slowly getting down to business on our two beetles body and interiors nearing completion and now looking at engine options keen to do it all myself as i want strong motors that i know how they work . looking at fuel injection as twin carbies seem expensive and complicated. want to know if there are aftermarket fuel inj or maybe if vw type 3 or kombie fuel injection can be fitted probably looking at cap some where between 1680 and 1916cc. going to do total rebuild myself as much as possible . got two beetles to do first one warm for my gf second one hot for moir. really dont want to go and buy complete packages as i want to know how these things work and have more time than money. any ideas?? the cars are are 1976 roadster con vertible (warm) and a 1971 s (hot:alien

Do a search on 'aftermarket EFI'. There is a biig discussion on this at the moment!

If money is your problem then stick to carbs. By the time you buy manifolds and throttle bodies, the ECU, tune it up... It will cost you more than a set of carbs.

u reacon carbies are a hassel and expensive u obviously havent read anything about the fuel injection side of things!!!
need atleast $2K for a good microtech injection system then ya need manifolds run return lines for overflow set up a extra oulet in ur fuel tank no to mention all the wiring etc!
not tryin to scare u away but ur better of buying some kadron carbs for ~$450 and they can handle pretty well upto around 1916cc alright
cheers

fuel injection may be expensive 1st up but consider not having to tune it again!!!
i got so tired of tuning the twin carbs

Menangler ·

Whats to tune on carbs?
once they are jetted and the linkage is set right you shouldn't need to touch them, I haven't touched my twin 40 Dells on my ute for over 3 years.

I've looked seriously at doing the conversion and have priced some of the componets needed:
Microtech with hand controller $1150
Camira throttle body,injectors,
pumps etc $200+(from the wreakers)
Manifolds $?? (free for me- bro's
an aluminium fabricator)
then theres the hours of design and fitting involved- microtech hand controller allows u to tune it yourself. If keeping the original motor isn't an issue I would do as Wes and others have and go for a motor made for injection with all the hard work done for u. Personally I'm looking at using a kombi 2lt FI and converting it to an upright motor (altho size is an issue in a beetle using a long block).

Sounds similar to the prices that I had found, except I like the look of the ACDelco computer (from a GM) with the live-update mod ($1100) ... laptop tunable, able to save and load all settings (ie: have a fiddle with the settings and then recover the working ones when you stuff it up! :P ) Also has a 'self learn' function to help set up fuel maps - great for dummies like me! Ok, so you have to factor in the cost of a laptop if you don't have one but that is not an issue for some of us (and second hand ones are not that expensive)

Have a look at the thread mentioned above every now and again. I will be posting pics and details as my system comes along....waiting for the T1 twin port casting to be modified to suit injectors...😀
