of position due to 30+ year old mounts - not!

Hopefully you checked and changed all these before you fitted the quick-shift kit. If not, you might have to pull it off until you solve your original problem.

Yes GOOD POINTS

Shift rod bushing, Shift coupler and Trnsmission mounts couldnt agree more.

Make sure all of these are working good first otherwise your wasting your time and effort

thanks for all the responses. being a 6V car i think the front mount was just steel on steel (yes it is badly worn... i was hoping to get away with it... i guess not). the shift coupling is quite good... certainly better than on one of my previous cars. gearbox mounts i hadn't checked as i was planning to fab up some solid mounts (the car is being set up as a motorkhana car and will not see any street use... ).
i guess fitting the quick shift will have to wait till they are done.

thanks again.
