i dunno if i will get the go-ahead from my design-tech teacher yet (getting a new teacher this year), i have been developing plans over several years for a 'big boys pedal car'. the basic concept is for a large fibreglass bodyto be fitted over a lightweight chassis incorporating a driveline similar to that of a recumberent bicycle. so what you have is essentially a 4 wheeled bicycle with a car styled body ontop. i posted the concept on a bicycle forum quite a while ago, and recieved quite a bit of interest in the concept. if i am allowed, i will have the plans finalised by mid year, and the first prototype (my yr12 final project)completed by the end of term 3. i was just curious as to whether there would be any interest in such a vehicle, as i would probably have a buck on which multiple bodies could be made if anyone was interested, and i could of course supply design sketches to finish off the rest. i am not yet sure what body i would use (beetle, bus or T3) or even whether i will be allowed, just thought i would post the concept here and get some feedback on it.

cheers
Ryan

Sounds cool :thumb

go for it. :bounce
i look forward to seeing it. keep us updated along the way with your progress.

Im not interested in a body although I think a bus ,especialy an early split window bus would be a good style to consider as it would appear more complete when you only see a head popping out the top, It could be chopped to make it individual (Considering selling on a larger scale) or shade could be incorporated with a roofrack, Also if its design for yourself is for swapmeets I would expect to get more storage out of a Kombi compared to a beetle.
Sounds grat mate ,Hope to see it at a swap in the future.

Anthiron ·

that sounds like a great idea...........BUG all the way for the body.......but im biased😀

kombi_kid ·

hey
u should make them motorised using a 4hp briggs and straton motor there is a mob in UK that make them!! they would be better then using peddal cars!!! a sub frame wouldnt be hard to make up and just use a say 15:1 ratio for the ration between pullies or chain drive!
i know these sell for alot over them something around 1000 pounds!!
but also ur idea has to be ur own for Dand T (im doing it aswell just startin yr 11)
cheers

YIPEE! i got the go-ahead on the project today, the only major change is that i now intend to use a country buggy or kubelwagen style body as it will make it much easier to produce. i am however in need of some help from a foprum member (if possible). i need somebody to act as a 'client' for my designing, which basically means that i will do a profile on you, and continually correspond with you by email to get your opinions and views on different aspects of the design and development of the project. if anyone is willing to help me out in this way i would greatly appreciate it.

Adam_C ·

if ya get stuck giv me a buzz on email and ill help ya out, im doin yr12 aswell so yeh.

p.s. when u finished with the mould can u make me a spare one i want one to motorise!!

baybuscamperkid ·

At the moment thinking about a kubelwagen or countrybuggy style body kk, so as to make it unnecessary to make a mould (mould would take more time then i will have), probably make a thin ply body, add ribbing, then thin f/glass over the top for strength and smoothness. will happily send u plans of it all tho when i get to that stage if u want.

Kubel Rat ·

Will it be a full sized body kit?
Or just something small enough to peddle around in?

If it's full sized I'd be interested in a set of plans (Kubelwagen)

Hell if you want to go into business building full size Kubelwagen Body kits, I could probably find you atleast 10 buyers!

VWFREAK ·

Yeah baby. I'd love to see the end product.

ok, well i did get around to finishing the frame for school. would be a lot easier to ride (amd lighter) then the ones you have shown. just needs some modifications to the steering system and an adjustment to the driveline. hopefully will get a chance to do a bodychell or 2 sometime...

piccies?

jo_tas ·

This sounds very cool 🙂 pics!!

here ya go

Just need a lightweight shell to pop over the top. Looks like you've done a good job so far.

In so far as sponsors, try one of the shop dudes as they might also be able to assist with people for fabrication. ie Classic VW, Vintage VW or Richard H especially.

Squiz.....

ColumBUS ·

would be easier to do a bus shell i reckon, the shape would be able to slot over and there is less curves. u could even get one moulded cheap

baybuscamperkid ·

actually been considering a countrybuggy shell to begin with, super easy, fibreglass layed over a mould. just have to wait until my car is on the road first before i can spend any more time on it.

its got shocks! mad... rat rat rat..
